“The program can’t start because dot3hc.dll is missing from your computer.”
dot3hc.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component associated with wired Ethernet and 802.1X authentication, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file.
Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- The error appeared after an update, cleanup, crash, or unexpected shutdown: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- Windows Security shows dot3hc.dll in quarantine: verify its location and Microsoft signature before restoring it.
- Only wired enterprise network authentication fails: check the Wired AutoConfig service and network adapter.
- Only one program reports the error: repair or reinstall that program after repairing Windows.
- The file exists but will not load: investigate dependencies, architecture, corruption, and recent system changes.
- Repair tools cannot restore Windows: use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair installation.
Do not begin by downloading dot3hc.dll from a DLL download page. A replacement can be malicious, unsigned, built for the wrong Windows architecture, or unable to fix the damaged component that caused the error.

What dot3hc.dll does
The name “Dot3” refers to IEEE 802.3 Ethernet. Windows uses dot3hc.dll as part of its wired-networking infrastructure, alongside components such as dot3api.dll, dot3cfg.dll, and dot3mm.dll.
The related Wired AutoConfig service, named dot3svc, handles IEEE 802.1X authentication on Ethernet interfaces. This matters mainly on business, school, and other managed networks. Many home users will never directly use this functionality.

dot3hc.dll is a protected Windows component associated with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Corporation. It is not an ordinary third-party application file. Public metadata identifies Microsoft signing and Windows builds, but the exact version varies with the Windows release, architecture, language, and servicing state.
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
C:WindowsSystem32dot3hc.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64dot3hc.dll
The names are counterintuitive. System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. Do not copy a file between these folders manually.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first-line repair for a missing, corrupted, or incorrectly replaced dot3hc.dll.

- Press Win+I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if no restart is immediately requested.
Then run the repair commands.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start and type Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click the result.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It may remain on one percentage for a while. Do not close the window during the scan.
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends this order because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its repair source.
Restart the computer when SFC finishes, then open the program that reported the error.
What the results mean
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no damaged protected files. If the error remains, a dependency, application file, or architecture mismatch may be involved.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means restart and test again.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If it still fails, use a matching Windows repair source or recovery option.
- If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use genuine installation media matching the installed Windows edition and build:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual Windows folder on the repair source.

Repeatedly hunting for the right component files and interpreting changing SFC results can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan showing what it detects, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows DISM and SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path.
Check only dot3hc.dll
For a targeted verification on a 64-bit Windows installation, run:
sfc /verifyfile=%windir%System32dot3hc.dll
To ask SFC to repair that file specifically, run:
sfc /scanfile=%windir%System32dot3hc.dll
Use the correct path for the Windows installation and architecture. These commands do not repair a missing dependency used by dot3hc.dll.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can quarantine a genuine system file after a detection, a failed update, or a mistaken classification.

- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving dot3hc.dll.
- Expand the entry and review the detected file path and action.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The file was located in the Windows system directory, not Downloads, Temp, or an application folder.
- Its publisher and signature identify Microsoft.
- The detection is clearly a quarantine action rather than an active malware warning.
To inspect a file’s signature:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the file.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft.
If the file is unsigned, is in an unexpected folder, or Windows Security still reports a threat, do not restore it. Run a full scan and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.
Fix 3: Check the wired network service
Use this step when the missing-file message coincides with failed wired 802.1X authentication.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Wired AutoConfig.
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type according to your organization’s network requirements.
- Select Start if the service is stopped.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Do not change corporate authentication settings without the network administrator’s instructions. A home Ethernet connection usually does not require 802.1X configuration.

If authentication still fails, check the adapter:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the wired Ethernet adapter.
- Select Properties and review the General tab for a device error.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver, or install the correct driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer.
The DLL itself is not a network adapter driver. Reinstalling a driver will not replace a damaged Windows component.
When several adapters are present, manually identifying the right model and finding a compatible package can take longer than expected. Fix 4: Repair the program named in the error
A program can display a dot3hc.dll error even when the underlying problem is a missing dependent module or a damaged application installation.
If only one program fails:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Locate the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
- Otherwise uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
For older desktop software, use Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features, select the application, and choose Change or Repair when available.

Reinstalling the program is appropriate for a damaged application, but Windows component repair remains the correct fix for a damaged system DLL.
Fix 5: Check architecture and file location
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit DLL in place of its native component.
Check the Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Review System type.
Do not download a 32-bit or 64-bit copy based only on the error message. Let Windows restore the correct copy through DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or matching installation media.
If you manually copied dot3hc.dll into an application folder, remove that copy only if you are certain it was not supplied by the application, then run the Windows repair commands. An unsigned copy outside the Windows directories is suspicious and should be scanned.

Does regsvr32 fix dot3hc.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 registers certain DLLs that expose appropriate COM registration entry points. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command. Some builds of dot3hc.dll may expose registration-related functions, but registering a corrupted, mismatched, or manually downloaded file does not restore Windows component integrity.
Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 dot3hc.dll
unless Microsoft or a qualified administrator has specifically identified a registration problem with a valid matching Windows file. For a missing or corrupted component, use DISM and SFC.

System Restore is appropriate when the problem began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change.
From Windows:
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs without changing personal documents.
If Windows will not start normally, open Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore.
Fix 7: Perform an in-place Windows repair
If DISM, SFC, quarantine checks, and System Restore do not restore the component, use official Windows installation media for the installed edition and architecture.
Start the installer from within Windows and select the option to Keep personal files and apps. Confirm that option before proceeding. An in-place repair replaces Windows system files while preserving supported applications, settings, and personal files.

Back up important data first. A clean installation is a last resort, not the next step after a single DLL message.
FAQ
Is dot3hc.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. An unsigned copy in Downloads, a temporary folder, or an unfamiliar application directory should be treated as suspicious. Verify the path and digital signature, scan the computer, and repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement.
Is dot3hc.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No verified evidence identifies it as belonging to those runtimes. It is associated with Windows wired-networking infrastructure.
Why does the message say “specified module could not be found”?
That wording can mean dot3hc.dll itself is absent, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. DISM and SFC are safer than copying a file into the program directory.
What if SFC says everything is fine?
Check whether the file exists in the expected Windows directory, verify its signature, and determine whether another dependent module is missing. If only one application fails, repair that application and review its event logs.

Should I enable a Windows Feature?
Not as a general fix. Windows Features does not provide a standalone dot3hc.dll package. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or an in-place repair instead.
Can I copy dot3hc.dll from another computer?
Do not do this. Even a genuine file can be wrong for the installed Windows build, servicing level, or architecture. Windows repair tools are safer and preserve the component relationship.
