Yes—V survives in the Tower ending. CD PROJEKT RED’s intended outcome is that V receives a cure and lives, but the developers deliberately make that survival costly rather than presenting it as a simple happy ending.

Which ending is this answer about?
“Does V survive after Phantom Liberty?” is easy to misread as a question about the expansion as a whole. The answer concerns one specific route: the ending generally known as The Tower. Its epilogue is titled “Things Done Changed.”

Phantom Liberty gives V another major set of decisions inside the larger Cyberpunk 2077 story. Reaching the expansion does not impose one universal fate on every player. The Tower outcome is one possible ending route, not an automatic consequence of merely installing the expansion or completing every mission in it.

If your ending sequence is identified as “Things Done Changed,” you are looking at the route discussed here. Other endings remain separate narrative outcomes and should not be treated as evidence that every version of V has the same fate.
What “survives” means in The Tower ending
CD PROJEKT RED narrative director Igor Sarzyński described the design intention directly: “We always knew we wanted to add an ending in which V gets the cure and survives.” He immediately added the qualification that “the cost of it had to be huge.” Those two statements belong together. The Tower ending establishes survival, but it also asks what V has to give up to obtain it.
That distinction matters because “survives” does not mean “returns to normal” or “gets everything back.” The available developer comments support V being alive after receiving a cure. They do not support describing the result as a clean restoration of V’s former life, a guaranteed reunion with every ally, or an uncomplicated victory.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The developers intentionally frame the outcome as morally and emotionally uncomfortable. Sarzyński said the endings were meant to leave players “with an uneasy feeling,” force them to think, and avoid providing straight answers. Monika Janowska of CD PROJEKT RED similarly described the expansion as asking “what is the price that people are willing to survive.” The wording points to a survival story shaped by consequences, not a conventional rescue ending.
Is The Tower ending a happy ending?
It is more accurate to call The Tower a costly survival ending than a happy one. V’s life is preserved, which separates this route from outcomes in which V’s story ends through death or another irreversible resolution. However, the developers explicitly wanted the price of the cure to be enormous.
“Happy” also implies that the ending resolves the player’s major emotional questions. The creators say the opposite: they wanted the conclusions to remain uneasy and open to interpretation. The route therefore leaves room for players to decide whether survival is worth the losses attached to it, rather than handing down a single judgment that the outcome is good or bad.
This framing is deliberate, not a sign that the ending failed to decide V’s fate. The basic fact is settled—V survives in this route—but the meaning of that survival is intentionally unsettled. A player can regard the cure as a victory, a devastating compromise, or both at once without contradicting the developers’ stated aim.
What happens to the game after “Things Done Changed”?
CD PROJEKT RED treats “Things Done Changed” as an actual ending epilogue, not as a temporary detour before the ordinary endgame resumes. Its official support explanation says that the game and V’s story simply end there.
That design affects how you should approach your save. After this epilogue, you cannot return to the point of no return within the same completed ending sequence. The restriction is intentional rather than a missing quality-of-life feature. CD PROJEKT RED explains that sending players back after the epilogue would create an uncanny narrative experience: the story would have ended, yet the same save would place V back before that ending as if it had not happened.
The support page also notes that no rewards are gained during this epilogue. In the studio’s words, “As there are no rewards gained during this epilogue, we allow the game and V’s story to simply end.” In practical terms, this route is presented as a closing state for that playthrough, not a new postgame branch with additional missions and progression.

Does completing Phantom Liberty always make V survive?
No. The survival answer applies to The Tower route, not to every possible conclusion associated with the expansion. CD PROJEKT RED’s launch announcement describes Phantom Liberty as an expansion in which players again take the role of V and face difficult choices. That description is consistent with multiple possible outcomes.
Your ending depends on the route you pursue and the decisions you make. The existence of a cure-and-survival ending does not rewrite the other endings of Cyberpunk 2077, nor does it mean that simply finishing the expansion sends every player into “Things Done Changed.” To discuss V’s fate accurately, identify the ending route first and then apply the answer for that route.
This is why broad statements such as “V survives Phantom Liberty” can be misleading. They omit the condition that makes the statement true: V survives in the Tower ending. The narrower wording reflects how the game presents its conclusions.
Why the ending feels deliberately ambiguous
The ambiguity is about value and consequence, not about whether V is alive. Sarzyński’s comments separate the two questions. The developers knew they wanted a cure-and-survival ending, yet they also wanted its cost to be huge and its emotional effect unsettling.
Janowska’s description of the expansion’s central question—what price people are willing to pay to survive—offers a useful lens for the epilogue. The route does not ask only whether V can continue breathing. It asks what remains of a person’s plans, identity, relationships, and future after survival has been purchased at such a high price. The available statements do not prescribe one answer.

That approach fits Cyberpunk 2077’s broader habit of ending major choices on a question rather than a comforting explanation. The Tower route gives a concrete result while withholding a universally reassuring interpretation. You can therefore describe it precisely without claiming that it is either a triumph or a tragedy in absolute terms.
What the available evidence does—and does not—confirm
The developer statements establish several points firmly:
- V gets a cure and survives in The Tower ending.
- The survival comes with a very large cost.
- “Things Done Changed” is the epilogue for that route.
- CD PROJEKT RED treats the epilogue as the end of V’s story in that save.
- The endings are designed to leave players uneasy and thinking rather than provide straight answers.
They do not establish every detail that players sometimes attach to online explanations of the ending. The statements cited here do not provide a definitive medical timeline, a precise duration for any period of unconsciousness, a universal account of V’s cyberware capabilities afterward, or a complete description of what happens to every friend and faction. Those details should not be presented as settled facts on the strength of the survival confirmation alone.
Keeping those boundaries clear prevents two common errors: turning a confirmed outcome into an invented medical report, and treating an interpretive reading as if CD PROJEKT RED had declared it canonical.
How to tell which conclusion you reached
The simplest way to identify the route is to check the title of the ending epilogue shown by the game. The Tower route uses the name “Things Done Changed.” CD PROJEKT RED’s support material identifies that title with the Tower and Phantom Liberty ending.
Best Value
- Cyberpunk 2077 is an open world, an action adventure story set in night city
- Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night city
- Take the riskiest job of your life and go after a prototype implant that is the key to immortality
- Finish the relevant ending sequence in your own playthrough.
- Read the epilogue title displayed by the game.
- If it says “Things Done Changed,” you reached the Tower route addressed in this article.
- Do not use this route’s survival result to describe a different ending sequence.
Because the epilogue is treated as final, make a separate manual save before committing to an ending if you want to explore other conclusions. That is a playthrough-management precaution, not a claim that the game offers a post-epilogue rewind.
Where Phantom Liberty fits in the game’s release context
CD PROJEKT RED announced Phantom Liberty on September 25, 2023, as an expansion to Cyberpunk 2077. The announcement listed digital availability on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S and described players as taking the role of V again.
Those platform details identify the expansion’s launch context; they do not establish current prices, current edition bundles, physical-copy availability, or any particular retailer listing. None of those commercial details changes the narrative answer about The Tower.

How to describe the ending accurately
A spoiler-conscious explanation can be both short and exact: V survives in The Tower ending, receives the cure, and pays a huge price; “Things Done Changed” then serves as the closing epilogue rather than a route back to the pre-ending game.
Avoid replacing that precision with either extreme. “V dies in every ending” is wrong because it ignores the cure-and-survival route. “V gets a happy ending” is also wrong because it erases the cost and the creators’ stated intention to leave players uneasy. The most faithful description holds both facts together: survival is real, and the ending is not presented as uncomplicated happiness.
