What to prepare before you design
Dorothy’s request follows Dressmaker’s normal commission loop. The order matters because each stage gives you information needed by the next one:
- Read the commission card. Open Dorothy’s request and leave the five target lines visible while working.
- Measure and set the mannequin. Use the game’s mannequin setup before drafting the outfit so the design is being made for the commission rather than a different project.
- Open the sketchbook. The pattern-piece selection happens here. Select every piece named in Dorothy’s request before moving to fabric preview.
- Buy or choose fabric. Preview the tags and the resulting Warm and Eclectic scores in the Emporium before committing.
- Choose accessories. Plan for both required accessory categories; owning an item is not enough unless it is later placed on the dress.
- Lay out, cut, sew, decorate, check, and deliver. Grain alignment, stitching quality, and final placement all affect whether the card turns green.
If you start cutting before checking the card, you can end up with a visually suitable outfit that misses one of the numeric lines or lacks a qualifying accessory.
Select the four required garment pieces
In the sketchbook, select the complete set rather than substituting a similar-looking pattern. Dorothy’s walkthrough names four pieces:

This is the required bodice pattern for the commission. Select the Coat Dress Bodice exactly as listed; a different bodice can change the resulting design scores and no longer matches the documented build.
Mandarin Collar
Add the Mandarin Collar to the bodice selection. It is a separate pattern piece, so choosing a coat-style bodice alone does not complete the required set.
Long Cuffed Sleeve
Use the Long Cuffed Sleeve pattern. Confirm that the selected sleeve is the long cuffed version before cutting; a different sleeve pattern is not the documented solution.

Finish the pattern selection with the Coat Dress Skirt. Once all four pieces are selected, move to the fabric preview and compare the displayed tags and scores.

Choose fabric for Warm and Eclectic
The walkthrough recommends previewing velvet choices that carry warm and eclectic tags. The fabric can vary if the completed card reaches the targets, so treat the named velvet as a dependable starting point rather than an unchangeable rule.

Do not infer success from a fabric’s name or color. Select the fabric in the Emporium and inspect the preview values and tags with the four-piece pattern selected. If the preview does not put the design on course for Warm 50 and Eclectic 50, return to the fabric list before buying or cutting.
Cut the pieces correctly
After choosing the pattern and fabric, the cutting stage is more than a confirmation prompt. Each piece must be laid along its grain line.
- Place a pattern piece on the cutting layout. Identify the grain line shown on that piece before confirming its position.
- Rotate the piece until the grain is correct. Do not accept a convenient angle simply because it fits the available space. Align the piece with its indicated grain line.
- Repeat for every piece. Check the Coat Dress Bodice, Mandarin Collar, Long Cuffed Sleeve, and Coat Dress Skirt individually.
- Cut only after all alignments are correct. The documented walkthrough treats grain placement as part of a successful build, not an optional presentation detail.
Keeping the commission card open while cutting helps separate two different checks: grain alignment is a construction step, while the Warm and Eclectic numbers are score checks. Both need attention.

Pin and sew without sacrificing Quality
Once the pieces are cut, pin them to the mannequin and follow the seam tracks in the sewing interface.

- Pin each piece to the mannequin. Make sure the cut pieces are attached before starting the seam pass.
- Follow the marked seam tracks. Keep the stitching on the indicated path rather than rushing through the operation.
- Work carefully around every seam. The walkthrough warns that rushed or uneven stitching can reduce Quality, which can pull the design below the required 75.
- Finish the full garment before decorating. Accessories are added after sewing through the accessories shop.
A design can have the correct pattern and fabric yet fail because the sewing result lowers Quality. If the card later shows that the quality line is short, the first thing to review is the stitching pass, not the accessory purchase.
Add a qualifying Jewel and Brooch
Open the accessories shop after the dress has been sewn. Dorothy’s card requires one item from each category, and the items must be attached to the garment.
Place the Jewel
Buy or select an accessory identified by the game as a Jewel, then position it on the dress. The requirement is counted when the Jewel is placed on the garment, not when it is merely owned or sitting in the shop inventory.
Place the Brooch
Do the same with an item identified as a Brooch. Place it on the garment before leaving the decoration stage.
Avoid the button mistake
A button does not count as a Brooch for this commission. If the Brooch line remains unfulfilled after decorating, remove any assumption that a button is equivalent and place an actual Brooch-category accessory instead.
Check the card before delivery
Before taking the dress to the photo booth, inspect Dorothy’s commission card again. Every required line should be green. This is the last point at which you can correct a fabric choice, improve a construction result, or add a missing accessory without attempting delivery with an incomplete outfit.

