For a gameplay-first choice, Shadow Dragons suit resource-focused Mages, Grey Wardens add durability for Warriors, and Veil Jumpers boost the critical and weakpoint damage favored by some Rogues. Your faction also shapes Rook’s backstory and dialogue, so let roleplay decide when bonuses do not settle it. The faction choice is reported to lock after character creation.
How to choose Rook’s faction
Compare four things: the faction’s gameplay bonus, how it fits your build, the backstory it gives Rook, and the dialogue identity you want. The bonuses below come from Windows Central’s guide published October 31, 2024, rather than an official ranking; treat them as starting points, not proof that one faction is best in every encounter.
Faction is not just a combat modifier. Electronic Arts says the choice influences Rook’s backstory and conversation options and may affect the balance of power. BioWare’s community team likewise says faction membership unlocks different narrative, dialogue, and gameplay interactions in Journal #1.
Best faction by class and build
BioWare identifies three classes: Warrior, Mage, and Rogue. These picks match the reported faction bonuses to common build priorities; a specialization or playstyle can change which bonus is most useful.

Mage
Shadow Dragons are a broad gameplay pick when you want class resource to generate faster. A close-range Spellblade may prefer the Grey Wardens’ added health and defense, or the Antivan Crows’ extra potion. For an affliction-focused Death Caller, the Mourn Watch’s additional affliction stack is a natural fit.
Rogue
Veil Jumpers suit Rogues built around critical hits and weakpoints, including a Veil Ranger or a critical-focused Duelist. A Saboteur that leans on takedowns may benefit more from the Lords of Fortune. For a melee Duelist seeking another survival option, consider the Crows’ extra potion.

What each faction is about
These identities, summarized by EA’s official faction page, can help you decide which Rook you want to inhabit when gameplay bonuses are close.
- Grey Wardens: An ancient order sworn to fight darkspawn and monsters; members undergo secret rites.
- Veil Jumpers: Explorers of ancient elven ruins who face Arlathan’s reality-warping magic.
- Shadow Dragons: A resistance against corrupt rulers and slavery in Tevinter.
- Lords of Fortune: Rivaini explorers, hunters, and treasure-seekers.
- The Mourn Watch: A necromantic order tending Nevarra’s Grand Necropolis.
- Antivan Crows: Assassins who serve as Antiva’s feared protectors.
When roleplay should outweigh the bonus
Pick the faction whose history and dialogue feel right for your Rook if its mechanical edge does not serve your build. The faction determines a fixed surname and premise for Rook’s past, so this decision affects the character you play as well as the way some conversations unfold. Windows Central reports that the choice is locked after character creation; decide before starting rather than assuming you can swap factions later.
