Verdict: Revelations is a substantial, focused expansion that makes DOOM: The Dark Ages feel faster without discarding its timing-based combat. Its six-level campaign, Chain Spear and expanded Ripatorium give the Slayer more ways to move, defend and experiment. PC Gamer’s Rory Norris awarded it 90/100 and estimated 10–15 hours, describing a blend of DOOM Eternal-style mobility and The Dark Ages’ parry-driven fights. That is one reviewer’s judgment, not a consensus or a guaranteed playtime, but it identifies the expansion’s central success: movement and combat finally reinforce each other instead of competing for attention.
What DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations adds
Bethesda released Revelations on July 7, 2026, as a paid campaign expansion for DOOM: The Dark Ages. The base game is required. The add-on contains six campaign levels, new demons, deeper puzzles and the Chain Spear, a weapon built around mobility as much as damage.

How long is the Revelations campaign?
PC Gamer reviewer Rory Norris estimated a 10–15 hour playthrough. That is an individual estimate, not a fixed completion time. Difficulty, exploration, puzzle solving and optional encounters can make the campaign shorter or longer, and the review does not establish a separate completion time for every difficulty or play style.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe six-level structure gives Revelations a clearer beginning and end than a small mission pack. It is long enough to develop the Chain Spear and introduce its enemies, while remaining compact enough for players who finished the main campaign and want a concentrated return to the setting. The campaign’s scale should be understood as six large levels rather than six brief missions; Bethesda itself calls them “six vast levels.”
The Chain Spear is the expansion’s defining change
According to Norris’s review, the Chain Spear can pull the Slayer toward enemies, slash targets, parry attacks and unlock upgrades. That combination changes the question asked by every encounter. Instead of choosing only between closing distance and holding a defensive position, you can use the spear to turn an enemy into a route through the arena, then continue the attack or answer a timed strike.

The mobility matters because it connects the two combat identities that define this version of DOOM. The Dark Ages emphasizes timing-based defense, particularly the rhythm of reading an attack and responding with a parry. DOOM Eternal is associated with faster movement and more freedom to navigate arenas. Norris’s assessment is that Revelations combines those approaches: movement becomes a way to set up defensive timing rather than an alternative to it.
The spear is not presented as a button that trivializes positioning. Its value grows as you learn when a pull is safe, which targets can be used as anchors and how a parry fits into the resulting distance. Upgrades give the tool a longer arc than a single novelty encounter, but the review’s descriptions are hands-on observations from one critic, not a promise that every player will experience the same balance.

Those additions broaden the number of combinations available during a fight. The important change is not simply a larger inventory; it is the ability to chain movement, melee pressure, ranged damage and defense without abandoning the timing rules that make The Dark Ages distinct.
Does Revelations solve The Dark Ages’ pacing problem?
Revelations addresses pacing by giving the Slayer a proactive way to cross space. In the base game’s timing-oriented design, defensive decisions can make an encounter feel deliberate: you wait for an opening, parry, then capitalize. The Chain Spear supplies an additional decision between those beats. You can pull yourself into an opening, reposition around a threat or escape a bad angle before the next attack lands.
That does not turn the expansion into a pure speed run. The parry system still governs the most important exchanges, and the new tool rewards accurate timing rather than replacing it. The result, in Norris’s reading, is a campaign that feels closer to DOOM Eternal in movement while retaining The Dark Ages’ combat cadence.
Rank #3
Whether that solves pacing for you depends on what you wanted from the base game. Players who found the slower, defensive rhythm too restrictive gain a meaningful mobility option. Players who prefer the deliberate shield-and-parry identity may appreciate that the spear extends it instead of removing it. Revelations is therefore an adjustment to the combat trade-off, not a rejection of the game’s original design.
Campaign levels, puzzles and new demons
Bethesda advertises deeper puzzles and new demons across the six-level campaign. The expansion’s story premise gives those spaces a personal focus: a wounded Slayer moving through purgatory while confronting betrayal and his past. That framing supports a more concentrated journey than a disconnected set of challenge rooms.
The deeper puzzle emphasis is significant because the Chain Spear is also a traversal tool. A weapon that pulls the Slayer toward enemies can influence how a level is read: combat arenas, enemy placement and route-finding all become related questions. The available material does not provide a room-by-room breakdown or a complete enemy list, so the safest conclusion is that Revelations expands the puzzle and combat vocabulary without claiming that every level is built around one identical gimmick.
New demons give the spear and the revised movement system targets that are unfamiliar from the base campaign. Their presence also carries into the Ripatorium, where Bethesda specifically names Revelations Leaders and Champions. The expansion is therefore not only a story chapter; its enemy additions have a post-campaign use.
Revelations compared with the base campaign and DOOM Eternal
The most useful comparison is not a raw weapon count. It is how each game asks you to move, defend and read an arena. The table below uses the editorial axes that matter for this expansion and distinguishes the reviewer’s interpretation from Bethesda’s confirmed content.

