Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age: Inquisition Is Now Playable on Steam Deck After a Proton Controller Fix

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is currently rated Playable on Steam Deck, and Valve’s Proton Experimental changelog lists a fix for the game’s controller input. Playable is not the same as Verified: the game listing still flags small text, occasional mismatched controller icons, and the need to open the on-screen keyboard manually for text entry.

What changed with Dragon Age: Inquisition on Steam Deck?

Valve’s Proton Experimental changelog lists “Fixed controllers not working in Dragon Age: Inquisition” among changes available as of September 25, 2026. Separately, SteamDB records the game’s compatibility test on September 14, 2026, and lists its current category as Playable. Steam Deck HQ reported that the controller fix first appeared in Proton Experimental and that the compatibility category was later upgraded from Unsupported to Playable.

These are related developments, but they are separate records: the changelog documents the Proton fix, while SteamDB records the compatibility category and test date. The rating does not establish that every controller or setup behaves identically.

What does Playable mean?

Valve defines Playable as: “The game may require some manual tweaking by the user to play.” Examples include choosing a community controller configuration or using the touchscreen to navigate a launcher. Verified is a stricter category, assessing controller support and appropriate input icons, display and text legibility, seamless navigation, and Proton or middleware support. See Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility definitions.

8Bitdo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller for PC, Apple, Steam & Android, Black
  • TMR Joysticks - Offering higher sensitivity, greater precision, and enhanced durability.
  • 8BitDo Exclusive Wireless Technology - “8Speed”, it delivers an exceptionally stable 2.4G connection with ultra-low latency under 1ms. Engineered for rock-solid reliability, it features strong anti-interference and a 10m range with virtually no lag.
  • Trigger Mode Switch - Easily switch between linear Hall Effect triggers and non-linear tactile triggers for optimal control across different gaming scenarios.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection). Customizable 6-Axis Motion Control. Turbo function. Rumble vibration. Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2.
  • 2 Pro back paddle buttons, extra R4/L4 bumpers, and tactile bumpers & D-pad for enhanced control and faster response. Includes a multifunctional charging dock and USB-C adapter for seamless connectivity.

The game-specific listing says default graphics perform well, but it also identifies practical friction that is consistent with a Playable rating:

  • Some in-game text is small.
  • Controller prompts may sometimes show mouse, keyboard, or non-Deck controller icons.
  • Text entry may require manually opening the on-screen keyboard.

How to approach controller setup

The controller fix is a useful starting point, not a universal setup recipe. Community reports describe different outcomes depending on Proton version, controller layout, in-game input selection, and launcher behavior. Some users have reported success with newer GE-Proton versions after selecting controller input in the game; other reports discuss community layouts, custom Proton builds, or EA App launcher problems. Those reports are individual experiences, not controlled tests.

  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
  1. Start with the current Steam Deck compatibility listing. Check the game’s Steam Deck details for the current category and known caveats.
  2. Try the current Proton Experimental option if controller input is not recognized. Valve’s changelog lists a controller fix there, but the sources do not establish that every user must switch to Experimental or that the same setting is required on every system.
  3. Check the game’s input mode. If the game offers a choice between mouse-and-keyboard and gamepad controls, user reports suggest selecting gamepad can matter. The exact behavior may depend on the setup.
  4. Use a community controller layout only if needed. A community configuration may help with navigation or input, but it is not documented as a required step for all players.
  5. For text fields, open the on-screen keyboard manually. This is one of the game listing’s stated caveats.

Steam Deck HQ and ProtonDB community reports reflect varying experiences rather than a single verified procedure. In particular, older recommendations for custom Proton builds should not be treated as mandatory now that Valve’s Experimental changelog records a controller fix.

What to expect during play

The compatibility listing describes default graphics performance positively, but the available information does not provide controlled frame-rate, battery-life, or performance benchmarks. The practical expectation is therefore narrower: the game is categorized as Playable, with input, text-readability, icon, and text-entry caveats to bear in mind. Launcher behavior can also vary across setups, and community reports mention EA App issues.
