Dragon Age: The Veilguard offers six faction backgrounds for Rook. Your selection shapes Rook’s backstory and conversation options, so choose the group whose identity and roleplay premise interest you—not a supposed “best” faction. The official descriptions establish differences in theme, but do not rank factions by strength or amount of dialogue.
All six Dragon Age: The Veilguard backgrounds
Each background connects Rook to one of the game’s factions. These summaries follow EA’s official faction descriptions; the roleplay suggestions are ways to compare their premises, not claims about gameplay advantage.
| Background | Faction identity | Fits a roleplay premise centered on… |
|---|---|---|
| Grey Wardens | An ancient order sworn to fight darkspawn and monsters. Its members undergo secret rites that grant supernatural powers. | Joining an order devoted to battling darkspawn and other monsters. |
| Veil Jumpers | Explorers of ancient elven ruins who welcome people brave enough to face the reality-warping magic of Arlathan. | Ancient elven sites, exploration, and dangerous magic. |
| Shadow Dragons | A resistance movement opposing corrupt rulers and slavery in Tevinter, determined to bring justice to its people. | Resistance and justice in Tevinter. |
| Lords of Fortune | Rivaini explorers, hunters, and treasure-seekers known for daring exploits and narrow escapes. | Treasure hunting and high-risk adventure. |
| The Mourn Watch | An elite necromantic order that tends Nevarra’s sprawling Grand Necropolis, where the undead walk and spirits dwell. | Necromancy and the eerie setting of Nevarra’s Grand Necropolis. |
| Antivan Crows | Assassins portrayed as swift knives in the dark and as Antiva’s shadowy protectors. | An assassin identity tied to Antiva. |
What choosing a background changes
EA says a faction choice influences Rook’s backstory and conversation options, and can potentially affect the balance of power on the divided continent. PlayStation’s September 2024 hands-on report likewise describes faction selection as affecting Rook’s unique backstory and future dialogue choices. It is a narrative choice, not merely a cosmetic label.
The official material reviewed does not give dialogue totals, quantify how much unique content each faction receives, or identify a mechanically strongest choice. Compare the factions by their purpose, setting, and the kind of character you want to play rather than treating an unsupported ranking as fact.

Faction is separate from lineage and combat class
Character creation includes separate selections for lineage, combat class, and faction, alongside Rook’s backstory. Picking a faction does not itself select Rook’s lineage or class. EA’s character creator is free to use, but it is not the full game; EA says the game must be purchased separately. An appearance made in the creator can be imported into the full game only on the same platform.

The factions also help place Rook and the companions in Thedas. PlayStation’s official game overview identifies Bellara as a Veil Jumper, Davrin as a Grey Warden, Emmrich as a Mourn Watch necromancer, Lucanis as an Antivan Crow, Neve as a Shadow Dragon, and Taash as a Lord of Fortune. It places the Veil Jumpers in Arlathan Forest, the Shadow Dragons in Minrathous, Grey Wardens defending the Hossberg Wetlands, and the Antivan Crows in Treviso. These are story-world connections, not additional character-creation requirements.

How to choose a background
- Start with the premise you want to inhabit. Choose among monster fighting, ruin exploration, resistance, treasure seeking, necromancy, or assassination.
- Consider the setting and faction identity. The official descriptions connect the options to places and causes including Arlathan, Tevinter, Rivain, Nevarra, and Antiva.
- Keep mechanics separate from roleplay. Select a background for its story and conversation possibilities; the cited official sources do not establish that one choice makes the game easier or gives more dialogue.