- Confirm that the quality line has reached its target after sewing.
- Confirm that the warmth and eclecticism lines reflect the chosen fabric and the complete garment.
- Confirm that the placed accessories have registered in their respective categories.
- Confirm that the Jewel and Brooch are visibly attached to the dress, rather than only purchased.
If any line is still incomplete, return to the relevant stage instead of proceeding to the booth. The exact fabric is flexible; the displayed requirements are not.
Submit Dorothy’s finished dress
- Take the completed dress to the photo booth. Delivery is handled there rather than from the fabric or accessories screen.
- Select “Complete Commission.” Use this option only after all five lines on the card are green.
- Wait for the commission result. A successful submission triggers Dorothy’s progression rewards and the next pigeon-related content.
The photo-booth action is the final submission step. Simply finishing the sewing or opening the card does not deliver the commission.
Rewards and progression after a successful delivery
Completing Dorothy’s request grants a friendship and a prestige star. It also enables Berty the pigeon’s adoption, unlocks the messenger pigeon mail system, and awards the You’ve Got Mail achievement.
The commission additionally unlocks three patterns:
- Bell Sleeve
- Katarina Bodice
- Godet Skirt
These unlocks are tied to successful delivery, so they should appear as progression results after the photo-booth completion rather than after merely purchasing fabric or sewing a partial outfit.

You do not have to use one immutable fabric-and-accessory combination. If you are comparing several valid designs, use the commission card as a decision framework.

- Compare Quality first. A beautiful combination that falls below the required quality cannot pass.
- Compare Warm next. Check whether the complete outfit reaches the warmth target, not just whether the fabric looks heavy or cozy.
- Compare Eclectic after that. Use the displayed score and tags instead of guessing from color names.
- Verify the accessory counts. Make sure one placed item is registered as a Jewel and another as a Brooch.
- Check your budget. If two options meet the same card targets, the less expensive route may be preferable, but the available prices can vary with the items you select.
- Check grain alignment and sewing quality. A promising preview can still be undermined by incorrect layout or uneven stitching.
This order prevents a common error: choosing a fabric because it scores well in one category while overlooking a missing accessory or a Quality loss during construction.
Troubleshooting common failure points
The Warm or Eclectic line is below target
Return to the fabric preview and compare the velvet options with the full four-piece pattern selected. Green Floral Burnout Velvet is the documented reliable starting point; Starry Night Velvet and Lime Technicolor Velvet are alternatives that can score well. Recheck the live numbers before cutting.
Quality is below target after sewing
Review the sewing pass. The documented warning is that rushed or uneven stitching can reduce Quality. When rebuilding, pin the pieces correctly and follow the seam tracks carefully.
The Jewel line is not green
Open the accessories shop and verify that an actual Jewel-category item is positioned on the dress. Purchasing it without placing it does not satisfy the card.
The Brooch line is not green
Check that the placed item is a Brooch, not a button. Place the qualifying Brooch directly on the garment and inspect the card again.
The dress looks complete but cannot be submitted
Inspect all five card lines. The commission is not ready for the photo booth until every line is green, including both accessory categories and the construction score.

- Set the mannequin for the project.
- Select Coat Dress Bodice, Mandarin Collar, Long Cuffed Sleeve, and Coat Dress Skirt in the sketchbook.

Following the stages in that order gives you a controlled way to diagnose a miss. Fabric preview addresses Warm and Eclectic, grain and sewing address the garment’s construction and Quality, and decoration addresses the Jewel and Brooch counts. The final green-card check then confirms that the individual stages produced a valid commission before you submit it at the photo booth.
