Adventure most likely means Dr. Brain Thinking Games: IQ Adventure, the 1998 Knowledge Adventure puzzle-adventure for Windows. You play a test subject stranded in another universe, evade pursuing robots, solve fifteen described missions, and collect the parts needed to rebuild an interstellar transporter. There is no verified, complete route that can safely be applied to every copy: the lead programmer says maps could vary and that puzzles and quizzes were rule-based. This guide therefore gives you a reliable way to identify the game, solve missions, record clues, and use any route-specific walkthrough without confusing it with the earlier Castle or Island of Dr. Brain games.
Identify the game before following any walkthrough
The shortened wording in searches can point to several Dr. Brain products. The title documented for the game in this guide is Dr. Brain Thinking Games: IQ Adventure (also styled “I.Q. Adventure” in some references). It is a commercial Windows game associated with Knowledge Adventure and released in 1998. Catalog records list both CD-ROM and downloadable media for the Windows release.

This is not The Castle of Dr. Brain and not The Island of Dr. Brain. Those are earlier Sierra adventures with their own manuals, hint systems, controls, and puzzle answers. A walkthrough headed “Island of Dr. Brain” cannot be used as an IQ Adventure solution simply because both titles contain “Dr. Brain.” Check the exact title on your box, disc, installer, or opening screen before accepting any answer.

What a dependable walkthrough can—and cannot—tell you
A complete, reliable written walkthrough for IQ Adventure was not established. The surviving official-style indexes and the readily located Sierra Chest walkthrough concern the earlier Island of Dr. Brain; their hint-watch rules, point deductions, and puzzle solutions do not document IQ Adventure. Repeating those instructions here would send you down the wrong path.
There is a good reason fixed answer lists can fail. Jim Winstead Jr., the game’s lead programmer, recalls that the team could generate map variations and that puzzles and quizzes were rule-based. In his April 18, 2024 recollection, he described it this way: “IQ Adventure is a third-person isometric puzzle/adventure game which was written in C++, and we used the networking and graphics library from Blizzard Entertainment (another corporate sibling).” A map branch, clue placement, or rule set can therefore differ between playthroughs even when the mission goal is familiar.
Use a route-specific answer only when it names your mission, identifies the same puzzle presentation, and explains how to recognize a variation. When those details are absent, a solving method is safer than copying a sequence of moves.

Prepare a run so clues and variations do not cost you time
Confirm your edition and starting state
- Write down the exact title as shown by the game, not just the filename or a seller’s shorthand.
- Note whether you are using a physical CD-ROM or a downloaded release. Catalogs document both media, but that does not prove that a particular modern copy will run on your current Windows setup.
- If the game exposes a save command, keep a save before entering an unfamiliar area or committing to a puzzle answer. Use separate saves for major discoveries so you can test a deduction without losing your route.
Keep a mission log
For each mission, record the stated objective, every named location, objects that can be examined, and any rule a character or screen explains. Mark a clue as “observed,” “inferred,” or “confirmed.” This prevents an attractive guess from becoming a false fact when the game presents a map variation.
Map the isometric space
Isometric scenes can hide a passage behind foreground scenery or make two paths look similar. Sketch a simple map with entrances, exits, non-player characters, puzzle stations, transporter-part locations, and places where robots interrupt movement. Add a symbol when an area has been cleared. Your map remains useful even if the next playthrough shuffles particular connections.
A mission-by-mission solving procedure
- Restate the win condition. Put the mission’s requested outcome in one sentence: find an item, establish a sequence, identify a fact, or complete a mechanism. Do not begin by guessing an answer from a generic IQ puzzle list.
- Collect all available evidence. Talk to friendly molemen and inspect objects before solving. Record exact wording, numbers, symbols, colors, and ordering language. If a clue is presented as a quiz, copy the question and every answer choice.
- Separate access problems from logic problems. If you cannot reach a location, search for an unexplored route, an interaction, or a required transporter component before assuming the puzzle answer is wrong. If the interface accepts input but rejects it, treat that as a logic or rule issue.
- Classify the puzzle. Decide whether it is primarily a pattern, sequence, deduction, fact-gathering, conclusion, or logical-analysis task. The classification tells you what evidence matters and stops you from applying a pattern trick to a deduction puzzle.
- Write the rule in plain language. For example, describe what changes from one item to the next, which statements can coexist, or what condition unlocks an action. Test the rule against every clue, not just the two that made it look plausible.
- Make the smallest test. Try the least irreversible interaction first. If the game allows resetting a panel or revisiting a station, use that opportunity to test one variable at a time. Record the result rather than relying on memory.
- Verify before moving on. A successful animation or message is stronger evidence than a guess that merely advances you. Note which transporter part, route, or mission marker changed so you can distinguish progress from a side interaction.
- Update your map and log. Mark solved stations, consumed items, newly opened paths, and any robot encounter that changes your available route. If a later puzzle refers back to an earlier clue, your notes become the authoritative record for this run.

