Dragon Age: The Veilguard Review: It Starts Slow, but Gets Stronger

The Veilguard’s opening is slow to click, but its action combat, companion stories and widening stakes make a stronger case as the adventure unfolds.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard took time to win me over. Its opening felt awkward and slow to establish its characters and stakes, but the experience grew more compelling as its action combat, companion stories and larger plot came into focus. That is my verdict, not a promise that every player will feel the same: the shift toward real-time action and the softer opening may remain sticking points for some longtime fans.

What is Dragon Age: The Veilguard?

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a single-player action RPG developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. It launched worldwide on October 31, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam, the EA app and the Epic Games Store. You play as Rook, leading a team of seven companions through an adventure in Thedas. EA’s game page outlines the game and its available platforms.

Does The Veilguard get better?

For me, yes—but the opening is a real hurdle. The early hours spend time introducing the threat, Rook and the cast, while dialogue and onboarding can make the game feel more awkward than involving. I initially wondered whether it would capture the sense of a sprawling Dragon Age adventure that I associate with Inquisition. The story gains momentum as its stakes widen, and the companions become more engaging as their personalities and personal arcs develop.

That impression is not a measured consensus or a guarantee about every player’s experience. The Verge’s review uses the framing “it starts slow, but strong,” while PC Gamer’s coverage likewise describes a weak early impression followed by improvement; one PC Gamer review also reports that the game eventually slows down over a 70-hour playthrough. Those are reviewers’ experiences, not a universal pacing rule. The Verge review, PC Gamer’s review and PC Gamer’s discussion of the early script and later character writing offer different angles on that arc.

  • Unite THE VEILGUARD - Unite a team of seven companions, each with rich lives and deep backstories. These are characters to befriend, and even fall in love with. Among them, an assassin, a necromancer, a detective, each and all bringing their own expertise and unique abilities to the fight. You are never alone, decide who to take into battle and together face down demons, dragons and corrupt gods.
  • BECOME THE LEADER OTHERS BELIEVE IN - Select from different races and combat classes, customize your appearance, choose your character’s backstory and begin your journey as Rook, Dragon Age’s newest hero. The choice is yours. Brace yourself, there are tough decisions to be made, allies to inspire, and a fight that needs every sword, staff and bow you can muster.

How does combat feel?

Combat is built around real-time action rather than the kind of tactical party control some returning players may want. EA and PlayStation describe a system centered on fast attacks, dodges, parries and companion abilities, selected through an ability wheel. In practice, that makes Rook’s movement and timing the center of a fight, with companions adding abilities to the mix rather than turning encounters into a pause-and-plan strategy exercise. PlayStation’s feature description details the action systems, and EA’s overview introduces the companions and their combat abilities.

The faster, more direct style suits players who want active encounters. It may frustrate players whose favorite part of earlier Dragon Age games was directing a party tactically. The difference is an important expectation to set before playing: this is an action-led entry, not simply a new story with the older combat approach intact. GameSpot’s review discusses the game’s combat and its place in the series.

Do the companions and story make the slow start worthwhile?

The seven-companion team is central to the game’s appeal. Each companion has a story as well as combat abilities, and the relationships and personal quests give the adventure more emotional texture as they develop. That payoff is one reason the opening’s introductions can feel worthwhile in retrospect: the cast has room to become more than a set of early-game explanations.

The story also has to carry the weight of Dragon Age’s history while welcoming players who may not know it. A newcomer can follow Rook’s immediate adventure, but familiarity with the series gives more context to the setting and the choices’ significance. The game’s tone and approach to that history may not deliver the political edge or atmosphere every returning fan expects. TIME’s review considers the story, companions and the game’s fit within the series.

Who should play it?

  • Good fit: Players who enjoy character-driven RPGs, a team with individual stories, and action combat built around dodging, parrying and ability use.
  • Proceed with expectations adjusted: Returning fans who are open to a more action-led combat system and a slower, less assured introduction before the story and companions gather force.
  • Possible mismatch: Players who specifically want tactical party control, or who dislike an awkward opening and a softer tone than they associate with earlier entries.
  • New to Dragon Age: You do not need to be a series expert to follow Rook’s story, though some setting and history will mean more if you already know Thedas.

Which platforms and performance modes are available?

EA lists PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC as platforms. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, EA says fidelity and performance modes target 30 and 60 FPS, respectively. These are developer-stated targets, not independent performance measurements or guaranteed results in every scene. BioWare’s PC and technical information also says the PC platform received 40% of its platform testing effort and that the developer conducted over 200,000 hours of performance and compatibility testing; both figures are BioWare’s own reports.
