Double Fine revealed Kiln as a full game on January 22, 2026, nearly nine years after the project was selected for prototyping at the studio’s Amnesia Fortnight event in 2017. The earlier milestone was a prototype selection—not a formal announcement of the commercial game—and Double Fine says the project changed and grew substantially before its reveal.
Was Kiln announced in 2017?
Not as a full game. Double Fine’s January 2026 announcement traces Kiln to a project selected for prototyping during Amnesia Fortnight 2017. The studio presented the game publicly as a full release on January 22, 2026, during Xbox Developer Direct. The gap between those milestones is nearly nine years; “almost 10 years” is a rounded description, not evidence of a decade of continuous full-scale development. Double Fine’s announcement also links to the original pitch by project lead Derek Brand.
What kind of game is Kiln?
Kiln is an online multiplayer pottery party brawler. Players control colorful spirits, shape ceramic vessels on a simulated pottery wheel, and then use their creations in competitive play. A pot is more than a visual choice: Double Fine says its shape and size affect attributes, play style, and abilities. Examples include plates, jugs, cups, bowls, bottles, and chalices. Players can decorate them with cosmetic elements such as glazes, handles, spouts, toppers, charms, and stickers. The game page describes the pottery and customization features.
Quench: the team objective
The announced central mode, Quench, is 4v4. Each team gathers water, fights through the opposing players, and tries to douse the other team’s kiln while protecting its own. In other words, pottery-making feeds into a team objective rather than serving only as a separate crafting activity. Double Fine’s reveal outlines the mode.

The Wedge: a shared hub
The Wedge is a shared space for practicing pottery, decorating vessels, and showing creations to other players. That gives the game a social and creative component alongside Quench’s team competition.
When did Kiln release, and where can you play it?
Kiln launched on April 23, 2026. Double Fine’s announced launch platforms and services include Windows, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Xbox Play Anywhere, Steam, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Availability can vary by region and storefront, so check the relevant store for current access. The release date and platform list appear on Double Fine’s game page and in its launch details.
What does Kiln cost now?
In a September 2, 2026 update, Double Fine listed new US prices of $7.99 for Standard and $9.99 for Fired Up. The studio said regional adjustments apply in some locations; storefront prices may also change, so confirm the price where you plan to buy. At launch in March, the studio had listed prices of $19.99 and $29.99 respectively, but those are superseded by the September update. Fired Up includes the base game and premium cosmetic items, according to the launch details. The updated prices and additional changes are in the Bisque Update.

The important distinction is between a project’s origin and the announcement of its finished form. Kiln began as an Amnesia Fortnight prototype selection in 2017, then emerged as a substantially changed and expanded game in 2026. The dates establish a long interval between the prototype milestone and reveal; they do not establish uninterrupted development at full production scale.
