If DOOM Eternal closes immediately, returns to Steam’s Play button, opens to a black screen, or crashes before gameplay, there is no single fix that works for every PC. The most common causes are unsupported hardware, GPU-driver conflicts, damaged game files, overlays, antivirus interference, missing runtime components, incorrect GPU selection, and unstable graphics settings.
Follow the fixes below in order. Start with the low-risk checks—requirements, Steam file verification, drivers, overlays, and security software—before reinstalling the game or changing advanced Windows settings.

Quick fix checklist
- Restart Windows and fully reopen Steam.
- Compare your PC with Bethesda’s current DOOM Eternal system requirements.
- Verify the game files in Steam.
- Install the current GPU driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Disable Steam, Discord, NVIDIA, AMD, Xbox Game Bar, and monitoring overlays.
- Check Windows Security or your antivirus quarantine history.
- Force the game to use the discrete GPU on a laptop or multi-GPU PC.
- Repair the official Microsoft DirectX runtime components.
- Try windowed mode, lower graphics settings, and remove overclocks.
- Generate a DxDiag report and contact Bethesda Support if the crash continues.
First, identify the exact failure
“DOOM Eternal is not opening” can describe several different problems:
| Symptom | Likely starting points |
|---|---|
| Steam shows Running briefly, then returns to Play | Immediate crash, blocked executable, missing runtime, damaged files, or driver issue |
| Black screen, sometimes with audio | GPU driver, display mode, overlay, antivirus, or graphics configuration |
| Crash at the opening video or main menu | Overlay conflict, corrupted settings, driver instability, or damaged files |
| Crash only after entering gameplay | High graphics settings, overheating, overclocking, driver instability, or memory pressure |
| Laptop fails while Steam itself works | Wrong GPU selected or an outdated laptop graphics driver |
| Problem began after an update | Changed files, mods, overlays, a new driver, or a new security rule |
A stutter is not the same as a crash. Disabling the Steam Overlay can help some performance problems, but it is not a universal launch fix. Bethesda has separate guidance for crashes and stuttering, black screens, and pressing Play without a response.

