What does the Switch HD edition include?
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD launched for Nintendo Switch on January 16, 2025. Nintendo’s June 18, 2024 announcement described 80 levels, including additional levels from the Nintendo 3DS version, and local two-player co-op. Nintendo’s announcement provides the level count and launch date.
Nintendo’s release notice identifies eight additional levels originally found in the 3DS release. It also lists motion or button controls and two ways to play: Original mode, for a tougher challenge, and Modern mode, which provides extra hearts and items. Nintendo Saudi Arabia’s release notice describes these features.

The Switch edition is the straightforward choice if you want the HD release on a current Nintendo console, the 3DS extra levels, and a choice between motion and button controls. That does not establish that it is technically superior in every respect: Nintendo’s cited materials do not specify resolution, frame rate, or comparative performance.

Choose Donkey Kong Country Returns HD for Nintendo Switch if you want Nintendo’s newer console edition, its included 3DS levels, or Modern mode’s extra hearts and items. Choose the Wii or 3DS release if you specifically want to play those original platform versions.
