DOOM Ported to a Single LEGO Brick

A maker built a custom RP2040 computer inside a LEGO-brick-shaped resin enclosure and adapted DOOM for its tiny 72×40 monochrome OLED. The result is real, playable and impressively impractical.

Yes—but not in the way the headline first suggests. Maker James “Ancient” Brown built a custom LEGO-brick-shaped computer around a Raspberry Pi RP2040, a 0.42-inch monochrome OLED, custom circuit boards and unconventional controls, then adapted an RP2040 DOOM port to run on it. The result is a genuine miniature DOOM machine, not a standard LEGO brick with software installed inside it—and it is technically playable rather than practically comfortable.

What the LEGO DOOM brick actually is

Hackaday reported the project under the exact title “DOOM Ported To A Single LEGO Brick” on March 18, 2023. Brown, who uses the name “Ancient” online and is described in coverage as a maker and Weta Workshop graphics engineer, created a custom electronic assembly molded into a LEGO-compatible brick-like form.

That distinction matters. This is not an unmodified retail LEGO element, an official LEGO product or a normal computer hidden inside a hollow toy brick. It is a miniature computer designed around the brick’s geometry, with its electronics sealed in resin or epoxy. “Single LEGO brick” is best understood as shorthand for a single custom LEGO-brick-shaped device.

Hardware inside the brick

The reported design combines several components that would normally be spread across a development board and peripheral hardware:

  • The green baseplates in this build it yourself set measure over 6-inch long and 6-inch wide, and 4-inch long and 2-inch respectively. Kids will get to build and play with 790 pieces and is ideal for boys and girls of any age
  • Raspberry Pi RP2040: the dual-core microcontroller running the game software.
  • 0.42-inch monochrome OLED: a screen measuring roughly 72 × 40 pixels.
  • Custom PCBs: multiple panels arranged as a three-dimensional electronic frame rather than one conventional flat board.
  • Flash storage, crystal oscillator, voltage regulation and diodes: the supporting circuitry needed to make the embedded computer operate.
  • Accelerometer: used for tilt-based input in the playable version.
  • Capacitive-touch controls: the brick’s top studs act as touch-sensitive inputs.
  • USB and electrical contacts: used for power or connection depending on the project iteration.
  • Resin or epoxy enclosure: the electronics are encapsulated to create the finished brick-like object.

The tiny OLED is the most obvious limitation. At 72 × 40 pixels and in monochrome, it cannot show DOOM anything like a conventional handheld display. Walls, corridors, enemies and the status bar are recognizable, but the image is severely compressed and highly dependent on brightness, resin clarity, lighting and viewing angle.

How can an RP2040 run DOOM?

The underlying software is RP2040 Doom, a port derived from Chocolate Doom for RP2040-class hardware. Its documentation specifically identifies support for the shareware DOOM1.WAD. That does not mean the device runs every DOOM release, DOOM II, Final DOOM or the complete catalog of id Software games.

The port has to work within the RP2040’s memory, storage and processing constraints. The repository uses specialized data handling to accommodate the shareware WAD, while the LEGO project also required a different rendering path for its OLED rather than simply outputting to a normal VGA display.

Because the display is monochrome, the brick’s software uses rapid screen updates and grayscale techniques. Hackaday describes the result as using three grayscale levels, helping separate parts of the scene despite the screen’s extremely low resolution. The impressive part is not that a modern game has been squeezed into the brick; it is that a specialized classic-game port can be made to execute, render and accept input on this combination of microcontroller and miniature display.

How are the controls operated?

The control system abandons a conventional gamepad. The player tilts the brick, with the accelerometer supplying movement or aiming-related input, and touches the studs on top for additional actions such as shooting. Reports from Raspberry Pi’s MagPi coverage and Hackaday document the arrangement, although the exact mapping should be treated as specific to the maker’s build rather than a universal control scheme.

It is an inventive interface, but not an ergonomic one. There is no room for full-size buttons, a joystick or a conventional grip. Contemporary coverage characterizes the controls as imperfect and the game as only “just barely” playable. In other words, the device demonstrates that DOOM works; it does not turn a LEGO brick into a good replacement for a handheld console.

The physical engineering may be harder than the software

Making the brick-shaped hardware was a miniature manufacturing problem. The documented construction process involved designing PCB panels around the enclosure geometry, populating them, soldering the panels into a three-dimensional frame and using jigs to keep the parts aligned.

