Usually, no—not through a currently supported native Steam client. Google’s Steam for Chromebook program was a limited beta, and a report published on August 8, 2025 quoted Google’s warning that the program would end on January 1, 2026. ChromeOS may still show legacy help pages, so an individual Chromebook can look eligible even though native beta access should not be assumed.
Is Steam for Chromebook still available?
Treat native Steam for Chromebook as discontinued. The shutdown warning quoted by Tom’s Hardware said: “The Steam for Chromebook Beta program will conclude on January 1st, 2026. After this date, games installed as part of the Beta will no longer be available to play on your device.” That date has passed.
Google’s Help Center still hosts instructions written for the beta. Those pages describe how the program worked, but they are not a promise that a new installation will work in October 2026. If Steam was already installed, its behavior can depend on the ChromeOS version and the device; do not assume continued access to installed games.
What the former beta required
Google’s published requirements applied only to the former beta and only to selected Chromebook models. Meeting the numbers alone was not enough.

| Item | Former Google beta requirement | Historical recommendation for the best experience |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | At least an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 | Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5, or better |
| Memory | 8GB RAM or more | 16GB RAM |
| Storage | 128GB or more | Not separately stated |
| Device eligibility | A Chromebook on Google’s finite supported-model list | A supported model with the stronger CPU and memory configuration |
Google’s November 2, 2022 ChromeOS.dev announcement described the 16GB and i5/Ryzen 5 guidance as the target for the best beta experience. It also noted that local gaming was heavily dependent on hardware, added Intel 12th-generation and AMD Ryzen 5000 C-series support, and warned about limitations, known bugs, performance issues and title availability.
Examples of models on the former list
Google’s list included these examples, with availability subject to change:

- Acer Chromebook 516 GE
- Asus CX-series models
- Framework Laptop Chromebook Edition
- HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook
- Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming Chromebook 16
- Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook 14
These model names identify hardware that was considered for the beta; they do not establish current native Steam support.
How to check your Chromebook’s hardware and legacy eligibility
- Open the hardware diagnostics view: press Ctrl + Search + Esc to see the CPU and RAM details.
- Check capacity: open Settings > Device > Storage management and verify available storage.
- Run the historical eligibility test: open the Launcher and search for “Steam installer”. During the beta, Google said that a missing installer meant the Chromebook did not meet the beta requirements.
Because the beta’s reported end date has passed, a missing installer now can mean the service has been withdrawn rather than that your hardware failed the old test. Conversely, seeing an old help page or launcher entry is not proof that games can still be installed and played.

Why Steam may not appear in the Launcher
- The beta ended: the January 1, 2026 shutdown is the most important explanation for a new or missing installer.
- The Chromebook was never on the supported list: Google did not enable Steam on every Chromebook.
- The hardware was below the former threshold: the beta required at least an Intel i3 or Ryzen 3, 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, plus a supported model.
- You are looking at the wrong app: Google warned beta users not to install Steam or Steam Link from the Play Store because those apps could cause performance issues and were not the native Chromebook beta client.
What gaming was like during the beta
Google recommended lowering resolution, closing background windows and starting with Medium or Low graphics settings. Performance varied by Chromebook, processor generation, memory and the game itself; the beta’s compatibility guidance was not a guarantee for every supported model.
Examples on Google’s tested compatible-games list included:
Rank #4
- acer Chromebook Plus 514 Laptop Touchscreen: acer Chromebook Touchscreen Laptop 14inch FHD IPS Display with narrow-bezel suitable for enjoying vibrant, crisp images.
- 2 in 1 Chromebook Laptop Touchscreen: acer Chromebook tablet 2in1 with 360° flip convertible design allows you to fold back and use it as a tablet rotate the screen to comfortably read, write, sketch, or watch anything.

- A Short Hike
- Among Us
- Celeste
- Dead Cells
- Hollow Knight
- Portal 2
- Vampire Survivors
- Half-Life 2
- The Sims 3
Those examples show the kind of lighter or older PC games the beta targeted. They should not be read as a current compatibility promise or as evidence that every Steam title would run.

Native local play versus cloud streaming
| Factor | Former native Chromebook beta | Browser-based cloud gaming |
|---|---|---|
| Current status | Reportedly ended January 1, 2026 | Provider-dependent and subject to change |
| Where the game runs | On the Chromebook | On a remote gaming server; video is streamed to the Chromebook |
| Game library | Limited to titles that worked on the device and beta build | Can offer a much larger catalog, depending on the provider and game ownership rules |
| Hardware emphasis | CPU, RAM, storage and the Chromebook’s graphics capability mattered directly | A capable browser device is less important, but the network connection matters greatly |
| Network requirement | Needed for downloads and online features, but local rendering did not depend on constant streaming | Low latency and a stable connection are essential; interruptions affect play immediately |
| Cost and availability | No current native-beta promise | Check the chosen provider’s subscription or game costs, supported regions and ChromeOS compatibility |
For current PC games, investigate cloud gaming through a provider that explicitly supports your Chromebook, region and library. Confirm latency expectations, pricing, required account or game ownership, and whether the service works in the browser rather than assuming that any Steam-branded app will do.

If you are buying a Chromebook for games
Use a named gaming model such as Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming Chromebook 16 as a shopping query, then verify the exact processor, RAM, storage and graphics hardware. Its appearance on Google’s historical beta list does not guarantee native Steam access now. Buy it for the ChromeOS, cloud-gaming and general-use features you can confirm today—not on the assumption that the discontinued beta will return.
The practical answer
Your Chromebook supported Steam natively only if it was one of Google’s selected beta models and met the former hardware requirements. In October 2026, the safer answer is that native Steam support is no longer available as a dependable platform. Check your model and specifications if you are troubleshooting an old installation, but use cloud gaming or another gaming device for a current PC-game library.