| Comparison axis | The Dark Ages base campaign | Revelations | DOOM Eternal reference point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movement and freedom | Built around the base game’s deliberate combat rhythm. | The Chain Spear adds enemy-pull mobility and more ways to cross an arena. Norris describes the result as faster and more open. | Norris identifies Eternal-style movement and level design as part of Revelations’ blend; this is a critic’s comparison, not a new Eternal mode. |
| Combat timing | Timing-based defense remains the defining idea. | Spear movement, slashes and parries can be combined, preserving timing while adding routes into and out of danger. | The comparison is about mobility and encounter flow, not a claim that Revelations copies Eternal’s full arsenal or progression. |
| Campaign structure | The original campaign. | Six new levels with new demons and deeper puzzles, centered on the Slayer’s purgatory story. | Used by the reviewer as a level-design reference rather than a direct content comparison. |
| Post-campaign arena content | The base Ripatorium. | Three arenas, Revelations enemies, a fully upgraded Revelations loadout, new Suit Perks and six curated presets after Master Arenas are completed. | Not evaluated here; the relevant question is how much additional arena experimentation Revelations supplies. |
This comparison explains why the expansion can feel more mobile without becoming a different game. Its new freedom is attached to the same defensive language, while its campaign and arena content give the new tool enough space to develop.
Ripatorium 3.0: what is free and what requires Revelations?
Official Update 4 separates a free Ripatorium 3.0 update from expansion-specific content. The core update is available to all owners of the base game. Revelations is required for the new arenas, enemies and loadout described below.
Expansion content
- Three arenas: Hell’s Core, Osseus and Classic.
- New enemies: Revelations Leaders and Champions.
- Expanded loadout: a fully upgraded Revelations setup with the Chain Spear and new Suit Perks.
- Curated encounters: six encounter presets designed around the added content.
Bethesda says these Revelations Ripatorium additions unlock after you complete the Master Arenas. That requirement matters if you buy the expansion primarily for custom combat: the content is not necessarily available immediately on a fresh save.
Free Ripatorium 3.0 features
- Save and load personal encounter presets.
- Continuous demon spawning.
- Customizable health-pickup behavior.
- Customizable ammunition-pickup behavior.
- A Berserk slider for adjusting the intensity of encounters.
The free features make the arena mode more useful even for players who do not purchase Revelations. The paid expansion adds the new arenas, demons, perks and spear-focused loadout on top of that foundation.
Review score and what it does—and does not—prove
Rory Norris of PC Gamer rated Revelations 90/100 in a review published July 14, 2026. His core argument is that the expansion successfully merges faster movement and level design with The Dark Ages’ timing-based combat. That score is one critic’s verdict; no aggregate reception, sales figure or player-count statistic is established here.

Norris reviewed the PC version on a Lenovo Legion 9i equipped with an RTX 4090, Intel Core i9-13980HX and 32GB of RAM, and marked the game Steam Deck Verified. Those details identify the conditions of that review. They do not establish frame rates, image quality or stability on other PCs, Steam Deck configurations or console versions, and no independent benchmark is available.
Steam Deck Verified is useful information for Deck owners, but it should not be read as a universal performance guarantee. The disclosed high-end laptop hardware also means the review’s visual and performance impressions should be separated from your own system’s capabilities.
Access, editions and troubleshooting
What you need
- A copy of DOOM: The Dark Ages on a supported platform.
- The Revelations entitlement, either through Premium Edition, Collectors Bundle or a standalone purchase.
- Enough installed storage for the base game and add-on; the supplied information does not state a separate file-size requirement.
Where to find the expansion
- Open the storefront for your platform: Xbox, Xbox PC, Steam, Battle.net or PlayStation 5.
- Confirm that your account owns Revelations or an edition that includes it.
- Install the add-on alongside the base game.
- Launch DOOM: The Dark Ages and select the Revelations campaign from the game’s campaign menu.
Bethesda Support reported that an entitlement issue affecting eligible Premium Edition users on Steam had been resolved at the time of its support update. If an included copy does not appear, verify that you are signed into the purchasing account, refresh the platform’s licenses or DLC list, restart the client and check for pending updates. Those are standard account-refresh steps; the support report does not establish that the issue is still widespread.
Is Revelations worth $19.99?
At Bethesda’s July 2026 launch price of US$19.99, Revelations offers a full six-level campaign, a new weapon system, new demons, deeper puzzles and additional arena content. The value is strongest for players who want more story and who enjoy learning a combat tool rather than merely receiving another set of missions.
The calculation changes if you already own Premium Edition or the Collectors Bundle, because the expansion is included. For owners of the standard edition, compare the current standalone price with the Premium Edition upgrade rather than assuming the launch prices remain unchanged. Regional storefronts may use different currencies, taxes or promotions.
Revelations is less compelling if you only want a brief post-campaign challenge mode and have no interest in the story. The Ripatorium additions require completing Master Arenas before they unlock, while the free Ripatorium 3.0 features are available to base-game owners without buying the expansion.
Who should play Revelations?
Buy or play it if you want:
- A new DOOM: The Dark Ages campaign rather than isolated combat trials.
- More movement options without abandoning parry-based defense.
- A weapon that rewards practice with pulls, slashes, parries and upgrades.
- New demons and a spear-focused loadout for Ripatorium experiments.
- A campaign that PC Gamer’s reviewer estimated at 10–15 hours.
Consider waiting if you:
- Only want the free Ripatorium 3.0 improvements, which arrive for base-game owners without the expansion.
- Prefer the original combat pace and do not want an additional mobility layer.
- Need confirmed performance data for a particular console or PC configuration; the available review used high-end PC hardware and supplied no independent benchmarks.
Final verdict
Revelations makes a persuasive case for its existence by changing how the Slayer occupies space. The Chain Spear does not erase The Dark Ages’ defensive identity; it gives that identity a faster way to create and exploit openings. Six campaign levels, new demons, deeper puzzles and the expanded Ripatorium make the addition broader than a single-weapon showcase.

PC Gamer’s 90/100 review is a strong endorsement, but it remains one critic’s experience on a high-end PC. Taken on its own terms, Revelations is best understood as a mobility-focused campaign expansion for players who wanted The Dark Ages’ timing mechanics with more room to move.
