Valve officially recorded a fix for independent Hand of Midas cooldowns in August 2023; a separate report the following month described a backpack interaction that reportedly shortened the item’s recharge. They are distinct incidents, and the backpack exploit should be treated as historical—not as a verified way to gain an advantage now.
What did Valve officially fix in August 2023?
In its August 9, 2023 update notes, Valve stated: “Fixed Midas cooldowns being independent of each other.” This confirms that Valve fixed an issue involving separate Hand of Midas cooldowns. The note does not describe the backpack interaction reported later, so the two should not be treated as the same bug.
What was the September backpack exploit?
On September 21, 2023, Escorenews reported that putting Hand of Midas in the backpack and then returning it to the active inventory could reduce its recharge from 100 seconds to 50 seconds. According to that report, cooldown time continued during a six-second period when the returned item could not be used. These mechanics are attributed to Escorenews, not independently verified here.
Escorenews also reported that the issue was fixed within a few hours of a GitHub issue being created. That is secondary reporting; Valve’s August patch note documents the separate independent-cooldown fix, not this September backpack exploit.

Was there another Midas bug involving Spirit Bear?
A June 21, 2024 Reddit post described a different reported recharge problem involving Lone Druid’s Spirit Bear, with the poster saying it dated back to patch 7.34. This is community testimony, not official confirmation, and it does not establish that the backpack exploit was involved.
Is the 7.34 Midas glitch still active, and were players punished?
The reports describe the September 2023 backpack interaction as fixed shortly after it was reported. The available official update archive, which includes Valve’s September 15, 2026 7.41f update, documents other later Hand of Midas bugs, including a Conjurer’s Catalyst interaction and Meepo exploits, but does not name the 2023 backpack exploit. Those later bugs do not show that the backpack exploit remains active. Its exact present-day status has not been independently verified by the sources cited here.