Brown then created a silicone mold and cast the assembly in resin or epoxy. The display had to remain visible through the enclosure, with MagPi reporting a resin layer of roughly 0.1 mm over the screen in the documented construction. Too much material would consume precious space or make the image harder to see; too little would compromise the finish and protection.

Resin also creates a major trade-off. It gives the device its rigid, convincing brick-like appearance and protects the electronics, but it makes repair and rework extremely difficult. A failed component, bad solder joint or trapped defect discovered after casting can effectively mean rebuilding the device. The project reportedly involved about four months of failures and iteration.

Was it always a self-contained DOOM computer?

No. The project evolved, and different reports describe different stages.

  1. June 2022: early demonstrations showed a tiny LEGO-style display receiving DOOM output from another system. At this stage, the brick functioned primarily as an external monitor.
  2. Late 2022: reporting connected the project to RP2040-based DOOM software and described the hardware and display more fully.
  3. March 2023: Hackaday covered the playable configuration with local RP2040 execution, tilt input and capacitive-touch controls.
  4. Later development: further work explored a more self-contained battery-powered arrangement and related configurations, including an additional brick-like module beneath the main unit.

This timeline explains why some descriptions mention external video, USB power or an accelerometer while others describe a more independent computer. They are not necessarily contradictory; they refer to different iterations of the prototype.

How was it powered?

Power details vary by version. The MagPi account describes external USB power in the documented build, while electrical contacts were also part of the miniature design. Brown explored fitting a rechargeable battery inside the limited space, but the battery, USB connector and other electronics competed for the same volume.

Later coverage from Hackster describes a more self-contained iteration with a tiny battery and accelerometer, though some components were placed in an additional lower brick-like module. It is therefore inaccurate to claim that every version was battery-powered and entirely contained within one standard-sized brick.

Is it really running DOOM, or only showing a video?

The answer depends on which version is being discussed. The earliest display demonstrations involved DOOM being rendered elsewhere and sent to the tiny screen. Later versions used the RP2040 Doom software locally and added controls, making them genuine miniature DOOM computers rather than passive displays.

The most accurate description is that this was an evolving prototype: it began as a tiny DOOM display and developed into a custom RP2040-based device capable of running a supported DOOM build locally.

Could you build one?

In principle, yes. As a beginner project, no. The public RP2040 Doom releases provide a legitimate software starting point, but downloading the repository will not reproduce Brown’s brick. The cited coverage does not establish a complete public schematic, full bill of materials, exact PCB Gerbers, final firmware commit, OLED pin mapping, accelerometer model, touch circuit, battery specification or mold design for the finished device.

A sensible build path would be to start with a supported RP2040 development board, confirm the firmware and legally obtained game data, then add a small monochrome OLED. Only after the larger prototype works should a builder adapt the renderer, add tilt and touch input, design a custom miniature PCB and attempt resin encapsulation.

A replica would require fine-pitch soldering, precision fixtures, custom board fabrication, display-driver work, sensor integration, mold-making and repeated failed iterations. Retail breakout boards are useful for experimentation but are generally too large for the finished enclosure.

Can you buy the finished brick?

There is no verified retail LEGO DOOM product established by the cited reporting. An earlier report said Brown had not indicated plans to sell the device, and the project’s custom fabrication requirements make it unlike an off-the-shelf kit. Do not confuse ordinary LEGO bricks, third-party “screen bricks” or official LEGO electronics products with this specific maker build.

For readers who want the software experiment rather than the extreme enclosure challenge, a Raspberry Pi Pico or another supported RP2040 development board is the practical alternative. It is easier to program, debug, power and repair, even if it lacks the visual novelty of a resin-cast game running inside a brick.

What the project proves

The project’s achievement is not simply that DOOM can run on a small microcontroller. It combines a constrained RP2040 port, a 72 × 40 monochrome display, three-dimensional custom electronics, experimental controls and a nearly unrecoverable resin-casting process into one coherent object.

So the headline is genuine with an important qualification: DOOM was ported to a custom LEGO-brick-shaped computer. It is a remarkable proof-of-concept and a fascinating hardware hack—not a comfortable gaming system, an official LEGO release or a turnkey build anyone can assemble by downloading one file.
