Valve reported taking action against 65,594 smurf accounts in the week before its December 19, 2024 Frostivus update. That figure counts smurf accounts—not every cheater, griefer, or other player mentioned in the announcement—and it is a historical one-week total, not a current or cumulative count.
What does the 65,594 figure count?
The Frostivus update’s exact figure is 65,594. The announcement text, preserved in SteamDB’s archive of the Dota 2 update, attaches that number to smurf accounts Valve acted against during the preceding week. “65,500” is a rounded version of the figure.
Valve also referred to high-MMR griefers, bug exploiters, win traders, and other disruptive players, but did not give a count for those groups in the cited update text. The 65,594 figure therefore cannot be used as a total for all bans or enforcement actions.
What is the timeframe?
The update was published December 19, 2024, and described action taken “this week.” This makes 65,594 a report about one week in December 2024—not the number of smurf accounts banned since Frostivus began, a running total, or a statement of how many accounts are banned today.

How does this compare with Valve’s earlier smurf ban?
Valve’s September 1, 2023 smurf policy announcement defined smurfs as alternate accounts used to avoid correct matchmaking rating (MMR), abandon games, cheat, grief, or otherwise behave toxically. Valve said it permanently banned 90,000 smurf accounts that had been active over the preceding few months and traced each to a main account. Depending on the case, the linked main account could receive penalties ranging from a behavior-score adjustment to a permanent ban.
The 2023 and 2024 figures cover different stated periods, so they should not be added together or treated as directly comparable measures of enforcement over a standard interval.

What did Valve say about cheating software?
Smurfing is not the only conduct Valve has addressed. In a February 21, 2023 anti-cheat announcement, Valve described detecting a cheat that exposed hidden game data by using a honeypot area in the client. It said it had permanently banned more than 40,000 accounts using third-party software to cheat over the prior few weeks.
Valve also warned: “If you are running any application that reads data from the Dota client as you’re playing games, your account can be permanently banned from playing Dota.” The warning included professional players and Valve competitive events. Players should avoid applications that read Dota client data during a match.

How can players report suspected smurfing?
Valve directs players to use Dota 2’s in-game reporting options when they suspect smurfing. The company says reports help it track offenders and inform its anti-smurf work. A report is a way to flag suspected behavior; the 2024 update does not state how many reports led to the 65,594 actions.
