Don’t Expect the Steam Machine to Follow a $500 Console Pricing Model

Valve never confirmed a $500 Steam Machine. Its stated target was comparable to a similarly performing PC, and Tom’s Hardware reported a $1,049 starting price in June 2026.

Valve did not promise a $500 Steam Machine. In November 2025, Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais said the pricing target was a window comparable to a similarly performing PC. Tom’s Hardware later reported on June 22, 2026, that launch pricing started at $1,049—a figure tied to that report, not a $500 console-style target.

What Valve said about the price

In a November 25, 2025 report, Ars Technica quoted Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais describing the company’s target as a comparison with a do-it-yourself PC of similar performance: “If you build a PC from parts and get to basically the same level of performance, that’s the general price window that we aim to be at.” Ars Technica’s November 2025 report presented $500 as a console-price assumption in its discussion—not as a price Valve had confirmed for the Steam Machine.

That statement described a target, not a final manufacturer’s suggested retail price. It also points to a different comparison than the traditional console model, where hardware can be priced with the expectation that software sales will help support the business.

What the reported launch price means

On June 22, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported a Steam Machine starting price of $1,049. The report said Valve’s original design assumptions reflected memory and storage prices from roughly two years earlier, and that those costs contributed to the system landing in a different price segment than the company had hoped. Read Tom’s Hardware’s June 2026 report for the price and Valve’s explanation.

Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console

  • Wi-Fi 6E

The $1,049 figure is the starting price reported by that outlet on that date. It should not be confused with the earlier pricing target, and it is not a guarantee that every region, retailer, or later point in time will have the same price.

Why a console comparison can mislead

Valve engineers have argued that the Steam Machine’s value depends partly on what a buyer already owns and what they want the hardware to do. Yazan Aldehayyat, a Valve engineer quoted by Tom’s Hardware, said: “I think the value of the Steam machine is inherently tied to the value of your Steam library in a lot of ways, right?” A player with a substantial Steam library may have less reason to repurchase games than someone starting fresh on another platform; that advantage depends on the games they actually want to play.

  • 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32

Aldehayyat also described the hardware as a “self-sustained program” that is “not subsidized by software sales.” That is Valve’s explanation of its business approach, not an independent calculation proving that the Steam Machine costs less over its lifetime.

Comparing total value requires more than looking at the upfront price:

  • Games already owned: Account for titles you can play from your existing library, rather than assuming every buyer begins with the same collection.
  • Online play: Include any subscription costs relevant to the console you are comparing; the cost structure may differ from your Steam setup.
  • Performance: Compare the systems at the resolution and settings you expect to use, not by treating a headline such as “4K” as a like-for-like performance guarantee.
  • Living-room use: Consider TV and controller integration, physical size, noise, and setup effort.
  • Other PC uses: Decide whether flexibility beyond gaming matters to you, and whether you would use it.

Griffais cautioned against treating the comparison as exact: “There’s a lot of factors there where it’s not really apples to apples, right?” The value case is therefore buyer-specific, rather than proof that one platform is universally cheaper.

How it compares with a gaming PC

Valve’s stated pricing yardstick was a PC assembled for roughly comparable performance. For a fair build-versus-buy comparison, match the intended performance first, then factor in the case size, cooling and noise, assembly and setup effort, and the Steam Machine’s integrated living-room and controller-oriented features. A parts list that costs less on paper may not deliver the same size, acoustics, or ready-to-use TV experience.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

The comparison also depends on what you want from a PC. A self-built or prebuilt machine may offer flexibility in components and non-gaming uses, while the Steam Machine packages PC gaming in a living-room-oriented form. The available reporting does not establish a universal parts-cost figure or an independent benchmark that settles which option is the better value.

What performance to expect

Tom’s Hardware described 1080p and 1440p as practical targets, with 1080p as the reported global default. Its discussion of 4K concerned output and upscaling, including FSR in some games and settings; it does not establish a blanket promise of native 4K at 60 frames per second across games. When comparing price with a console or PC, use the resolution and settings you actually expect to play at.
