Dragon Age: The Veilguard Introduces Taash’s Gender-Identity Storyline

Taash is a Qunari warrior companion whose story has been discussed as non-binary representation, but EA’s official guide does not explicitly apply that identity label or establish a franchise first.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard features Taash, a Qunari warrior companion whose story is discussed as non-binary representation. But the available official description does not explicitly label Taash as non-binary, and it does not establish that Taash is the franchise’s first non-binary companion.

Who is Taash in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?

Taash is a Qunari warrior and dragon hunter among the companions who travel with Rook in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. BioWare introduced the game as a character-driven RPG about exploring Thedas with companions while confronting ancient elven gods. Rook’s class, lineage, gender, appearance and faction are player choices; BioWare says faction can affect narrative, dialogue and gameplay interactions. BioWare’s introduction to The Veilguard

What does the game establish about Taash’s identity?

EA’s official romance guide describes Taash as still figuring out aspects of their identity, but its wording uses she/her pronouns: “Given her age, Taash is still figuring out aspects of her identity.” That sentence does not itself name Taash as non-binary, so it should not be presented as an official confirmation of a specific identity label. PC Gamer’s coverage interprets Taash’s storyline as a gender-identity arc and discusses the game’s non-binary representation. That is the writer’s analysis of the story, rather than an identity label stated in the EA guide. The distinction matters: the official guide and independent criticism are describing the subject from different perspectives. PC Gamer’s analysis of the game’s trans inclusion

Why Taash’s story is part of the game’s companion focus

Companions are central to the game’s design, not just party members. EA says all seven companions can be romance options, with relationships progressing through flirtation, companion quests and gifts before a commitment decision. Those mechanics provide context for how players spend time with companions, but romanceability does not establish a character’s gender identity. EA’s romance guide

In a July 2024 interview with Game Informer, BioWare general manager Gary McKay said companions’ motivations and story arcs became “the centerpiece for this game.” Game director Corinne Busche described them as “the most fully realized complex companions we’ve ever crafted.” Those are the developers’ assessments of their design, rather than independently measured comparisons with earlier games. Is Taash Dragon Age’s first non-binary companion?

That claim remains unverified by the available sources. The official romance guide does not give Taash a non-binary label, while PC Gamer discusses the character’s story as non-binary representation. Neither source establishes a franchise-wide comparison with every earlier Dragon Age character. It is therefore safer to say that Taash’s storyline has been discussed as non-binary representation than to call Taash the series’ first non-binary companion as a settled fact.
