Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Usually, uninstalling a game removes its software—not its saved progress. However, the answer depends on the platform, the game, cloud synchronization, and the option you choose. The biggest risk is on PC, where some games store saves inside the installation folder. Never confuse uninstalling with deleting saved data or choosing Delete everywhere.
Before removing a game, make sure your latest progress has synchronized or create a manual backup.

Quick answer by platform
| Platform | Does uninstalling usually delete saves? | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Usually no when Steam Cloud is supported and synchronized | Non-cloud saves may be stored locally, including in the installation folder |
| Epic Games Store | Usually no when Cloud Saves are enabled | Epic warns that uninstalling non-cloud games can remove installation-folder saves |
| PS4 and PS5 | Usually no | Explicit saved-data deletion, initialization, or a PS4/PS5 version mismatch |
| Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S | Usually no | Delete everywhere can remove both local and cloud progress |
| Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 | Usually no | Save data is separate from software but stored in internal memory and can be permanently deleted |
These are normal platform behaviors, not guarantees for every game. Always verify cloud status and the game’s own save-storage instructions before uninstalling.

Save data contains progress such as checkpoints, characters, inventory, settings, and sometimes local profiles. Consoles generally manage it separately from installed game data. PC games are less consistent: a save may be in a Windows user folder, a launcher folder, or the game’s installation directory.
Cloud saves are remotely stored copies synchronized by a platform or publisher service. They are useful only when the game supports the service, the correct account is being used, and synchronization has completed successfully.
Cross-save and cross-progression are different from ordinary platform cloud saves. They use a game publisher’s account system to carry progress between platforms where supported. A Steam Cloud save, for example, does not automatically make progress available on PlayStation or Xbox.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Finally, deleting a game does not normally delete your digital purchase, subscription entitlement, achievements, or trophies. Reinstalling access may still depend on your account, active subscription, region, license, and whether the game remains available. Game-specific online inventory or progression can also depend on a publisher account.
Do this before uninstalling
- Close the game normally. Do not remove it while it is running or still writing a save.
- Reconnect to the internet if the platform uses cloud saves.
- Wait for synchronization to finish.
- Check the last-sync status or cloud indicator.
- Confirm that the game supports cloud saves. Support is usually game-by-game, not universal.
- Back up PC saves manually, especially for games without cloud support.
- Do not choose Delete saved data, Delete everywhere, or an equivalent destructive command.
- Record the account used to play the game.
- If you use mods, back up mod profiles, configuration files, custom maps, and other user-created files separately.
PC: the answer depends on the game
Steam
Steam Cloud can store saves, settings, profile statistics, and other user-specific data, but each game must implement the feature. Steam does not automatically protect every PC save. See Steam’s Steam Cloud support documentation.
If Steam Cloud is enabled for the game and the latest local save has finished syncing, reinstalling will often allow that save to return. But conflicts, interrupted synchronization, offline play, or an older cloud copy can result in the wrong version being restored.
For games without Steam Cloud, saves may be found in Documents, DocumentsMy Games, %AppData%, %LocalAppData%, %ProgramData%, the game’s installation folder, or Steam’s userdata directory. Valve identifies C:Users[Windows user name]DocumentsMy Games as a common location for third-party saves that are not stored in Steam Cloud, while noting that the developer determines the actual location. Consult Valve’s save-location guidance and the game developer’s support page.

Epic Games Store
Epic Games Store Cloud Saves protect progress for supported games. Epic’s support guidance specifically warns that if a game does not support Cloud Saves, uninstalling may remove files in the installation directory, including save files. Epic recommends backing up those files before uninstalling; see Epic’s official explanation.
This is why “uninstalling never deletes saves” is too broad. If the game stores progress beside its executable, the uninstaller may remove it along with the rest of the installation.
Other PC launchers
The same principles apply to the Xbox app for PC and PC Game Pass, the EA app, Ubisoft Connect, GOG Galaxy, Battle.net, standalone DRM-free games, emulators, and modded installations. Launcher behavior is not universal. Check the individual game’s cloud-save support, save location, and account requirements.
How to make a manual PC backup
- Search the game’s official support site for save location, save files, or backup saves.
- Check
DocumentsMy Games,Documents,%AppData%,%LocalAppData%,%ProgramData%, the installation folder, and launcher-specific folders. - Copy the entire relevant folder to another drive, an external drive, or a trusted cloud-storage folder.
- Keep the original folder structure and record the game version.
- Do not overwrite the backup with an empty or newly created save after reinstalling.
On macOS, saves may be under ~/Library/Application Support/, ~/Library/Containers/, or a game-specific folder. Linux games may use ~/.local/share/, ~/.config/, or Proton/Wine compatibility prefixes. Steam Deck users should check both the game’s Linux or Proton location and Steam Cloud status. Cloud synchronization may not include mods, screenshots, local settings, or third-party launcher profiles.
PS4 and PS5
PlayStation separates installed game data from saved data. Deleting a game normally removes its installed files while leaving local saves in place. Deleting saved data, initializing the console, or performing a factory reset is different.
PlayStation Plus online storage provides another copy when the save has uploaded successfully. Sony’s current management begins at Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, followed by the relevant PS5 or PS4 saved-data options. Use the upload, download, or synchronization option appropriate to the game version. Menu labels can change with system software.
On PS4, you can also highlight the game in the Library, press Options, and select Upload/Download Saved Data. Sony supports copying PS4 saved data to a USB drive. PS5 saved data cannot be copied to USB in the same way. See Sony’s saved-data and cloud-storage guidance and its PS4 USB-backup information.

