Yes—Valheim enemies become tougher when more players are near them. A Valheim mechanics reference reports that each additional nearby player raises a creature’s effective health by 30% and its damage by 4%, with scaling capped at five players. That does not necessarily make a group’s overall fight harder: more players also bring more attacks and can share tasks.
How enemy scaling works
The Valheim Wiki’s Creature Level reference reports that each additional player near a creature adds 30% effective health and 4% damage, up to a five-player scaling cap. The five-player figure is the reported limit for this scaling mechanic, not a server limit.
Here, “effective health” means damage reduction: an enemy may take less damage rather than display a larger health total. The same reference says the scaling also applies to tamed creatures. These are secondary-reference mechanics, not figures stated in Iron Gate Studio’s FAQ.
Does every player on the server count?
No. Scaling is described as local to players near the creature, rather than a simple count of everyone logged into the server. The exact proximity radius is unsettled: the Creature Level reference gives 100 meters, while a separate Damage mechanics reference gives 200 meters for enemy damage scaling. Because those sources conflict, neither radius should be treated as definitive.
Scaling cap versus server cap
Iron Gate Studio’s Valheim FAQ describes Valheim as a co-op game and says servers are capped at 10 players. That is the server limit; the Creature Level reference’s five-player cap concerns enemy scaling. The two limits answer different questions.
Does co-op feel harder than playing solo?
Not necessarily. Nearby players make enemies tougher under the reported formula, but the group also has more attackers. Players can coordinate and divide roles, which may offset stronger enemies. So enemy stats can rise even when a coordinated group finds an encounter easier overall.

How to adjust combat difficulty
World Modifiers offer presets from Very Easy through Very Hard. The Valheim World Modifiers reference says the presets adjust player damage, enemy damage, enemy speed and size, and the rate at which enemies level up. Its Normal preset lists all four at 100%; Hard and Very Hard reduce player damage while increasing enemy damage, speed and size, and level-up rate. Those harder presets also raise the probability of high-level enemies. Check the options in your installed version, since these values and menu details come from a secondary mechanics reference.
