Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a demanding, finely crafted 2D platformer, and its Nintendo Switch edition is the easiest version to recommend to most players: it adds Funky Mode, which softens the challenge, and lets you play on a television or in handheld mode. The main caveat is difficulty. Its demanding stages are a draw for players who enjoy precision platforming, but may feel punishing if you want a relaxed run.
What kind of game is Tropical Freeze?
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a side-scrolling platformer built around challenging levels, precise movement, and optional collectibles. It first appeared on Wii U in 2014; the Nintendo Switch version followed on May 4, 2018, in North America and Europe. GameSpot’s Switch review roundup and Nintendo Life’s game listing identify the respective editions and release history.
In Original Mode, Donkey Kong is joined by Diddy, Dixie, and Cranky Kong. The partners have distinct abilities that affect how you handle obstacles and traversal. Nintendo also lists collectibles and two-player co-op among the game’s features. Nintendo’s product page describes the modes and characters.
How hard is Tropical Freeze?
Difficulty is the biggest factor in deciding whether the game will suit you. Its levels ask for timing and careful control, and missed jumps or hazards can make progress feel demanding. Critics have differed on whether that challenge is satisfying or excessive: GameSpot’s Peter Brown praised the Switch version’s creative design and called its difficulty tough but rarely frustrating, while other reactions in the same roundup stress how substantial the challenge remains.
#1 Best Overall
- Donkey Kong, diddy Kong, dixie Kong and cranky Kong return for the franchise's debut on the Nintendo Switch system!
- This title includes all the fun and challenge of the original game, plus a brand-new mode that lets new and novice
- Players Enjoy this critically acclaimed adventure as Groovy surfing simian funky Kong.
- Funky Kong can double jump, hover, perform Infinite rolls and even perform Infinite underwater corkscrews.
- Thanks to his sturdy surfboard, even spikes can't slow him down.
That contrast is useful rather than contradictory: a player who enjoys learning a difficult stage may find the demands rewarding, while someone looking for an easygoing platformer may find the same obstacles tiring. Funky Mode offers a more forgiving alternative on Switch, but it does not turn the game into a walk in the park.
What does Funky Mode change on Switch?
Funky Mode lets you play as Funky Kong, whose additional abilities make difficult sections more accessible. GameSpot’s roundup describes abilities including a double jump and the ability to float; Nintendo presents the mode as a more relaxed experience. It eases the demands of the platforming rather than removing them.

These are GameSpot’s separate reviews, not an aggregate rating or a direct measure of how every player will respond. In its 2018 roundup, GameSpot also gathered historical opinions from other outlets: IGN’s Seth G. Macy said Funky Mode improved accessibility without eliminating the formidable challenge, and Game Informer’s Kyle Hilliard highlighted the handheld release for players who had missed the original. Those assessments are opinions about the Switch edition, not official Nintendo claims. GameSpot’s review listing provides the edition-specific scores; its Switch roundup attributes the contemporary review comments.
Is the Switch version different from Wii U?
The Switch edition’s defining addition is Funky Mode. Its other practical advantage is portability: Nintendo Switch supports TV, tabletop, and handheld play, while the original release was on Wii U. This makes the Switch version a particularly straightforward choice if you have not played the game before or want to take it with you.

If you already own the Wii U version, the decision is more limited: consider whether Funky Mode and handheld play are valuable enough to revisit the game. The cited sources do not establish additional new levels for Switch. Nintendo lists Switch 2 compatibility as supported, with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch; check Nintendo’s current listing for up-to-date compatibility details.
