Most standard USB, wireless and Bluetooth mice do not need a separate download in Windows 7. Windows uses its built-in Human Interface Device (HID) drivers, including MOUHID.sys and MOUCLASS.sys. If the pointer is missing, intermittent or shown as an unknown device, the reliable solution is to restore the connection, repair the device entry in Device Manager, run Windows Update, and only then obtain a package that exactly matches the mouse model and Hardware Id.
This guide shows where to get the correct driver, how to reinstall it, how to distinguish a driver problem from a battery or receiver problem, and how to avoid unsafe download sites.

Does Windows 7 already include a mouse driver?
Yes, for a mouse that follows the supported HID usages and top-level collections. Microsoft identifies MOUHID.sys as the HID client mapper and MOUCLASS.sys as the mouse class driver. Microsoft’s HID documentation says vendor drivers are not required for compliant keyboards and mice. That means a normal two- or three-button mouse should work as soon as Windows detects its USB receiver, cable or Bluetooth connection.
A manufacturer download can still be useful for a gaming mouse or another model with extra buttons, lighting, macro storage, DPI switching or a proprietary wireless receiver. Those packages are usually optional feature software rather than the basic pointer driver. A missing pointer should first be treated as a detection or connection problem, not as proof that a special download is required.

First check: connection, power and the right port
Before changing drivers, eliminate the physical causes that produce the same symptoms.
- For a wired USB mouse, unplug it, wait a few seconds and connect it directly to a different USB port on the computer. Avoid a hub, monitor port or docking station while testing.
- For a wireless mouse, replace or recharge the batteries, switch the mouse on, reseat the receiver and test the receiver in another USB port. Keep the receiver close to the mouse during pairing.
- For a Bluetooth mouse, turn Bluetooth on, place the mouse in pairing mode and remove an old, duplicated entry before pairing it again.
- Test the mouse on another computer if possible. If it fails there too, a cable, switch, receiver or battery is more likely than a Windows driver.
- Use the keyboard to navigate if the pointer is unavailable. Press
Windows, typedevmgmt.msc, and pressEnterto open Device Manager.
Reinstall the Windows 7 mouse entry in Device Manager
Device Manager is the safest first repair because it uses the driver already supplied by Windows or a package you have obtained from an official source.
- Open Start, right-click Computer, choose Manage, and select Device Manager. You can also press
Windows+R, enterdevmgmt.msc, and pressEnter. - Expand Mice and other pointing devices. A normal entry may be named HID-compliant mouse. If Windows cannot identify it, inspect Human Interface Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers and Other devices for an unknown device or a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the mouse entry and choose Update Driver Software. Select Search automatically for updated driver software. Let Windows search its local driver store and the configured update service.
- If updating does not help, right-click the same entry and choose Uninstall. Confirm the removal, disconnect the mouse if Windows asks, restart the computer, and reconnect the mouse after Windows loads. Windows should redetect a standard HID mouse and rebuild the entry.
- Open the device’s Properties and check Device status. Copy the exact error text if one is shown. Codes such as “Code 10” or “Code 28” point to different follow-up actions, so do not guess at a package based only on the words “HID mouse.”
Microsoft’s supported repair routes are Windows Update, Device Manager, reinstalling the device and contacting the device manufacturer when the problem continues.

Use Windows Update before downloading a package manually
Windows Update may supply a compatible HID or USB component without requiring you to identify a file yourself.
- Open Control Panel and choose System and Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates. Install relevant hardware or optional driver updates, following any restart request.
- Return to Device Manager and test the mouse after the restart. If the update history shows a failed hardware update, record its name and error code before trying another source.
Do not assume that every item labelled “HID” is a mouse driver. HID also covers touchpads, keyboards, game controllers and other input devices. Install only an update that corresponds to the affected hardware.
Find the exact driver when Windows cannot identify the mouse
If the device remains unknown, identify it before searching. A model name alone may not distinguish several revisions of the same product.

- In Device Manager, right-click the unknown or problem device and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab. In the Property menu, choose Hardware Ids.
- Copy the first value, which commonly contains a vendor identifier (
VID) and product identifier (PID) for USB hardware. Keep the complete string, including revision information if present. - Write down whether Windows 7 is 32-bit or 64-bit. Open Control Panel > System and Security > System and read System type.
- Search the computer manufacturer’s or mouse manufacturer’s official support page using the exact model, Windows 7 edition and architecture. Prefer a package whose release notes list the same model or hardware ID.
For a desktop supplied by a computer maker, the computer maker’s support page may provide the USB chipset or Bluetooth package that the mouse depends on. For a retail mouse, use the mouse maker’s support page. Avoid substituting a touchpad, chipset or keyboard package simply because its filename contains “HID.”

