Down in the Dumps (1996) PC Walkthrough: Puzzle Hints and Solutions

Down in the Dumps is the 1996 Philips Media point-and-click adventure in which the Blub family searches for parts to repair a crashed spaceship. The most reliable surviving walkthrough is the archived GameFAQs PC solution, dated December 3, 1996. It covers the named episodes The Blub, the Rat, The Hypnotic Machine, The Abominable Robin Blub and The Bum.

Use the hints below in order: explore and inspect first, then reveal the episode-specific item actions only when you are ready for spoilers. The archived solution demonstrates one route, not a guaranteed exclusive sequence; its own advice notes that some problems have more than one solution.

How to use this walkthrough without spoiling every puzzle

Adventure games of this period often hide progress behind a small object, an overlooked hotspot or a conversation option. Before reading a complete solution, make a deliberate pass through the current location:

  1. Move the cursor over the entire scene, including edges, floor areas and objects partly covered by a character.
  2. Pick up every object that can be collected, even if it seems unrelated to the immediate problem.
  3. Inspect or activate each visible object and repeat the inspection after a character moves.
  4. Talk to every available character and exhaust the useful dialogue before leaving.
  5. Try sensible combinations and uses, but remember that not every collected item has a purpose in the current episode.
  6. Save before testing an irreversible-looking action, then reload if an experiment produces no progress.

Characters can obscure objects, so a scene that appears empty may change when someone walks away or when you switch control. The archived guide specifically recommends visiting each location, collecting items, examining the screen carefully and experimenting. Treat the sequence below as a worked route when broad exploration has stopped producing a result.

Episode 1: The Blub, the Rat

What to look for

The opening episode establishes the game’s basic pattern: search the environment, collect apparently ordinary objects and use them in a context that is not always obvious. Inspect the scene before trying to solve the immediate obstacle. If a character or animated element is covering part of the screen, wait for the obstruction to move and check that area again.

The archived route: rope and cheese

The reproduced solution for this episode uses rope and cheese. Make sure both objects are in your inventory, then apply them as the guide directs to deal with the rat-related problem. The important practical point is that the two items belong to the same solution path: finding one and ignoring the other leaves the episode unresolved.

Because the guide presents one solution rather than every possible solution, do not conclude that a different use order is wrong solely because it does not match the archived sequence. If the expected interaction does not trigger, recheck that you have examined the relevant hotspot, that both items were actually collected and that no conversation or intervening action is still required.

Episode 2: The Hypnotic Machine

Inventory work matters more here

The Hypnotic Machine section is the clearest example of a combination puzzle in the archived walkthrough. Progress depends on gathering objects, retaining them while you investigate the area and combining items rather than testing each object only on the first obstacle you see.

  1. Search the whole location and collect every available object.
  2. Inspect the new objects individually so their possible uses become clear.
  3. Try combining compatible inventory items before abandoning the area.
  4. Use the resulting combination on the machine or the associated obstacle as specified by the route.
  5. If nothing changes, revisit earlier screens; an item that looked decorative may be the missing component.

The surviving excerpt does not establish a complete modern item-by-item inventory list, so a responsible guide should not invent names for objects that the archived text does not identify. Use the combination logic above alongside the original on-screen labels. Keep unused items until the episode is complete: the general guide warns that some collected objects are not useful, but that judgment is safest after you have tested the plausible combinations.

Recognizing a failed combination

A failed attempt usually means one of three things: one component has not been collected, the items must be combined in inventory rather than used directly on the scene, or the machine requires a preceding interaction. Check all three before repeatedly clicking the same pair. Reloading an earlier save can also help if an accidental action changed the available state.

Episode 3: The Abominable Robin Blub

Dialogue is part of the puzzle

In The Abominable Robin Blub, the archived route emphasizes conversation and route clues rather than a single famous inventory combination. Speak with the characters in the location, read each response carefully and follow the directions embedded in the dialogue. A line that sounds like flavor text may identify where to travel next or indicate which path is currently valid.

