There are 70 Banandium Gems (bananas) across Tempest Layer’s three collectible sublevels, SL900, SL901 and SL902; SL903 has none, according to Nintendo Life’s guide. The main-story route covers Gems 1–15 and 24–70. Gems 16–23 are post-credit rewards from the Elephant Elder’s Bananza Rehearsal.
Use the numbered checkpoints below to find each reward. For exact positions, consult the Nintendo Life Tempest Layer maps; several locations are hidden in terrain or require a particular Bananza ability.
SL900: Find Gems 1–15 and 24
Opening area and upper mountain
- Gem 1: Enter Tempest Layer.
- Gem 2: Above the mountain left of the start, lower the first three Goo Gum platforms. Carry a chunk to lower the final platform.
- Gem 3: Search the small cave on the outside face of the left wall.
- Gem 4: Leave the Elephant Elder’s room to the right and use the Burrowers’ Liftoff Ore.
Liftoff Labyrinth and nearby caverns
- Gem 5: Follow the main route through the Liftoff Labyrinth ruins beside the Elephant Elder.
- Gem 6: During the lava-hurdle section, use the final Liftoff Ore platform to reach the high secret path on the right; the gem is buried there.
- Gem 7: Complete the Liftoff Labyrinth ruins.
- Gem 8: Look behind the Elephant Elder’s head inside the mountain.
- Gems 9–11: Feed the Tempest Growtone 400, 2,000 and 4,000 Gold, respectively.
Remaining SL900 tasks
- Gem 12: Clear three enemy waves in the glass arena above the Elder’s room.
- Gem 13: Enter the caverns through the sand wall near the SL901 Lava Lake Walkway entrance. Turn left at the first pillar and use Hand Slap.
- Gem 14: Enter the nearby high sand wall and follow the Fractones.
- Gem 15: Use Elephant Bananza to clear lava behind the SL901 Lava Lake entrance.
- Gem 24: Cash in chips at a layer Chip Exchange.
SL901: Find Gems 25–33
Lava Getaway and oil tower
- Gem 25: Defeat Sinister Blusterwing and descend to SL901.
- Gem 26: Dig down from the umbrella right of Lava Getaway to access the Batteroid x3 battle ruins; complete the challenge.
- Gem 27: Search below the Void-locked tower near Ancient Record Crossroads.
- Gem 28: Use Burrowers’ Liftoff Ore to reach the top of the oil tower and complete the Squeeloid x4 battle challenge.
- Gem 29: Throw a chunk at the elevated zip-line near those ruins and ride across. Use Hand Slap on the platform to raise the line, then reach the banana above.
Hot-Shower route
- Gem 30: Use Elephant Bananza to clear lava in Hot-Shower Cave, beside a zip wire.
- Gem 31: Follow the main route to the Hot-Showers’ key tornado. Clear a straight path toward the Elephant Bananza: Heating Up ruins across the second set of platforms.
- Gem 32: At the Barrel Cannon, clear left instead of taking the cannon. The gem is over two rotating platforms.
- Gem 33: Complete the Elephant Bananza: Heating Up ruins.
SL902: Find Gems 34–70
Jumbo Spa and approach
- Gem 34: Defeat Sinister Blusterwing a second time and descend to SL902.
- Gem 35: At the Trunk-Dunk start, clear lava from the tap behind you with Elephant Bananza, then swim over.
- Gem 36: Open the Zip-Line Valley ruins with the Constructone left of the start. Climb above the entrance and take the secret zip-line.
- Gem 37: Continue past the first zip-line sequence.
- Gem 38: Complete the Zip-Line Valley ruins.
- Gem 39: Speak to Smashintone in Jumbo Spa after smashing through 70,000 m of lava.
- Gem 40: Check the sauna roof.
- Gem 41: Speak to Seekertone in the sauna and find four Fractones around Jumbo Spa.
- Gem 42: Leave the hot springs through the left door and speak with Cranky.
Spa exit and storm path
- Gem 43: Complete the Elephant Bananza Shifty Smash in the sauna.
- Gem 44: Climb the oily tower on the stone elephant head by attaching earth chunks to its sides.
- Gem 45: Complete the Antickoid x8 battle course in a nook off the rock face by the zip-line.
- Gem 46: On departure from the spa, search inside the large stone elephant’s snout.
- Gem 47: Inhale the lava on the zip-wire path.
- Gem 48: Complete the storm-path Shifty Smash.
- Gem 49: In the Hot-Lava Hotfoot ruins above Cliff-Edge Getaway, check the rest stop after the Barrel Cannon.
- Gem 50: In the same ruins, use Elephant Bananza’s Chunk Jump to reach the raised mid-course platform.
- Gem 51: Complete the Hot-Lava Hotfoot ruins.
- Gem 52: Take the lava route left of the storm path.
Big-Roof Shelter to Stormy Station
- Gem 53: After completing the storm path, search the wall beside Big-Roof Shelter.
- Gem 54: Look beneath the mud bath.
- Gem 55: Follow the map marker from the Fractone under the umbrella north of Big-Roof.
- Gem 56: Complete the Crockoid x3 battle course.
- Gems 57–58: Recover the Fragmentone pieces across the lava: one first, then the other two.
- Gem 59: Hop over the two Goo Gum platforms right of the Big-Roof checkpoint and pass through the breakable doorway.
- Gem 60: Complete the Rolluskoid x5 battle ruins below the island.
- Gem 61: Use nearby Goo Gum platforms and Liftoff Ore beneath the mud enemies to reach the tower banana.
- Gem 62: Speak to the next Constructone to open the Crockoid x2 course, then complete it.
- Gem 63: Build a zip-line with the Constructone on a stone elephant cover. Jump off halfway to reach the buried gem.
- Gem 64: In the Sharpshooter Scramble ruins below Clifftop Shelter, check the rest stop.
- Gem 65: In those ruins, take the extra right-hand moving-platform route.
- Gem 66: Complete the Sharpshooter Scramble ruins.
- Gem 67: Search the water below Clifftop Shelter.
- Gem 68: Complete the Shifty Smash on the last island.
- Gem 69: After clearing the station island’s Void lock, use Ostrich Bananza to reach a nearby platform and check its puddle.
- Gem 70: Use Liftoff Ore to reach the top of Stormy Station.
Post-credit rewards: Gems 16–23
Nintendo Life’s guide lists Gems 16–23 as rewards from the Elephant Elder’s Bananza Rehearsal after the credits. The rehearsal requires 500 collected Banandium Gems to start. Its eight rewards are:
- Clear Salt Forecast.
- Near the salt-room finale, use suction diagonally through the ice.
- Clear Glowing Forecast.
- Put a Glow Stone in the Barrel Cannon near that room’s reward.
- Clear Golden Forecast.
- Use a wooden Crocktoid and a seed to form a bridge.
- Guide ice to its bowl.
- Complete the Elephant Bananza Rehearsal.
How gems help, and how to locate missed ones
Banandium Gems increase Skill Points: Nintendo says five gems grant one Skill Point, which can be spent on upgrades such as Punch Power. Nintendo also notes that gems may be concealed in walls, ground or other terrain, as well as awarded for ruin challenges. See Nintendo’s world-exploration tips for the general mechanics.