1. Check the current system requirements
Before changing files, confirm that the PC meets the requirements listed on Bethesda’s current support page. Do not rely on old launch-era articles or the requirements printed on a physical box.
Integrated graphics are not supported. A laptop can also have enough total hardware but still launch the game on its integrated adapter instead of its discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU. Systems close to the minimum specification may experience launch or performance problems even when they technically qualify; Steam gives the same general warning in its game-launch troubleshooting guidance.
Bethesda’s current guidance also removed Windows 8.1 from its supported operating-system information because of AMD driver-support limitations. Do not use Windows 8 or 8.1 workarounds as though they were current mainstream solutions.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute2. Restart Windows and Steam completely
Restart the PC, then open Steam again and launch DOOM Eternal before starting recording tools, RGB utilities, monitoring software, or mod managers. A restart clears a stuck Steam process, finishes pending driver or Windows updates, and removes temporary conflicts.
If Steam remains on Preparing to Launch or quickly returns to Play, Steam’s explanation is that the game may be crashing immediately after launch. Continue with file verification and driver checks rather than repeatedly clicking the button.
3. Verify DOOM Eternal’s files in Steam
- Open Steam.
- Open Library.
- Right-click DOOM Eternal and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then restart Steam and launch the game.
Older Bethesda instructions may call the same area the Local files tab. Valve’s interface has changed labels, so look for Installed Files if Local files is not present.
Steam may replace files that are missing or different. A verification result reporting files that could not be validated does not automatically mean the entire installation is unusable; some local or changed files may simply be restored. Relaunch after the scan instead of running verification repeatedly without testing the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Update, clean-install, or roll back the GPU driver
Install graphics drivers from the manufacturer rather than from a third-party driver-updater utility:
Update first when the driver is old or the system has never had the current vendor driver installed. If DOOM Eternal started crashing immediately after a driver update, test a clean installation or roll back to the previous stable driver instead. Bethesda’s numeric driver versions shown in some support material are historical thresholds, not a recommendation to stop updating at those versions.
Restart Windows after installing the driver. Do not delete arbitrary DLL files from System32 or the game folder.
5. Make sure the correct GPU is selected
On a laptop or desktop with more than one GPU, assign DOOM Eternal to the high-performance adapter:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Software.
- Find the application-specific graphics setting.
- Add the DOOM Eternal executable if it is not listed.
- Select the High performance or discrete GPU.
- Apply the change and restart the game.
The executable location varies by installation. A typical Steam path is C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonDOOMEternal, but your Steam library may be on another drive or folder. Bethesda specifically identifies incorrect GPU selection as a possible cause of launch failures.
6. Disable overlays and background game utilities
Temporarily disable every overlay before trying more invasive fixes:
- Steam Overlay
- Discord Overlay
- NVIDIA GeForce Experience or NVIDIA App overlay
- AMD Software overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner overlays
- RGB, controller, motherboard, recording, and performance-monitoring utilities
This is a diagnostic test, not a permanent requirement. If the game launches afterward, re-enable overlays one at a time until you identify the conflict. Overlays are especially worth testing when the crash occurs during startup, a menu transition, a screenshot, or a recording shortcut.
7. Check antivirus and Windows Security
Windows Security or another antivirus product may block or quarantine the game executable, launcher, or a changed file.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the antivirus or Windows Security app.
- Review Protection history, quarantine, or blocked-app events.
- Restore a file only when its authenticity is clear and the game came from a legitimate store.
- As a temporary test, add the authentic game and Steam folders to exclusions.
- Launch the game, then remove unnecessary exclusions and restore normal protection.
An exclusion reduces protection for that location. Never permanently disable antivirus protection, approve an unknown replacement executable, or download a “fixed” game file from an unofficial website.
8. Repair the official DirectX runtime
Seeing DirectX 12 in Windows does not guarantee that every legacy DirectX support component a game may need is installed. Bethesda notes that missing DirectX files can affect some users.
Use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer to install or repair the official components. Do not obtain individual DLL files from a DLL-download site. If the Microsoft installer fails, update Windows, restart, and try again.
Visual C++ runtime errors are a separate branch. If Windows explicitly reports a missing VCRUNTIME, MSVCP, or similar component, investigate the matching Microsoft redistributable. A generic crash by itself does not prove that a particular Visual C++ package is missing.

9. Test administrator access carefully
Bethesda recommends confirming that the Windows account has administrator access. Start Steam normally first. If permissions appear to be involved, test Steam or the game executable with appropriate administrator privileges.