Patterns and sequences
List the visible elements in order and compare more than one feature: shape, color, count, direction, spacing, or position. Check whether the change alternates or repeats in a cycle before assuming a simple addition or subtraction. A valid rule must account for every shown term and produce one unambiguous next term or missing element.

Deductive reasoning
Translate each statement into a short condition. Mark combinations that cannot coexist, then eliminate them from the remaining possibilities. “At least,” “exactly,” and “only if” have different meanings; copy the game’s wording instead of paraphrasing it loosely. If two arrangements remain, look for a clue you have not yet collected rather than guessing.
Gathering facts and drawing conclusions
Some missions are designed around collecting information from the environment or characters and then applying it. Keep facts separate from conclusions in your notes. When an answer is rejected, revisit the source clue and check whether you inferred a relationship the game never stated.
Logical analysis and quizzes
For a quiz, write every option down and identify what the question is actually asking: a definition, an order, a cause, or an exception. Eliminate choices that contradict a recorded rule. Do not import a trivia answer from an external guide unless the guide names the same IQ Adventure question and edition; a generic Dr. Brain answer list may belong to another title.

A practical hint ladder when you are stuck
- Observation hint: Re-examine the current screen, objects, and character dialogue. Many apparent dead ends are unrecorded clues or an overlooked exit.
- Structure hint: Identify the puzzle family and list its variables. Drawing a table or a small diagram often exposes the rule without revealing an answer.
- Contradiction check: Test your proposed rule against the clue that fits least well. If it fails there, discard it rather than adding exceptions.
- Route check: Compare your map with the mission objective. You may be solving a station that belongs to a later objective or searching an area that the current variation does not use.
- External hint: Use a guide only after recording your own clues. Confirm its exact title, mission, puzzle image or wording, edition, and whether it warns about generated variations.
This ladder preserves the reasoning the game is built to exercise while limiting spoilers. It also gives you evidence to report if an answer guide conflicts with your copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to evaluate an online walkthrough
- Title check: It must say Dr. Brain Thinking Games: IQ Adventure, not Castle or Island.
- Platform and edition: The guide should identify Windows and, where relevant, whether it covers a CD-ROM or downloaded release.
- Mission labeling: A useful entry names the mission and objective, not merely “level 4.”
- Variation warning: Prefer instructions that explain the rule or recognition test. A bare string of moves is fragile when maps or rule-based quizzes differ.
- Evidence: Screenshots, reproduced question wording, or clearly described landmarks let you compare the guide with your screen.
If a page discusses hint watches, point costs, or controls identified as belonging to the Sierra games, stop: it is not an IQ Adventure walkthrough. No current remake or directly comparable edition has been established, so a page claiming universal modern instructions deserves especially careful verification.
Finding a physical copy without assuming present-day availability
A PC CD-ROM copy is a legitimate search path because catalogs record the game on that medium. The precise query Dr. Brain Thinking Games IQ Adventure PC CD-ROM helps distinguish it from the similarly named Sierra titles. Treat listings as vintage-product offers, not proof of stock or compatibility.

Before buying, ask the seller to confirm the exact title, disc condition, manuals or inserts included, and whether the item is the Windows release. A reseller description can establish what that seller claims to have, but inventory, contents, and working condition are volatile. Neither a historical catalog entry nor a listing guarantees that the disc will run on your present computer.
Troubleshooting common walkthrough failures
The listed answer is rejected
Check the mission name and puzzle wording first. Then compare the guide’s symbols, order, and available choices with your screen. If they differ, assume a generated variation or edition difference and solve from your recorded rule instead of forcing the published answer.
You cannot find the transporter part
Return to the mission objective and your map. Confirm that every accessible character has been questioned and every marked interaction has been tested. A part described in a guide may belong to another route branch; use landmarks and objective text, not a coordinate copied from a different map.
Recommended Free Tools
Robots interrupt your route
Record where the interruption occurs and whether another path remains open. Re-plan from the nearest safe point on your map, prioritizing the objective and unsolved access conditions. Do not assume a robot encounter proves that a puzzle has been failed; it may simply define the route pressure in that section.
The guide’s controls do not match
Stop and verify the title, platform, and edition. Control instructions from Island or Castle of Dr. Brain are not evidence for IQ Adventure. Use the commands displayed by your own copy and record any differences before continuing.
Bottom line for a first playthrough
Approach Dr. Brain Thinking Games: IQ Adventure as a fifteen-mission, isometric puzzle adventure whose exact map and rule presentation may vary. Identify the game, maintain a mission log, map each branch, and solve from verified clues. A route that explains its assumptions is more trustworthy than a confident answer list, and no earlier Sierra Dr. Brain walkthrough should be substituted for this 1998 Windows title.
