Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNo. Valheim has in-game text chat, but it does not include built-in VOIP (voice over internet protocol). To speak during a session, your group must use separate voice software, such as Discord or TeamSpeak.
What Valheim’s official FAQ confirms
Iron Gate Studios addresses the question directly in its official Valheim FAQ: “Valheim supports in-game chat, but you’ll have to use dedicated software such as Discord or TeamSpeak for voice communication.” That makes the boundary clear: text messaging is part of the game, while spoken conversation happens in an application running alongside it.

This is true whether you are playing with friends or joining a larger co-op session. There is no Valheim setting that turns on a microphone, assigns a push-to-talk key, or routes player voices through the game itself. The FAQ names Discord and TeamSpeak as examples of separate software, not as features included with Valheim.
What you can use inside the game
In-game text chat
Valheim includes text chat for sending written messages while you play. It is useful for short instructions, coordinates, warnings, or communicating with someone whose microphone is unavailable. Text chat does not provide audio, so it cannot replace a voice application when your group needs continuous conversation.

No built-in voice channel
Because voice is not handled by Valheim, you will not find an in-game voice-volume slider, microphone test, mute list, or voice-channel selector. Any controls you use for speaking, hearing other players, muting someone, or changing input devices belong to the external application and your operating system.
How to talk with friends while playing
The practical setup is straightforward. Everyone needs to join the same external voice service before or during the game session, then keep that service running while Valheim is open.
- Agree on one voice application. Use a service that every member of the group can access on their device. Iron Gate’s examples are Discord and TeamSpeak; the FAQ does not rank them or promise compatibility for every possible platform.
- Install or open the application separately from Valheim. Sign in or connect to the voice server using that service’s normal process. Valheim does not create this connection for you.
- Create or join the same voice room. A group call or voice channel lets players hear one another while the game continues to handle movement, combat, building, and text chat.
- Select the correct microphone and speakers. In the voice application, choose the input device you intend to use and confirm that the output is going to your headphones, headset, or speakers rather than an unused device.
- Check mute and transmission behavior. Make sure you are not muted in the application and that your chosen transmission mode—such as open microphone or push-to-talk—matches how your group wants to communicate.
- Launch or rejoin Valheim. Once the voice connection is working, enter the same world or server as your group. Keep the voice application running in the background.
These steps describe the relationship between the two programs, not a Valheim menu path. Voice-room names, account requirements, and control labels can differ between services and can change when those services update.
Discord, TeamSpeak, or another group app?
The official FAQ gives Discord and TeamSpeak as examples but does not compare their features, pricing, privacy, or device support. The best choice is therefore determined by your group’s existing setup rather than by a Valheim-specific advantage.
| Choice | What is established | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Discord | Named by Iron Gate as dedicated software that can provide voice communication. | Choose it when your group already uses it and everyone can join the same call or channel. |
| TeamSpeak | Also named by Iron Gate as dedicated software for voice communication. | Choose it when your group already has access to a TeamSpeak voice server or prefers that service. |
| Another voice application | The FAQ does not list or evaluate other services. | Use one only if every player can access it and your group has tested its microphone and output settings. |
Neither named service should be treated as a built-in Valheim component. If one player cannot install or use the application selected by the group, switch to a service available to everyone or rely on text chat for that session.
Do you need a headset or microphone?
A headset with a microphone is an optional way to use external voice chat; it is not a Valheim requirement. You can use another available microphone and audio output if your setup provides clear two-way communication. The game itself does not require voice hardware to launch, join a world, or use text chat.
Why a headset can help
A headset places the microphone close to your mouth and sends other players’ voices directly to your ears. That can reduce the chance that your microphone picks up speaker audio and creates an echo. It remains an accessory choice, not an official hardware recommendation from Iron Gate.
Basic audio checks
- Confirm that the operating system detects the microphone before joining the voice room.
- Speak while watching the application’s input indicator, if it provides one.
- Use headphones or lower speaker volume if other players hear their own voices returned through your microphone.
- Check that the application is not muted globally, in the room, or through a hardware mute switch.
- If push-to-talk is enabled, verify the assigned key does not conflict with a control you need in Valheim.
How Valheim’s player limit relates to voice chat
Iron Gate describes Valheim as a co-op game and states that servers are capped at 10 players. That number limits the players who can be on a server; it is not a voice-chat capacity figure and does not indicate how many microphones an external application can support.

For a group near the 10-player limit, organize the external voice room before everyone joins the world. A clear channel name or a simple speaking convention can make coordination easier, but those arrangements are managed outside Valheim. The game does not automatically create a matching voice channel when a server starts.

No server-hosting choice changes where voice communication occurs. A dedicated server handles the game session and world connection; it does not add a microphone system or voice channel. Players on a dedicated server still need to connect through separate voice software if they want to speak.
This distinction matters when troubleshooting. If everyone can enter the world but nobody can hear anyone, the server connection may be working normally. Investigate the external application, its selected devices, mute state, and network access rather than looking for a hidden VOIP option in the server configuration.
Troubleshooting when friends cannot hear you
Only one player has no audio
- Have that player verify the selected input device in the voice application.
- Check for an application-level mute, a room mute, or a physical microphone mute switch.
- Confirm that the microphone is not reserved by another program in a way that prevents the voice application from receiving sound.
- Use the application’s own test or input meter, when available, before changing Valheim settings.
Nobody in the group can hear anybody
- Confirm that all players joined the same voice room rather than separate rooms with similar names.
- Check that the voice service is connected and that participants appear online in the room.
- Verify output devices and volume levels for each player.
- Temporarily leave and rejoin the voice room, then test audio before reopening the game if necessary.
Voices work, but gameplay audio disappears
This is usually an operating-system or voice-application output issue, not a Valheim VOIP setting. Recheck which device each program is using and whether an automatic audio-ducking feature lowers game volume during calls. Make one change at a time so you can identify which setting fixed the problem.
Push-to-talk interferes with controls
Choose a transmission key that is not needed for movement, combat, inventory management, or building. If no convenient key is available, use open microphone with an appropriate input threshold, or coordinate through text chat until the control conflict is resolved.

What to expect during a co-op session
Think of the setup as two parallel communication systems. Valheim carries the game state and written messages. The external application carries spoken audio. You can continue playing if the voice service disconnects, but you will lose spoken communication until it reconnects; the game world and its text chat are separate from that voice connection.
For short expeditions, text chat may be enough for simple instructions. Voice becomes more useful when a group is exploring different locations, coordinating a difficult fight, warning others about hazards, or trying to respond without stopping to type. The choice depends on your group, because Valheim does not enforce one communication method.
Common misconceptions
- “The server cap means 10 people can use Valheim voice chat.” The cap is a multiplayer-server limit, not a measurement of voice capacity.
- “A dedicated server should have a voice toggle.” Server hosting and voice communication are separate systems.
- “A headset is mandatory.” A headset microphone is optional; any workable microphone and audio output can serve the external call.
- “Discord or TeamSpeak is part of Valheim.” Iron Gate names them as separate software examples, not integrated game features.
- “Text chat and voice chat are interchangeable.” Text chat is available in the game, while spoken conversation requires the outside application.
Bottom line for new players
Set up your group’s voice room before launching a co-op session, then use Valheim’s text chat for in-world written messages. If your group does not want another application, the game remains playable with text alone; it simply will not provide spoken communication through its own interface.
