What the Switch HD edition includes
Nintendo says the Switch edition brings together selected features from the Wii and Nintendo 3DS releases. It also includes the additional levels that appeared in the 3DS version. Nintendo specified a total of 80 levels in its 2024 launch announcement; that figure describes the level count, not 80 newly created stages.
That description supports calling the game an HD version drawing on earlier editions. Nintendo’s announcement does not provide a complete technical comparison of every feature across Wii, 3DS, and Switch, so it does not establish a more precise remake-or-port classification.

Nintendo describes play for one player or local two-player co-op. Its announcement notes that additional accessories may be required for multiplayer, while its local multiplayer instructions cover choosing controllers. Whether you need another accessory depends on the controllers available and your setup; Nintendo does not state that every co-op player must buy an additional controller.
What changed after launch
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is already available on Nintendo Switch. Nintendo UK’s current game page offers a free demo through Nintendo eShop or its website.

Nintendo Support records version 1.1.0 as released on January 20, 2026. The update added Dixie Kong, Turbo Attack mode, Brazilian Portuguese support, and other fixes. On Nintendo Switch 2, it also added local GameShare support, optimized display and image quality, and shorter load times. These are update details, not part of the original June 2024 announcement.
