Only Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation require RTX 50.
The DLSS 4 rollout is therefore a partial generational divide, not a simple “old versus new” switch. Your games, native frame rate, VRAM needs, and interest in multi-frame generation should decide whether you upgrade.

Key takeaways
- DLSS 4 benefits RTX 40 through new Transformer-based models for Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA.
- The updated standard Frame Generation model is available on RTX 40 and RTX 50 when the feature is enabled.
- RTX 50 is the hardware requirement in NVIDIA’s table for Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation.
- NVIDIA says Multi Frame Generation can create up to three additional frames per rendered frame on RTX 50 GPUs.
- GPU replacement decisions should account for native performance, VRAM, latency, game compatibility, and the net cost of switching.
Should I keep my RTX 40 for DLSS 4?
Yes, unless a specific RTX 50 capability or a broader performance upgrade is the reason for changing cards. DLSS 4 does not make every RTX 40 feature obsolete because much of the update targets models that NVIDIA supports across multiple GeForce RTX generations.
NVIDIA’s own description calls DLSS “a revolutionary suite of neural rendering technologies that uses AI to boost FPS, reduce latency, and improve image quality.” The important word for buyers is “suite”: the individual technologies have different compatibility boundaries.

What is supported on RTX 20, 30, 40, and 50?
The current NVIDIA matrix shows a broad base layer and a narrower generation-specific layer:
| Capability | RTX 20 | RTX 30 | RTX 40 | RTX 50 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DLSS Super Resolution | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| DLSS Ray Reconstruction | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| DLAA | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Standard Frame Generation | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Updated Frame Generation model | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Multi Frame Generation | No | No | No | Yes |
| Dynamic Multi Frame Generation | No | No | No | Yes |
These entries come from NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 compatibility documentation. Individual game support, driver state, and NVIDIA App override eligibility can change what users see in practice.
How does the DLSS 4 model upgrade help an RTX 40 card?
The Transformer architecture replaces the earlier model for Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA. NVIDIA says the change improves image stability across frames, limits ghosting and shimmering, and provides more detail during motion.

- TRI FROZR 3-Stay cool and quiet. MSI’s TRI FROZR 3 thermal design enhances heat dissipation all around the graphics card.
- TORX FAN 5.0-Fan blades linked by ring arcs and a fan cowl work together to stabilize and maintain high-pressure airflow.
- Copper Baseplate-Heat from the GPU and memory modules is captured by a copper baseplate and then rapidly transferred to Core Pipes.
- Core Pipe-Precision-machined heat pipes ensure max contact and spread heat along the full length of the heatsink.
- Airflow Control-Sections of different heatsink fins disrupt unwanted airflow harmonics and reduce noise.
RTX 40 also receives the updated standard Frame Generation model. NVIDIA reports that this model is 40% faster and uses 30% less VRAM than the previous frame-generation method. The figures belong to NVIDIA’s 2025 product announcement and should be qualified: they are not independent, all-game performance measurements.
Actual results may be shaped by the specific RTX 40 model, game engine, output resolution, base frame rate, CPU limit, VRAM demand, and driver version. A visual upgrade can be worthwhile even when a fixed FPS percentage cannot be promised.
What does RTX 50 add?
RTX 50 adds the DLSS 4 feature that creates multiple AI-generated frames between traditionally rendered frames. NVIDIA lists Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50-series GPUs, and its developer documentation says the technology can generate up to three additional frames per rendered frame.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is also listed as RTX 50-only. Those two features are the strongest DLSS-specific reasons for moving beyond RTX 40, although generated frames should be considered alongside base frame rate and latency rather than as a replacement for native rendering power.

How do I use NVIDIA App overrides?
Compatible games and applications may expose newer DLSS models through the NVIDIA App. RTX 40 users can look for the Transformer Model Upgrade for Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA. The Frame Generation Model Upgrade applies to RTX 40 and RTX 50 systems when standard Frame Generation is switched on in the game. NVIDIA details the availability in its official DLSS 4 announcement.
- Update the NVIDIA graphics driver.
- Open the NVIDIA App and select the supported game or application.
- Apply the Transformer override when the title offers the compatible option.
- Enable Frame Generation in the game before testing the Frame Generation override.
- Compare motion clarity, artifacts, latency, VRAM behavior, and frame rate at your normal settings.
The override path improves supported integrations; it does not turn unsupported titles or older hardware into full DLSS 4 implementations.

Which upgrade decision fits your use?
| Need | Best starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Core image-quality improvement | Keep RTX 40 | Check whether the game exposes the Transformer model option. |
| Updated standard Frame Generation | Keep RTX 40 | Confirm in-game Frame Generation is enabled. |
| Multi Frame Generation or Dynamic Multi Frame Generation | Buy RTX 50 | Confirm the exact title supports the feature. |
| Better native performance | Compare newer GPU models | Evaluate raster performance, ray tracing, VRAM, and thermals. |
| Lower financial risk | Keep the current card | Compare resale value with the full replacement cost and games you play. |
For a 4070, 4080, or 4090, the recommendation is the same in principle: do not sell merely to obtain the DLSS 4 name. Sell when the current card fails a real performance, VRAM, or feature requirement. NVIDIA’s RTX 40-series reference page identifies the family, while the compatibility page should guide feature expectations.