- QUICK PLAY TIME: Engaging 15-30 minute game sessions ideal for quick entertainment breaks, with recommended age of 14 and up
- STRATEGIC CHALLENGE: Face off against an ever-evolving machine of death and destruction, racing to find and defeat the doom core before humanity is annihilated
Do not permanently force compatibility modes designed for older Windows versions unless a specific support instruction requires it. Running every game as administrator can increase privilege exposure and often does not fix a driver, overlay, or damaged-file problem.
10. Disconnect controllers and unnecessary peripherals
Bethesda advises unplugging a controller as a launch test. Close the game, disconnect controllers, wheels, fight sticks, USB audio devices, and unnecessary peripherals, then launch with only a keyboard and mouse connected.
If DOOM Eternal starts, reconnect devices individually. This isolates a device or its companion software; it does not prove that controllers are generally incompatible with the game.
11. Reset graphics settings and try windowed mode
For a black screen or a crash at the menu, try:
- Windowed or borderless-windowed mode
- Lower graphics settings if the menu opens
- HDR and ray tracing disabled for the test
- Monitoring and recording overlays disabled
- Default display resolution and refresh rate
If the game cannot reach the menu, reset or rename its configuration data only when you can identify the exact file and location from a reliable, edition-specific procedure. A settings reset can remove custom resolution, display, and graphics preferences, so back up the file rather than blindly deleting unknown data. Do not invent filenames or edit random values in the game directory.
12. Remove overclocks, mods, and injectors
Return the GPU and CPU to stock settings temporarily. Remove undervolts, aggressive memory profiles, shader injectors, ReShade, DLL injectors, unofficial launchers, and mods from the test configuration. Close mod-management tools before launching.
After removing third-party files, verify the Steam installation again. A failure that follows a game update may be caused by an outdated mod or overlay rather than proof that the game is permanently incompatible with the new version.
Historical Bethesda/Steam technical notes identify SLI and CrossFire as unsupported configurations. Treat that as an unsupported-setup warning, not as a setting every reader needs to change.
Choose the right branch for your symptom
If the Play button returns immediately
- Verify Steam files.
- Check antivirus quarantine.
- Install or clean-install the GPU driver.
- Disable overlays and background utilities.
- Repair DirectX components.
Bethesda’s launch-specific troubleshooting page is available at this support article.
If you see a black screen
- Update or reinstall the GPU driver.
- Disable all overlays.
- Check antivirus blocking.
- Try windowed mode.
- Disconnect peripherals.
- Reset graphics settings and verify files.
If it crashes only during gameplay
- Lower demanding settings.
- Remove GPU and CPU overclocks or undervolts.
- Disable monitoring and recording tools.
- Check temperatures and general system stability.
- Update or roll back the GPU driver based on when the issue began.
- Verify files.
Steam versus other PC editions
The verification instructions above are for the Steam edition. If you use Microsoft Store, Epic, or another PC edition, use that platform’s own repair or verify function; do not assume Steam’s menu exists.
A typical Steam installation resembles C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonDOOMEternal, but the actual library path may differ. Avoid deleting or replacing files inside protected Microsoft Store folders without a documented procedure for that edition.

When to reinstall—and when not to
Reinstalling is a later step, not the default answer. File verification is faster and less disruptive. Reinstalling will not solve an unsupported integrated GPU, a conflicting overlay, antivirus blocking, an unstable overclock, or a broken driver.

Collect evidence before contacting Bethesda
If the problem remains, gather information that can identify the failing component:
- Exact symptom and whether Steam returns to Play
- Windows version and GPU model
- Whether the game ever reaches the menu
- Recent driver, Windows, game, mod, or overlay changes
- Exact error text and the time of the failure
- Windows Event Viewer or Reliability Monitor faulting-module details
- A DxDiag report
To create the report, press Win+R, enter dxdiag, press Enter, choose Save All Information, and keep the resulting text file. Bethesda directs users with continuing DOOM launch crashes to provide DxDiag information when contacting support. You can also review Bethesda’s general launch-crash guidance.
Do not assume a current patch caused every crash or that the game is broken for everyone. Timing is useful evidence, but the faulting module and controlled tests are more informative.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does DOOM Eternal close immediately after I press Play?
The game may be crashing during startup because of damaged files, a GPU-driver problem, an overlay, antivirus blocking, a missing runtime component, or the wrong GPU. Verify the files, disable overlays, check security history, and test the current GPU driver first.
Can integrated graphics run DOOM Eternal?
Bethesda’s support guidance states that integrated graphics are not supported. On a laptop with both integrated and discrete graphics, assign the game to the high-performance GPU, but hardware must still meet the official requirements.
Should I download a missing DOOM Eternal DLL?
No. Use Steam file verification or Microsoft’s official DirectX runtime installer. Random DLL-download sites can provide unsafe or mismatched files.
Will reinstalling DOOM Eternal fix the crash?
Sometimes, but reinstalling is less useful when the cause is a driver, overlay, antivirus rule, unsupported GPU, or unstable overclock. Try verification and the other low-risk tests first.
The Bottom Line
There is no guaranteed one-click fix, but the sequence that resolves the most common DOOM Eternal PC launch problems is: confirm supported hardware, verify Steam files, test the GPU driver and discrete GPU, disable overlays, check antivirus, repair DirectX, and reset demanding graphics or overclock settings. If the game still fails, send Bethesda the exact error details and a saved DxDiag report instead of using unofficial DLLs or “PC repair” tools.
