“dpserial.dll” missing, not found, or could not be loaded
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because dpserial.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “dpserial.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading dpserial.dll.”
- “dpserial.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The application or DLL is not a valid Windows image.”
- “The program was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b).”
The safest fix for a dpserial.dll error is usually to enable Windows’ legacy DirectPlay feature, then repair or reinstall the affected game or application. Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL from a random website.
What dpserial.dll is
dpserial.dll is associated with the older Microsoft DirectPlay networking stack. DirectPlay supported communication over TCP/IP, IPX, modem, and serial connections through separate service providers. Microsoft’s DirectPlay documentation describes this service-provider model in its DirectPlay 8 glossary and DirectPlay networking documentation.
Historical Windows 2000 and Windows XP records identify dpserial.dll as a 32-bit Microsoft DirectPlay component. Those records are useful for identifying the file, but they do not confirm that the same file, path, or version is part of every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
DirectPlay is now treated as an optional legacy Windows component. An old game may request it because its installer or executable expects DirectPlay files or registrations that are not enabled in a fresh Windows installation.

Causes and the most appropriate fix
| Likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|
| DirectPlay is disabled | Enable Legacy Components > DirectPlay |
| The application installation is incomplete | Verify, repair, or reinstall the application |
| Antivirus removed a file | Check Protection history and scan the system |
| Other legacy DirectX files are missing | Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX runtime |
| Windows component files are damaged | Run DISM, then SFC |
| A manually copied DLL is incompatible | Remove it and restore the application |
| The program is too old for current Windows | Use compatibility settings, System Restore, or vendor support |
Work through the fixes in this order. Restart and test the program after each major step.
Fix 1: Enable DirectPlay in Windows Features
This is the best first fix when an old game or application reports dpserial.dll on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- In the Windows Features window, find Legacy Components.
- Select the box beside Legacy Components to expand it.
- Select DirectPlay.
- Click OK.
- Allow Windows to install the feature.
- Restart the computer.
- Launch the affected program again.
Microsoft documents legacy Windows components and their on-demand installation in its Windows compatibility guidance.

Enabling DirectPlay supplies the compatibility feature that old software expects. It does not guarantee that every historical DirectPlay filename will be recreated in the same location as it appeared on Windows XP.
If DirectPlay is not listed
Open Settings > Windows Update and install available updates. Restart, then check Windows Features again.
You can also try the following command from an elevated terminal:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:DirectPlay /All
- Restart Windows when the command finishes.
- Test the application.
If DISM reports 0x800f080c or says that the feature name was not recognized, stop repeating the command. The Windows image may not expose that feature under this name, or the component store may need repair. Return to Windows Features after repairing Windows components with the steps below.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
The file may be missing from the program’s own installation. This is especially likely when the error started immediately after installing the application, moving its folder, restoring a backup, or seeing an antivirus quarantine notification.
Use the application’s repair option
If the program appears in Windows’ installed-app list:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application and test it.
Some game launchers provide their own commands named Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair. Run that command from the launcher rather than copying a DLL into the game folder.

