Abyssal Forest is Chapter 8 of DOOM: The Dark Ages. For a broad route checklist, there are five items: two Rubies, an Armor Demonic Essence, an Abyssal Forest Codex Entry, and the Witch Toy. Push Square’s five-item list includes the two resource pickups; GameSpot’s chapter guide counts two collectible-class items—the Codex Entry and Toy—so the totals use different scopes, not conflicting routes.
Before you advance: check the AutoMap
Use the AutoMap to spot unexplored areas, caches, objectives, and secrets before moving on. Special icons mark points of no return; crossing one prevents you from returning to the previous area without restarting the level. Bethesda’s exploration guide also notes that the Shield Saw’s Charge and Throw abilities can activate environmental mechanisms outside combat. Bethesda’s exploration guide explains that Life Sigils grant extra lives and that Gold, Rubies, and Wraithstones can be spent at Sentinel Shrines to upgrade weapons and abilities.
All five items, in route order
-
Ruby #1 — cave beneath the branches
After opening the Yellow Key gate and clearing the next area, keep to the left. Find the path beneath the tree branches and follow it down into a cave. Swim across the water, then use the boost pad to reach the Ruby area you passed earlier.
-
Abyssal Forest Codex Entry — enterable tree
As you leave the Yellow Key area, look for a large tree you can enter with the Shield Saw. The Codex Entry is inside. GameSpot describes this as a small area in the opening forest section reached with a shield bash.

Witch Toy — caged room in the same arena
In the Ruby #2 arena, drop to the lower path and follow Gold to a room with fire turrets. The Toy is in a cage in the middle. Look through the open window where a tree branch breaks through and throw the Shield Saw at the visible lock. Throw it again at the revealed contraption to lift the cage, then collect the Toy. GameSpot places the Toy in the barracks near the cannon route, in a room reached by a side path around the mountain, and describes a chain-and-shield-switch interaction.
Why some guides list two instead of five
Push Square’s chapter guide, published May 16, 2025, lists the two Rubies, Armor Demonic Essence, Codex Entry, and Toy. GameSpot’s chapter guide, published May 12, 2025, counts collectible classes—Codex Entries, toys, and weapon skins—and its chapter page covers the Codex Entry and Witch Toy. Its two-item total excludes resource pickups. Bethesda’s official exploration article notes that secret areas appear throughout the game, and explains how exploration tools help locate them.