A console initialization or factory reset is far more destructive than uninstalling one game. Sony states that resetting a PS5 or initializing a PS4 deletes user and game data and cannot be undone. See Sony’s reset guidance.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
Normal game uninstalling is not the same as deleting saved data. Supported Xbox games synchronize saves with the cloud, so reinstalling while signed into the same Xbox account will generally allow the synchronized copy to return.
The critical distinction appears when managing saved data:
- Delete from console removes the local copy while retaining the cloud copy for resynchronization, where supported.
- Delete everywhere removes both the local and cloud copies and can permanently destroy the progress.
Never select Delete everywhere during troubleshooting unless permanent deletion is intentional. The distinction is also described in Xbox saved-data troubleshooting guidance.
Connect the console to the internet and allow synchronization to finish before uninstalling. If you played offline, your newest progress may exist only locally and may not yet be in the cloud. Exact storage-menu labels can vary across Xbox generations and system updates.
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo stores game save data separately from the game software, in the console’s internal memory. Deleting software is therefore normally different from deleting saves. Save data cannot simply be moved to a microSD card, so copying the game’s SD-card files is not a save backup.

- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Nintendo’s save-deletion path is separate: HOME Menu > System Settings > Data Management > Delete Save Data. Choose the game, select a user or all save data for that software, and confirm Delete Save Data. Nintendo warns that deleted console save data cannot be recovered through the ordinary process. See Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 save-data instructions.
Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud is a separate server backup for supported games. It may be outdated if uploading has not completed, and not every game supports it. Deleting a cloud backup does not delete the existing console save, but Nintendo says that once the server backup is deleted, it cannot be downloaded back. Do not delete the backup while attempting recovery; see Nintendo’s cloud-backup guidance.

What reinstalling can—and cannot—restore
Reinstalling may restore progress when the save stayed on the device, a cloud copy synchronized successfully, the same account is being used, the installed edition is compatible, a publisher account retained the progress, or a manual backup is restored.
It will not necessarily restore progress when the save was in an installation folder that was removed, cloud saving was unsupported or disabled, the latest save never synchronized, an older or empty save overwrote the cloud copy, the cloud copy was deleted, the wrong account or edition is being used, or the original save was already corrupted. Publisher-server progress can also disappear if an account was unlinked or the service was shut down.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cloud saves are not automatically foolproof
Cloud saves may be disabled, unsupported, incomplete, attached to another account, or affected by a conflict. Offline play is especially important: the most recent save may exist only on the device.
If a conflict asks you to choose between local and cloud data, do not select an option automatically. Compare timestamps and choose the copy containing the latest progress. Where possible, preserve both copies first by making a manual backup. A newly installed game can also create an empty save that risks overwriting a useful cloud copy, so avoid repeatedly launching and saving while investigating.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMods, settings, profiles, and other files
Save protection does not necessarily include mod files, mod-manager profiles, custom launch options, shader caches, configuration files, screenshots, replays, or user-created maps. Uninstalling may leave some of these behind or remove them, depending on the launcher and game. Back them up separately if they matter.

If your saves are missing after reinstalling
- Stop launching and saving in the newly installed game if overwriting is possible.
- Confirm that the correct platform account and game profile are signed in.
- Check cloud-save status, conflict messages, and timestamps.
- Verify that you installed the compatible edition: for example, PS4 versus PS5, or a remaster versus the original.
- Look for a manual backup or operating-system backup.
- Check the game developer’s official save-location and recovery instructions.
- Contact the platform or publisher before deleting more files.
Platform-specific checks
- Steam: Check Steam Cloud status, inspect any conflict prompt, and examine the local save folder and
userdatadirectory. Restore a backup only with Steam and the game closed. - Epic: Confirm Cloud Saves are enabled and check whether the game stored saves in its installation directory. Restore a manual backup before launching repeatedly.
- PlayStation: Check console saved data, PlayStation Plus online storage, and— for PS4 saves—USB backups. Compare timestamps before downloading cloud data.
- Xbox: Confirm the correct profile, reconnect to the network, and allow synchronization. Do not choose Delete everywhere during recovery.
- Switch: Check internal console memory and the game’s Save Data Cloud backup. Do not delete the cloud backup while trying to recover the local save.
Common questions answered
Does deleting a game from an SSD delete saves?
Usually not if the game stores saves elsewhere, but it can if the save is inside the installation directory. Check the game’s save location before uninstalling.
Does uninstalling a Game Pass or subscription game delete progress?
Uninstalling normally does not itself erase account records or cloud saves. Reinstalling access depends on the active subscription, license, region, game availability, account, and successful synchronization.
Do trophies and achievements disappear?
Platform trophies and achievements are generally account records and are not removed by uninstalling. Local statistics, offline unlocks, or game-specific progression may behave differently.
Can I recover a deliberately deleted save?
Sometimes, from a cloud copy, USB backup, operating-system backup, or publisher account. Console deletion can be irreversible; Nintendo specifically warns that ordinary deletion cannot recover deleted Switch save data. Avoid creating new saves until you have checked every available backup.
What happens if I change consoles or accounts?
Cloud saves usually require the same platform account. Cross-save requires explicit support from the game and a correctly linked publisher account. A different edition, region, or console generation may also use an incompatible save format.
Does cloud save work without an internet connection?
No synchronization can occur while fully offline. The device may retain a local save, but the newest progress will not be protected in the cloud until the platform reconnects and completes its upload.
