If Windows says it is missing, the safest first fix is to enable Legacy Components → DirectPlay, then restart and launch the affected game or program again.
The filename describes a “Modem and Serial Connection For DirectPlay” provider. It is associated with Microsoft’s old DirectPlay networking layer and is a 32-bit component. Although historical metadata identifies it with Microsoft DirectX for Windows 95, current Windows versions obtain DirectPlay as an optional legacy Windows feature rather than as a standalone DLL download.

What the dpmodemx.dll error means
You may see one of these common messages:
- “The program can’t start because dpmodemx.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting dpmodemx.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading dpmodemx.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because dpmodemx.dll was not found.”
- “dpmodemx.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all prove that the named file alone is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing or that the application is unable to load the correct 32-bit component.
The file is not normally a modern modem driver. It is a DirectPlay provider for legacy modem and serial networking. DirectPlay itself is a Windows compatibility component used by older games and applications, including programs released long before Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Fix 1: Enable DirectPlay in Windows Features
Time needed: 5–10 minutes, plus a restart
This is the most likely fix when an old game or program requests dpmodemx.dll.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- In the Windows Features window, find Legacy Components.
- Expand Legacy Components.
- Check DirectPlay.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to download or install the required component.
- Restart the computer.
- Launch the affected program again.
Microsoft documents DirectPlay as an on-demand legacy component in Windows components installed on demand.
If the game starts after the restart, the problem was probably a disabled or uninstalled DirectPlay feature. Do not copy a replacement DLL into the game directory after this point.

Try the feature window again after installing pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Open Windows Features again with
optionalfeatures. - Check Legacy Components → DirectPlay.
A custom, stripped, or damaged Windows image may not contain the feature payload. In that situation, Windows may need repair before it can install DirectPlay.
Fix 2: Repair the affected game or application
Time needed: 5–30 minutes
If DirectPlay is enabled but the same error remains, the program installation may be incomplete. This is especially likely if the error started after moving the game, restoring a backup, changing launchers, or interrupting an installation.
Steam, GOG, or another launcher
Look for an option named Verify integrity, Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair in the game’s installation or management menu. The exact wording depends on the launcher.

After verification:
- Restart Windows.
- Run the game again.
- Install any prerequisite package supplied with that game.
- Apply the publisher’s patch if the game has one.
- Test the game from its normal launcher rather than a manually copied executable.
A standalone installer
If the application has no repair option:
- Back up saved games and configuration files.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original publisher, your purchased installation media, or the launcher that supplied it.
- Enable DirectPlay before testing the newly installed copy.
Reinstalling the program is the definitive fix when its own files, launcher, or bundled prerequisites are damaged. Installing dpmodemx.dll separately does not reconstruct those missing pieces.
Fix 3: Repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use this step when DirectPlay will not install, the feature repeatedly disappears, or Windows reports that it cannot complete the requested changes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies.

- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run SFC separately:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Open
optionalfeaturesagain. - Enable Legacy Components → DirectPlay.
- Test the affected program.
Microsoft’s instructions for repairing a Windows image are available in the DISM documentation, and the System File Checker documentation explains what sfc /scannow does.
If DISM or SFC reports that it repaired files, restart before testing. If either command reports that it could not repair everything, run Windows Update, restart, and repeat the repair process.
Manually running SFC and DISM can mean hunting through logs and repeating repairs without knowing which component changed. Use the Windows feature troubleshooter path first
You may see command-line instructions for enabling DirectPlay. On supported systems, these commands are commonly used:
DISM.exe /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:LegacyComponents /All
DISM.exe /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:DirectPlay /All
Run them from an elevated Command Prompt, one at a time. Feature names and availability can vary by Windows edition, image, and release, so the graphical Windows Features window is preferable.
If DISM returns 0x800F080C, says that the feature name is unknown, or reports that a parent feature is missing:
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the graphical feature installation.
- Review
C:WindowsLogsDISMdism.log. - Review
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log.
Do not respond to a feature-installation error by downloading a loose DLL.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Windows Security may have quarantined a DirectPlay file or a file belonging to the game. Do not disable antivirus protection simply to make the error disappear.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection associated with the affected program.
- Check its path and publisher information.
Only restore a quarantined file when you can verify its provenance and digital signature. If the item is an unknown DLL from a game folder or download, leave it quarantined and reinstall the official Windows component or the application instead.

Microsoft describes quarantine and restore decisions in Protection history in the Windows Security app.
If Windows Security repeatedly removes the same legitimate application file, update the game from its official source and check whether the publisher provides a current compatibility patch. Do not add broad exclusions for an entire Downloads folder or system directory.

