Double-Click Not Opening Files or Folders in Windows 11? A Complete Fix Guide

By VGSources Team 8 min read

When a double-click does not open a file or folder, the cause is usually one of four things: Windows is set to expect a different click speed, File Explorer is malfunctioning, the mouse driver is failing, or the mouse hardware itself is defective. Work through the checks in that order. Start with reversible settings and a restart, then test the mouse on another computer before considering replacement or Windows recovery.

First, identify which part is failing

The fastest way to avoid changing the wrong setting is to separate a click-recognition problem from a File Explorer problem. File Explorer is Windows’ file-management application; it is also where game saves, screenshots, installers and mod files are normally opened.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open File Explorer from its taskbar icon, or press Windows+E.
  2. Try opening the same file or folder with a double-click.
  3. If nothing happens, right-click the item and choose Open.

If right-clicking and choosing Open works while a double-click does not, the item and Explorer can probably open correctly. Concentrate on double-click timing, the selected click behavior, mouse drivers and the physical mouse. This is a practical diagnostic distinction based on Microsoft’s separate guidance for mouse settings and File Explorer; it is not a Microsoft-published failure-rate test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If File Explorer will not launch with either the taskbar icon or Windows+E, treat Explorer as the primary fault. Do not start by changing the mouse speed; use the Explorer repair sequence later in this guide.

Check the symptom against the likely branch

What you observe Most useful next check Scope of the problem
Double-clicks fail, but right-click > Open works Adjust Double-click speed and verify Explorer’s click mode Mouse input or click interpretation
File Explorer opens, but many items ignore double-clicks Test another mouse or another USB port, then update the driver Input device, driver or settings
File Explorer will not open at all Install updates, restart, then use Microsoft’s system-file and recovery options Explorer or Windows system components
The mouse fails on a second computer Replace the mouse Strong evidence of hardware failure
The mouse works normally on a second computer Return to Windows click settings and driver checks Likely local Windows configuration or driver

Set the correct double-click speed

Windows exposes a Double-click speed control in Mouse Properties. If the interval is set too fast for your hand, two deliberate clicks may be interpreted as two separate single clicks. If it is set unusually slow, accidental second clicks can be interpreted as a double-click. The setting changes how close together the clicks must be, not the physical speed of the mouse pointer.

Windows 11 path

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices, then Mouse.
  3. Choose Additional mouse settings. This opens the classic Mouse Properties dialog.
  4. On the Buttons tab, find Double-click speed.
  5. Move the slider toward Slow if Windows is missing your second click, or toward Fast if ordinary single clicks are being treated as doubles.
  6. Use the test area beside the slider after every adjustment. Stop at the fastest setting you can trigger reliably without rushing.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.

These are Microsoft’s documented steps for changing double-click speed. The best position is personal: it depends on how far apart you naturally place your clicks and whether you use a fingertip, claw or palm grip.

Verify that Windows is using double-click to open

File Explorer has a separate click-behavior choice. Open File Explorer Options by searching for it from Start, then look for the option that reads Double-click to open an item (single-click to select). The wording can vary slightly between Windows versions and language packs. Select that behavior, apply it and test a folder.

If the option is set to single-click to open, a double-click is unnecessary; the first click should open the item. If single clicks only highlight items and double-clicks still do nothing, continue with the hardware and Explorer checks rather than repeatedly changing the slider.

Use keyboard and right-click tests before changing Windows

These tests establish whether the item itself is accessible:

  • Press Windows+E and navigate to a known folder.
  • Select an item once and press Enter. Windows should open the selected file or folder using the default association.
  • Right-click the item and choose Open.
  • Try a second, ordinary folder, such as Documents, to rule out a problem limited to one path or file type.

Enter and right-click use different input paths from a mouse double-click. If either method opens the item, Windows can usually access it and the investigation should stay focused on click recognition. If no method opens folders, move to the Explorer repair section.

When File Explorer itself will not open

Microsoft describes File Explorer as the place to find and open files and folders and notes that a failure to start makes everyday tasks such as opening folders and managing storage difficult. If the taskbar icon and Windows+E both fail, use this escalation order.

1. Install pending Windows updates

Open Start > Settings > Windows Update and install available updates. Update names and restart prompts vary by release. Microsoft notes that restarting can finish pending updates even when Windows does not display an explicit “restart required” message.

2. Restart normally

After updates finish, choose Start > Power > Restart. A restart reloads Explorer and its shell components without immediately changing personal files or settings. Test Windows+E again after signing back in.

3. Run Windows system-file checks

If Explorer still refuses to start, use Microsoft’s System File Checker and related system-repair guidance. These checks are intended for damaged or missing Windows components. Follow Microsoft’s current instructions for opening an elevated command window and running the checks for your Windows edition; do not download an unofficial “cleaner” to replace them.

