Does Valve Really Make Nearly $50 Million per Employee? What the $17 Billion Steam Estimate Means

A third-party estimate and an older workforce figure produce the headline ratio—but they do not establish Valve’s audited revenue or profit per employee.

Not as a verified company figure. The nearly $50 million number comes from dividing a third-party estimate that Steam sales could approach $17 billion in 2025 by an older, approximate Valve workforce estimate of about 350 people. That calculation is roughly $48.6 million per person, but it is not audited Valve revenue per employee, profit per employee, or employee pay.

Where the nearly $50 million figure comes from

In November 2025, Tom’s Hardware reported an Alinea Analytics estimate that Steam had generated $16.2 billion in sales during 2025 and described a projection that annual Steam sales could reach about $17 billion. The headline ratio is simple arithmetic: $17 billion divided by an estimated 350 employees is about $48.6 million per employee.

Neither input is a confirmed current Valve corporate figure. The numerator is an estimate of Steam sales, not a public financial result from Valve. The denominator is an approximate historical workforce figure, not a verified current headcount. Valve is privately held and, as Tom’s Hardware noted, is not required to publish the operational information needed to confirm the calculation.

What the numerator measures—and what it does not

Steam is a marketplace for games and other products sold by Valve and third-party developers. Gross sales through the platform are not the same thing as the amount Valve keeps, nor do they equal Valve’s consolidated revenue or profit. The reporting distinguishes estimated Steam sales from what Valve itself receives; it does not publish Alinea Analytics’ detailed calculation method.

Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner

That distinction matters because the headline turns platform activity into a company-wide claim. The estimate does not establish Valve’s 2025 corporate revenue, Steam’s audited gross sales, or Valve’s profit. It also does not provide enough information to calculate a reliable per-employee financial measure.

Why the employee count is uncertain

The roughly 350-person figure cited in the coverage is an approximation based on older staffing information, including a historical average and an employee estimate attributed to 2018. It should not be read as Valve’s confirmed headcount in 2025. The sources do not establish the company’s exact current workforce or whether the estimate uses the same employee definition as figures reported by public companies.

Why comparisons with Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are not established

A valid company comparison requires matching measures and periods: for example, audited full-year corporate revenue divided by a clearly defined workforce count. The Valve headline instead combines estimated gross Steam platform sales for 2025 with an older approximate employee count. Those are not aligned inputs.

Company or measure Reported figure Why it is not a like-for-like comparison
Valve / Steam About $17 billion in projected 2025 Steam sales; about 350 employees as an older, approximate estimate, as reported by Tom’s Hardware. The sales figure is a third-party platform estimate, not audited Valve corporate revenue; the workforce figure is not a confirmed 2025 count.
Alphabet $402.836 billion in consolidated revenue for 2025 and 190,820 employees at year end, according to its 2025 SEC-filed annual report. These are disclosed corporate figures, but consolidated revenue is not the same measure as gross Steam sales, and the periods and workforce bases differ.
Amazon Approximately 1,576,000 employees at December 31, 2025, according to its 2025 SEC-filed annual report. The cited report excerpt provides the employee count but no matching revenue figure for calculating a ratio here.
Microsoft Not stated in the sources cited for this comparison. The available figures do not support a matched calculation against Valve’s estimated platform sales and historical workforce estimate.

Alphabet’s and Amazon’s filings offer disclosed company data, but they cannot validate the Valve estimate. A ranking of “revenue per employee” based on these inputs would imply a degree of comparability and certainty that the figures do not support.

What can reasonably be concluded

The defensible takeaway is narrower than the headline: Alinea Analytics estimated that Steam’s 2025 sales were on course to approach $17 billion. Dividing that estimate by a historical workforce estimate near 350 produces a striking ratio of roughly $48.6 million per person. The arithmetic is correct, but the result is not a verified measure of Valve’s revenue, profitability, productivity, or compensation per employee.

Valve’s Handbook for New Employees, as reproduced by Tom’s Hardware, contains a historical statement that its profitability per employee is higher than Google’s, Amazon’s, or Microsoft’s and that the company aims to put as much money as possible into employees’ pockets. That wording is not a confirmation of the 2025 Steam-sales estimate or of a current employee count.