The Microsoft Update Catalog contains hardware packages tied to particular products and hardware IDs; it is not a single universal “Windows 7 mouse driver.” Search with the exact Hardware Id and compare every field before downloading.
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Hardware ID or supported product | Prevents installing a package for a different HID device or revision. |
| Windows 7 architecture | A 32-bit package cannot be treated as interchangeable with a 64-bit package. |
| Driver version and release date | Helps you distinguish similarly named entries and document what was installed. |
| Package type | A base driver may restore detection, while optional software may only add buttons or profiles. |
| Official catalog source | Reduces the risk of bundled installers and modified files. |
Historical catalog examples include a Microsoft HIDClass driver update, version 9.9.114.0, dated November 6, 2015, and a Microsoft Hardware USB Mouse Driver, version 9.9.108.0, dated October 27, 2015. These are examples of catalog records, not universal recommendations. Install neither unless its supported product, architecture and hardware ID match your device.

When a download is unnecessary—or only partly useful
Standard wired USB mouse
The built-in HID stack normally supplies the pointer, buttons and wheel. A vendor utility might add sensitivity profiles, but it should not be required merely to move the pointer.
Wireless mouse with a USB receiver
Windows may show the receiver as a HID-compliant mouse even when the mouse and receiver use proprietary radio pairing. If the receiver is not detected, reinstalling a mouse driver will not repair a dead receiver, an unpaired mouse or a flat battery. Follow the manufacturer’s pairing procedure and test another port.

Bluetooth mouse
Bluetooth depends on the computer’s Bluetooth adapter and its Windows 7 driver as well as the mouse’s HID profile. If other Bluetooth devices also fail, investigate the adapter driver and Bluetooth service instead of downloading a mouse package at random.

Gaming or programmable mouse
The basic pointer can work with the Microsoft HID driver while macros, extra buttons or lighting remain unavailable. Install the manufacturer’s Windows 7 utility only when the model’s support page lists Windows 7 and the correct 32-bit or 64-bit build.
Common failures and the next action
“No mouse appears in Device Manager”
Reconnect the device directly, inspect USB power, replace batteries, test another port and check whether the receiver appears under USB controllers. If it is absent on another computer, suspect the hardware. If it appears only as an unknown device, capture its Hardware Id before searching.
The mouse works until every restart
In Device Manager, uninstall the problem entry, restart and allow Windows to redetect it. If the issue returns, check Windows Update history, the computer maker’s chipset or USB support package and any recently installed software that changes input-device behavior.
The pointer moves, but special buttons do not
This is usually a feature-software or configuration issue, not a missing base mouse driver. Confirm that the manufacturer offers a Windows 7 utility for the exact model. Do not replace a working HID driver with an unrelated package.
Device Manager reports a code
Record the complete code and status text. “Code 28” generally indicates that Windows has no driver installed for that device; “Code 10” indicates that the device cannot start. The Hardware Id, architecture and manufacturer support instructions are needed to choose the next package safely.
The downloaded file will not install
Stop if the installer names a different model, architecture or operating system. Delete the file if its source is unclear, return to the official support page or Microsoft Update Catalog, and use Device Manager’s Have Disk option only when the manufacturer supplies an INF-based package and installation instructions.
Quick Recap
How to avoid unsafe driver downloads
- Use Windows Update, Device Manager, the computer manufacturer or the mouse manufacturer first.
- Do not use search-result pages that repackage drivers, require an unrelated downloader or offer several “matching” files without showing a hardware ID.
- Do not disable security software or Windows protections to force an installer to run.
- Check the digital signature and publisher shown in the file’s Properties when a package is supplied as an executable.
- Create a restore point before installing an optional vendor utility or a manually selected package, and keep the original driver or restore option available.
- Never install a driver solely because its version number is newer. Compatibility and an exact model or hardware-ID match are more important than the date.
A practical decision table
| Symptom | Most useful first action | Download decision |
|---|---|---|
| Pointer works with a basic mouse | Keep the built-in HID driver. | No separate driver needed. |
| Device is unknown with a yellow icon | Copy Hardware Ids and check Device Manager or Windows Update. | Download only an exact official match. |
| Wireless receiver is absent | Check batteries, pairing and another USB port. | A mouse driver will not fix a failed receiver. |
| Pointer works but macros or lighting do not | Check the model’s optional utility. | Install only a Windows 7-compatible feature package. |
| Several Bluetooth devices fail | Investigate the Bluetooth adapter and its driver. | Do not treat it as a mouse-only download. |
Optional shortcut
As an optional shortcut, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices, identify outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show the current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It supports Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7. A 2-day free trial does not require a credit card, followed by a subscription; results vary, and no tool repairs every hardware or driver problem.