If repair is unavailable:
- Back up saved games or application data if needed.
- Uninstall the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original developer, legitimate store, or original installation media.
- Apply the program’s official updates.
- Enable DirectPlay again if the installer requires it.
- Test the program before adding unofficial modifications.
Because dpserial.dll is tied to an old application environment, reinstalling that application is often more effective than attempting to repair the file separately.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined a file after detecting corruption or suspicious behavior.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the affected application or
dpserial.dll. - Check the file path, publisher, and detection details.
- Restore it only if you recognize the application and trust its original source.
- Run a Full scan afterward.
- Reinstall the application if the file was removed from an untrusted or modified package.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to install a DLL downloaded from an unknown source. A replacement can be malicious, unsigned, damaged, or built for a different application.
If several unrelated programs begin reporting DLL failures, scan for malware and consider recent software installations, system changes, or disk problems instead of treating each DLL separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 4: Install legacy DirectX components only when needed
DirectPlay and DirectX are related legacy technologies, but they are not interchangeable.
Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX runtime when the application also reports missing files such as d3dx9_*.dll, xinput1_3.dll, or older XAudio components. Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer installs legacy side-by-side libraries without replacing the DirectX version built into Windows.
For an offline installation, use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010 package.
Neither Microsoft package specifically promises to restore the historical dpserial.dll. DirectX 12 being installed also does not provide every older side-by-side DirectX library. If dpserial.dll is the only reported problem, enable DirectPlay and repair the application first.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows Features fails, DirectPlay disappears after reboot, or multiple protected Windows components appear damaged.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin).
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test DirectPlay and the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses to replace damaged protected files. See Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM repair instructions.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or could not repair some files. If it cannot repair everything, do not respond by downloading more DLLs. Install pending Windows updates, restart, run the commands once more if appropriate, and consider an in-place Windows repair if component failures continue.
When the manual DISM and SFC process leaves you guessing which component changed or whether another repair is pending, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show the reported problems; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the missing file.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Historical records for dpserial.dll describe a 32-bit component. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run many 32-bit applications, but the application still needs a compatible DLL and compatible supporting files.
Keep these rules in mind:
- Do not assume a DLL belongs in a particular folder because its name appears in an online file listing.
- Do not install both 32-bit and 64-bit copies at random.
- Do not replace a file in
System32orSysWOW64unless a trusted installer or Microsoft repair process requires it. - A “not designed to run on Windows” message often indicates a wrong, corrupted, truncated, or incompatible file rather than a simple missing-file problem.
If you already copied dpserial.dll manually, remove that copy if it came from an unverified source. Then repair or reinstall the application and run DISM and SFC.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the symptom points to hardware
A DirectPlay service-provider error is not normally a graphics or device-driver problem. Do not update every driver simply because a DLL error appeared.
Driver work is appropriate when the application also crashes with display, sound, network, modem, or controller errors:

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program.
Prefer drivers from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which installed drivers are reported as outdated, while its full version handles the driver installation; it is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that requires dpserial.dll.
Should you run regsvr32 dpserial.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point. Microsoft documents its purpose in the regsvr32 command reference.

There is no verified evidence that the historical dpserial.dll is a self-registering COM DLL. DirectPlay service providers are loaded as networking components, so registration is not the normal repair method.
If you run:
regsvr32 dpserial.dll
and receive an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found, that does not prove the file is corrupt. It usually means regsvr32 is the wrong tool for that DLL.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites and manually copied replacements. The file may be:
- The wrong historical build
- Intended for a different application
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Modified or unsigned
- Bundled with malware
- Unable to load because another dependency is missing
Use Windows Features, the affected program’s repair or verification function, Microsoft’s official DirectX packages when relevant, and Windows repair commands instead. A manually copied DLL should be an exceptional recovery step using a verified file from matching installation media, not the normal solution.
If the error says “not a valid Windows image”
Treat this differently from a simple missing-file message.
- Uninstall or remove the manually copied DLL.
- Run the application launcher’s repair or verification command.
- Reinstall the program from its original source.
- Run DISM followed by SFC.
- Restart and test again.
This wording commonly points to an incompatible, corrupted, or truncated DLL. Do not keep replacing files until the message changes.

If nothing works
If DirectPlay, application repair, legacy DirectX installation where appropriate, and Windows repair do not solve the problem:
- Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- Test a clean installation of the application.
- Check whether the program has documented compatibility requirements.
- Try the application’s Properties > Compatibility settings.
- Contact the application vendor if the software is still supported.
- Consider an in-place Windows repair when Windows component failures affect multiple programs.
Very old software may not run reliably on current Windows even after its legacy feature is enabled.
FAQ
Is dpserial.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. Historical Windows records associate it with Microsoft DirectPlay. Its exact current presence, package membership, and Windows 10 or Windows 11 path are not verified as universal.
Is dpserial.dll a modem DLL or a serial DLL?
Historical metadata commonly describes it as a Microsoft DirectPlay Modem Service Provider. Microsoft’s DirectPlay documentation distinguishes modem and serial service providers, so it should not be described as exclusively one or the other.
Does enabling DirectPlay always restore dpserial.dll?
No. It enables the legacy compatibility feature, but it does not guarantee that the historical file will appear at the same path or that an application installation will be repaired. Repair or reinstall the affected program as well.
Will the June 2010 DirectX runtime fix it?
Only if the application also needs legacy DirectX side-by-side libraries. It is not a guaranteed dpserial.dll repair.
Can SFC repair dpserial.dll?
SFC can repair protected files that belong to the current Windows component store. It may not restore a historical DirectPlay file that is supplied by an application or is not part of the current Windows image.
Is the error caused by a missing device driver?
Usually not. Start with DirectPlay and application repair. Use Device Manager only when the symptoms also indicate a display, sound, network, modem, or controller problem.
