How to Schedule YouTube Playlist Rotations with Streamlabs Desktop

YouTube can schedule encoder-based live events and loop playlists in its player, but playlist ordering, event scheduling, and timed source rotation are separate tasks.

You can schedule a YouTube live event in YouTube Studio and manage playlist order on YouTube, but those are separate tasks. Streamlabs Desktop’s setup guide explains scenes and sources; it does not establish a built-in way to schedule playlist rotations or timed source changes. The right workflow depends on whether you mean repeating one playlist, switching among playlists, or scheduling live events.

First, identify what “playlist rotation” means

  • Repeat one playlist: YouTube’s player can loop a playlist during playback. This repeats it; it does not schedule a live event or rotate between playlists. YouTube’s loop instructions describe the player control.
  • Switch between playlists or sources at set times: This would require timed changes to the content sent by your encoder. The Streamlabs Desktop quick-start guide covers scenes and sources, but does not document scheduled playlist rotation. Its availability in the current app is not established by that guide. Streamlabs’ quick-start guide
  • Schedule separate live events: YouTube Studio lets you schedule an encoder-based stream. That creates an upcoming event; it does not schedule content rotations inside Streamlabs.

Prepare and order your YouTube playlist

  1. On a computer, open YouTube and create a playlist or edit an existing one.
  2. Choose its visibility, add the videos you want, then arrange them in the intended order. YouTube’s playlist controls are separate from your live-stream settings. See Create and manage playlists on a computer.
  3. If you intend to repeat the playlist in YouTube’s player, use the player’s playlist loop control during playback. This is a viewer-side playback action, not a timed encoder instruction.

Schedule an encoder-based live event in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room.
  2. Choose Manage, then Schedule stream. Create a new stream or reuse settings, and enter the event details and start time. YouTube’s current help page describes this encoder-based event workflow at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Use the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube to connect your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
  4. In Streamlabs Desktop, set up the scene and add the sources viewers should see or hear. Streamlabs describes scenes as layouts that contain sources. The guide does not show a timer for rotating YouTube playlists or changing sources on a schedule: Streamlabs Desktop quick-start guide.
  5. Start sending the encoder feed and check the preview and stream status in Live Control Room before the scheduled event begins. YouTube provides a shareable upcoming event page and reminder options; see Manage live stream settings.

What this workflow does—and does not—automate

Goal Where to do it What it accomplishes
Arrange playlist videos YouTube playlist controls Sets the playlist’s order; it does not schedule a live broadcast.
Repeat one playlist during playback YouTube player Loops that playlist during playback; it is not a scheduled rotation between playlists.
Schedule an upcoming live event YouTube Studio Live Control Room Creates a scheduled encoder-based event with a page viewers can visit.
Change content sources at timed intervals Not documented in the Streamlabs guide cited above Do not assume this is a built-in Streamlabs feature without checking current app documentation.

Make a recurring schedule viewers can follow

Choose a cadence you can sustain and tell viewers when it changes. YouTube recommends a consistent, sustainable live schedule and communicating changes in its live upload schedule tips. Reusing stream settings can reduce repeated setup, but scheduling events does not itself rotate playlist content.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos around the clock, StreamNeo is an alternative to running an encoder at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
