Why YouTube Live Redirect Ends Before the Next Stream Starts

Live Redirect can move viewers before an upcoming destination goes live. Here’s how the handoff works and what to check when it appears to stop.

YouTube Live Redirect hands viewers off when the source stream or Premiere ends; it does not promise to keep them on the finished broadcast until the destination goes live. If the destination is still upcoming, the handoff can happen first. YouTube advises viewers to wait a few seconds for the screen to reload, but what appears during that interval can vary by device.

What happens when Live Redirect runs

There are two separate events: the source stream ends, then YouTube directs viewers to the destination selected in the source stream’s Redirect setting. The destination can be an active or upcoming live stream, or an upcoming Premiere. YouTube does not describe Redirect as a holding feature that waits for an upcoming live broadcast to begin.

YouTube’s May 3, 2022 announcement says that once a stream or Premiere ends—or the creator selects “End Stream” in Live Control Room—autoplay moves viewers to the selected stream or Premiere. YouTube also notes that the screen may need a short time to reload. Its help guidance says to allow a few seconds, with approximately two seconds given as a guide; that is not a guaranteed delay for every device.

If the destination has not started, the official guidance does not specify exactly what every viewer will see in the meantime. Avoid promising a particular waiting screen or a precise start-to-handoff interval.

Check why viewers are not reaching the destination

  1. Verify the selected destination. In YouTube Studio, go to Content, select Live, edit the source video, open Customization, and check Redirect. Confirm that the intended destination is selected. YouTube’s Live Redirect instructions describe this setup.
  2. Check the destination’s status and type. Confirm whether it is an active stream, an upcoming stream, or an upcoming Premiere. If it is still upcoming, viewers may be handed off before the live broadcast begins; YouTube does not promise that Redirect will hold them on the source.
  3. Confirm the receiving channel permits the redirect. Redirects to another channel depend on that channel’s settings. YouTube describes options for allowing redirects from subscribed channels, all channels, or specifically approved channels. The subscribed-channel default depends on whether subscriptions are public. Check the receiving channel’s permission if you are sending viewers elsewhere.
  4. Give the screen time to reload. Tell viewers to wait a few seconds before concluding that the handoff failed. YouTube’s stream-settings guidance mentions approximately two seconds, but actual reload time can differ.
  5. Check autoplay. Viewers who have autoplay turned off must click play themselves after the handoff. A prompt to click play does not necessarily mean the redirect setting is broken.
  6. Confirm the sending channel is eligible. YouTube lists more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes among the eligibility requirements for sending a redirect. Check the current help page for the full instructions and applicable account requirements.

What to tell viewers

Set expectations before ending the source: tell viewers that YouTube will move them to the selected destination, allow a few seconds for the screen to reload, and explain that they may need to press play if autoplay is off. If the destination is not live yet, give its expected start time separately; Redirect itself is not documented as a way to keep viewers waiting on the source until that time.

If the handoff still seems broken

YouTube’s published guidance documents setup, permissions, autoplay, and the expected reload, but it does not establish one universal cause for every delay or failed handoff. For a device-specific problem, record the viewer’s device, YouTube app or browser, autoplay setting, destination status, and whether a redirect confirmation appeared. Those details help distinguish a destination or permission issue from a viewer-side playback issue.

Or let it run in the cloud

Live Redirect is for handing viewers from one finished stream or Premiere to a selected destination; it does not keep an ongoing source stream running. If you want a pre-recorded video to keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
