The vivirenremoto/doomcaptcha repository describes the idea as “Captchas don’t have to be boring,” links to a playable demo, and notes a newer interpretation made by Guillermo Rauch in 2025. The repository page lists a GPL-3.0 license. That label alone does not resolve the licensing status of every asset or deployment, so check the project files and the specific version in use for those details.
How does the Doom CAPTCHA challenge work?
A game instead of an image grid
In a My First Million interview, Rauch said he wanted a CAPTCHA styled like Google’s familiar image challenge, but with the user playing Doom instead of identifying objects in pictures. He described using a WebAssembly version that runs in a browser and modifying the game’s C codebase to constrain the level. In his account, killing three enemies completes the challenge.

Is Doom CAPTCHA an effective anti-bot system?
The available sources do not establish how well Doom CAPTCHA resists automated traffic. A 2021 Hacker News discussion about “DOOM Captcha” includes commenters questioning whether the game could be scripted and whether a client-side success signal could be trusted without server-side validation. These are discussion points, not verified vulnerabilities or the results of a formal security test.
