YouTube’s published guidance does not set a universal maximum duration that automatically ends every livestream at 12 hours. The 12-hour mark matters for two other reasons: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured in YouTube’s archive, and viewers’ ability to rewind may be limited or unavailable. Those are archive and playback limits—not a stated cap on how long the live broadcast itself can continue.
What the 12-hour threshold actually means
YouTube Help distinguishes the live broadcast from what happens to it afterward and what viewers can do while it is live. Its guidance addresses archive capture and DVR playback; it does not establish a universal automatic end time for livestreams. YouTube’s archive guidance says a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance says rewind capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.
- Broadcast duration: The cited guidance does not say that every livestream ends automatically at 12 hours.
- Archive: A stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but YouTube does not promise that every eligible stream will be captured. A stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all.
- Viewer rewind: DVR may not let viewers rewind freely through a very long livestream, even while the broadcast is continuing.
Will YouTube save a livestream longer than 12 hours?
Do not rely on YouTube to preserve the complete replay of a stream that runs beyond 12 hours. YouTube says it may not capture such a stream at all. For streams under 12 hours, YouTube says automatic archiving is available, but that is archive eligibility—not a guarantee of capture.
For an important event, make a separate local recording and check that the recording file is present, intact, and continuing to grow while the stream is underway. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup and checking local archive file integrity in its livestreaming tips. A local copy protects your own recording; it does not make YouTube archive a stream that exceeds its stated threshold.

Can viewers rewind a livestream that runs for hours?
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live broadcast, but YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek back to a point before the stream began. YouTube notes lower limits for Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions, so the available rewind experience can vary by viewing device and app.
Does the 12-hour figure apply to every YouTube live feature?
No. YouTube’s event-promotion guidance describes a 10-minute-to-12-hour duration condition for that promotion feature. That condition belongs to event promotion; it is not evidence of a universal livestream duration cap. See YouTube’s event-promotion guidance for that separate context.

What to do before a long YouTube livestream
- Plan an independent recording. If you need a complete copy, arrange a local recording rather than depending solely on YouTube’s archive.
- Check the recording during the event. Confirm that the file exists and is growing; check it again after the broadcast and verify that it plays.
- Set viewer expectations. For a stream that may exceed 12 hours, do not promise that viewers will be able to rewind through the full broadcast or that YouTube will provide a complete replay.
- Choose a supported streaming method. YouTube describes mobile, webcam, encoder, and console as ways to stream. For webcam setup, its instructions cover selecting the correct webcam and microphone; the cited guidance does not identify a particular camera, encoder, microphone, or drive as a requirement for avoiding the archive caveat.