Following the route clues

  1. Begin by talking to every character who is available.
  2. Record names, destinations and directional hints mentioned in the conversation.
  3. Visit the location suggested by those clues instead of wandering randomly through every exit.
  4. After each significant conversation, inspect the scene again; a new object or route may become available.
  5. If a destination does not work, return to the speaker and check whether another dialogue option must be selected first.

The guide’s route is a demonstration, not proof that every player must choose identical dialogue in identical order. When your conversation choices produce a different but coherent direction, test that route before resetting the game. The objective is to use the information characters provide, not to click through dialogue without reading it.

Episode 4: The Bum

Switch between characters deliberately

The Bum requires switching between characters. If an obstacle seems impossible for the currently selected character, change control rather than assuming the game is blocked. One character may be able to reach, inspect or manipulate something that another cannot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify which characters are currently available.
  2. Switch to each character and inspect the same area from that character’s position.
  3. Collect any item one character can reach, then check whether another character can use it.
  4. Repeat the conversation and hotspot checks after switching; the available actions may differ.
  5. When progress stops, test cooperative actions in which one character’s position or action enables the other’s.

The archived solution specifically calls for changing characters in this section. Do not treat the character selector as a cosmetic feature: it is a core control for solving the episode.

A practical stuck-player checklist

Use this checklist before consulting the full route again. It targets the failure modes most common in a 1990s point-and-click interface.

  • Inventory: Have you collected every visible object, including items partly hidden behind a character?
  • Hotspots: Did you move the cursor over the borders of the screen, floor and background objects?
  • Inspection: Did you examine an object after the scene changed?
  • Dialogue: Did you speak with every character and read all available lines?
  • Combinations: Did you try plausible inventory combinations, especially in The Hypnotic Machine?
  • Character control: In The Bum, did you switch to every available character?
  • State: Did you save before an experiment and reload if an action may have put the scene in an unhelpful state?
  • Assumptions: Are you treating one unused item as proof of a dead end? The guide cautions that not every collected item is useful.

Why the archived route may differ from your game

The walkthrough credited to Wayne Roberts as editor reproduces solution material dated December 3, 1996 and includes a warning from Lu Richardson: “There is more than one solution to the same problem, but I will give you only one of them; you can always experiment for yourselves.” That qualification matters. The listed rope-and-cheese action, machine combinations, dialogue route and character switching describe one tested path through the named episodes. They should not be read as a claim that every alternate path is invalid.

If your game accepts an action earlier than the guide does, continue from the resulting state rather than forcing the archived order. If a listed action fails, confirm the prerequisite conversation, hotspot inspection or inventory combination first. The guide is most useful as a set of triggers and ideas, not as a reason to stop experimenting.

Platform history and practical expectations

Version or record Date stated in the historical record What that means for this walkthrough
DOS release 1996 Part of the original-era PC history; the reproduced walkthrough is labeled for PC
Windows release 1996 The platform identified by the ESRB record and the matched PC solution
Macintosh release 1997 A later platform history entry, not evidence that the PC walkthrough’s controls or files are interchangeable

These dates distinguish the historical editions; they do not establish current compatibility, patches or official support. If you are preserving an original copy, keep the disc, manual and any installation notes together. If you are using an archival setup, document which edition you have before assuming that a control or save behavior matches the Windows PC route.

Content rating

The ESRB lists the Windows PC game as Teen, with Comic Mischief and Mild Language descriptors. The rating is a content classification, not a measure of difficulty, technical quality or performance. Parents and players who need a quick content check should use those descriptors rather than infer a broader rating from the game’s comic presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Down in the Dumps the same as a later quest with that name?

No. This guide covers Philips Media’s 1996 point-and-click adventure for DOS/Windows-era PCs, not a newer quest or unrelated work.

Can I follow a different order from the archived walkthrough?

Yes. The reproduced solution presents one route and notes that more than one solution can work.

The Bottom Line

Explore every screen, inspect obscured hotspots, keep testing sensible inventory combinations and switch characters when an episode allows it. Use rope and cheese in The Blub, the Rat, combine collected objects around The Hypnotic Machine, follow dialogue-led route clues in The Abominable Robin Blub and change characters in The Bum. Those directions reflect one archived PC solution, not the only possible path.