Fix 5: Account for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows
Time needed: 5 minutes
Public metadata identifies dpmodemx.dll as a 32-bit component. A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit programs through WoW64, but a 32-bit DLL cannot satisfy a native 64-bit dependency.
This creates several common mistakes:
- Copying a 32-bit DLL into a location used by a 64-bit application.
- Copying the same file into both
System32andSysWOW64. - Assuming the folder name tells you the architecture without understanding Windows redirection.
- Mixing a DLL from one Windows release with files from another.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is generally associated with 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit compatibility components. The exact location and version depend on the Windows release and how the optional component was installed.

To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
This tells you whether Windows itself is 64-bit, but it does not make a downloaded DLL safe or compatible.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair
Time needed: No repair time required
regsvr32 is used to register DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for restoring every missing DLL.
Running something like this is normally irrelevant for dpmodemx.dll:
regsvr32 dpmodemx.dll
If the file does not provide the required registration entry point, Windows may report that DllRegisterServer was not found. Even if registration succeeds for another DLL, it does not install missing DirectPlay features or repair the application that requested the file.

Fix 7: Update Windows and inspect failed servicing
Time needed: 15–60 minutes
A failed update or incomplete restart can prevent optional Windows components from installing.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Retry Legacy Components → DirectPlay.
If the feature still unchecks itself, run DISM and SFC as described earlier. Confirm that the Windows edition is not a modified image with optional features removed.

Fix 8: Check hardware and driver state only when the program needs it
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
dpmodemx.dll is not itself a modem driver, and updating a network or modem driver will not normally restore DirectPlay. However, an extremely old game may also depend on working audio, graphics, chipset, or network drivers.
Check Device Manager for unrelated hardware errors:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and Network adapters.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click a device and select Update driver.
- Prefer Search automatically for drivers, Windows Update, or the hardware manufacturer’s support page.
- Restart Windows after an installation.
Do not uninstall a working device merely because dpmodemx.dll is missing.

Random DLL download pages create several risks:
- The file may be modified or malicious.
- It may be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build.
- It may come from a different Windows release.
- It may have missing dependencies.
- It may not have a trustworthy digital signature.
- It may hide corruption in the Windows component store.
- It may not match the game’s launcher or other installed files.
Copying a file into System32, SysWOW64, or the game folder can also make later diagnosis harder. The safe sources are Windows Features, Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and the original publisher or launcher for the affected application.
The Microsoft DirectX End-User Runtime packages are also easy to misunderstand. Microsoft’s current DirectX packages target older libraries such as D3DX, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, and Managed DirectX. Microsoft states that the package does not modify the Windows DirectX runtime, so the DirectX Web Installer or DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010 should not be presented as guaranteed dpmodemx.dll installers.
What causes the error

The filename may mention a modem or serial connection, but that does not automatically indicate a modem hardware failure. DirectPlay can be requested by old networking code even when the program is being played locally or over a modern network.
If DirectPlay installs but the program still fails
At that point, dpmodemx.dll may only be the first visible error. Try these checks:
- Run the launcher’s file verification or repair process.
- Reinstall the program from its original source.
- Install the publisher’s patch.
- Right-click the program executable, select Properties, open Compatibility, and test an appropriate compatibility mode.
- Run the program once as administrator only if its documentation requires it.
- Check whether the application requires an old graphics, audio, copy-protection, or networking component.
- Test a supported remaster or updated launcher if one exists.
DirectPlay does not make every legacy game compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11. Some programs depend on obsolete installers, copy-protection drivers, 16-bit components, old graphics APIs, or assumptions that current Windows no longer supports.
Last-resort recovery options
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
If the error began immediately after a failed update, driver change, or system modification, System Restore may return Windows to a working state:

A clean reinstall should be the final option, not the first response to one missing compatibility DLL.
FAQ
Is dpmodemx.dll a virus?
The filename belongs to a genuine Microsoft DirectPlay component. That does not prove that every file carrying the name is authentic. Verify the file’s location, publisher, and digital signature, and prefer reinstalling DirectPlay through Windows Features.
Does Windows 11 include DirectPlay?
Windows treats DirectPlay as a legacy optional component installed on demand. Open Windows Features, expand Legacy Components, and enable DirectPlay if it is available.
Should I copy dpmodemx.dll into SysWOW64?
No. It is a 32-bit component, but manually copying it can produce an incorrect build, missing dependencies, or a file that does not match the installed Windows component. Enable DirectPlay instead.