4. Use Automatic Repair only when normal repair fails

Microsoft lists Automatic Repair among the later options when File Explorer will not start. It is a recovery operation rather than a mouse-setting fix, so save work and follow the on-screen instructions carefully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Reset the PC as the final escalation

Microsoft places Reset this PC after updates, restart, system-file checks and Automatic Repair. A reset can remove applications and alter settings, depending on the option selected. Back up game saves, screenshots, configuration files and other data before using it, and choose the least destructive reset option that addresses the confirmed Windows problem.

Test the mouse on another computer

Cross-testing is the most useful hardware check because it changes the computer while keeping the mouse constant. Disconnect the mouse, connect it to another Windows computer and try ordinary single clicks, double-clicks and folder opening.

Result on the second computer Interpretation Action
Double-clicks fail there too The fault follows the mouse, which is strong evidence of defective hardware Replace the mouse; a basic wired USB mouse is the most direct replacement category
Double-clicks work normally there The mouse can perform the action, so the original computer’s settings, driver or Windows components remain suspects Return to Double-click speed, click behavior and driver updates on the original PC
Only one USB port fails The port or its connection may be involved rather than the mouse Try another known-working port and repeat the test

Microsoft states that a mouse that does not work on another PC might need replacement. That guidance supports the replacement decision, but it does not establish a particular brand, model, price or durability rating.

Update or reinstall the mouse driver

If the mouse works on another computer, update its driver on the affected PC. You can use Windows Update or Device Manager. In Device Manager, expand the mouse and pointing-device category, select the relevant device, choose the driver-update action and restart if Windows requests it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Driver work is most relevant when the mouse behaves inconsistently across applications, disappears and reconnects, or begins failing after a Windows or peripheral update. If the only symptom is an incorrect double-click interval and the cross-test is clean, changing the Mouse Properties setting is the lower-risk first move.

Choose the least disruptive fix first

Option What it changes Reversibility Use it when
Double-click speed slider How close two clicks must be to count as a double-click Immediate and fully reversible Right-click Open works but double-click does not
File Explorer click behavior Whether single-click or double-click opens an item Immediate and fully reversible The interaction does not match your intended setting
Restart and Windows Update Reloads Explorer and applies pending Windows components Low impact; personal files remain Explorer is unstable or will not launch
Driver update Refreshes software that communicates with the mouse Usually reversible through Device Manager The mouse works elsewhere but behaves incorrectly on one PC
Automatic Repair Attempts broader Windows startup and system repairs More disruptive Explorer remains unavailable after ordinary repair
Reset this PC Reinstalls or refreshes Windows, with app and setting consequences Highest impact Only after backups and earlier repairs fail

Windows 10 and Windows 11 considerations

The Mouse Properties dialog and the general File Explorer behavior are shared across recent Windows releases, but the route to those dialogs can differ. Windows 11 normally uses Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings. On Windows 10, search for Mouse settings, then open the additional or advanced mouse-options link to reach Mouse Properties. File Explorer Options may also use slightly different labels.

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10 under its standard support lifecycle. The double-click checks still apply to an existing Windows 10 installation, but a continuing Explorer fault should also be considered in the context of that unsupported operating system.

Common mistakes that waste time

  • Changing pointer speed instead of double-click speed: pointer speed controls cursor movement; it does not change the allowed interval between clicks.
  • Assuming every failure is a bad mouse: first see whether right-click Open, Enter or a second computer produces a different result.
  • Jumping to a reset: settings changes, a restart, updates and a cross-computer test are safer and preserve more of your game and personal setup.
  • Installing an unofficial registry tweak or cleaner: Microsoft’s documented path does not establish such tools as universal fixes for this symptom.
  • Testing only one file: a damaged association or unusual item can mislead you. Test multiple ordinary folders and a known file.
  • Ignoring the click-mode setting: a system configured for single-click opening will not behave like the conventional double-click workflow.

A practical order for a gaming PC

Use this short sequence when you need to reach a game folder, save directory or screenshot quickly:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows+E and test a normal folder.
  2. Use right-click Open or Enter to determine whether Explorer can open it without a double-click.
  3. Set Mouse Properties > Buttons > Double-click speed to a comfortable testable position.
  4. Confirm Double-click to open an item (single-click to select) in File Explorer Options if that is the workflow you want.
  5. Restart and install Windows updates if Explorer itself is failing.
  6. Test the mouse on another computer.
  7. Update the driver when the mouse works elsewhere but not on this PC.
  8. Reserve Automatic Repair and Reset this PC for a confirmed Explorer or Windows-system failure that survives the reversible steps.

This order narrows the fault while preserving your files and game configuration for as long as possible.
