RPCS3 is a free, open-source PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger. Get the current build from the official RPCS3 project site or its official repository, then follow the project’s Quickstart guide. The “0.0.40” in some download titles should not be assumed to be the latest version: check the official channel for the current release.
What you download—and what you still need
The RPCS3 project describes its software as a free, open-source PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger written in C++ for Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD. The emulator is only one part of setup: it does not mean you have PlayStation 3 system software or game files.

- RPCS3: The emulator itself. Download it from an official project channel, not an unofficial “free download” mirror.
- PS3 system software: Firmware is separate. Sony’s PS3 system software support page is the official source. Sony’s page accessed October 8, 2026, lists version 4.93 and says the PC update route requires at least 200 MB free on removable media. Sony advises users to update their PS3 system to the latest version.
- Games: RPCS3 does not include games. Use only game files you are legally entitled to use; this article does not direct readers to unauthorized game downloads.
The exact current firmware installation procedure for RPCS3 is not established here. Use the project’s current Quickstart guide for emulator setup rather than relying on old instructions.
How to get the current RPCS3 build
- Open the official RPCS3 project site or the RPCS3 GitHub repository.
- Choose the download or release offered through that official channel for your operating system. The release number can change; verify it there instead of treating “0.0.40” as current.
- Follow the current Quickstart guide for prerequisites and installation. The project README also points Windows users to information about the Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable.
- Obtain PS3 system software from Sony’s support page, then follow the current RPCS3 setup guidance for using it with the emulator.
Check whether your game is likely to work
Compatibility varies by game, so check RPCS3’s compatibility list for the exact title before troubleshooting performance. Where available, match the game ID or region as well as the name. The project says the list changes frequently, so recheck it rather than relying on an old status or a general claim that PS3 games work.

RPCS3 defines Playable as a game that can be completed with playable performance and without game-breaking glitches. Other statuses indicate meaningful limitations, such as serious glitches or performance that is not sufficient for completion. A status is a guide, not a promise that every system or configuration will behave identically.

Use the requirements in the current Quickstart guide for the build you download. The project FAQ was edited April 29, 2020, and its historical minimum list named an x64 CPU, a 64-bit operating system, and an OpenGL 4.3-capable graphics card; it recommended a modern Vulkan-capable graphics card. Those dated specifications are not verified requirements for the current build.

A controller is optional; it is not required to download or run the emulator. The same 2020 FAQ described support for up to seven concurrent controllers and mixed input types, but that dated note does not verify compatibility for any currently sold model. Check RPCS3’s current documentation and your operating system’s support before choosing a specific controller.
