The Verge’s June 11, 2024 preview used “more magic, color, and customizations” to frame Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Official details show what that means in practice: players can shape Rook’s appearance and background, choose Mage as a combat class, and adjust abilities as they play. The game is a single-player RPG from Electronic Arts.
What “more magic, color, and customizations” refers to
The phrase comes from Ash Parrish’s June 11, 2024 preview for The Verge. It is the preview’s editorial framing, not a measured comparison against another game. EA’s feature descriptions give the concrete picture: character creation covers appearance and identity choices, while the class system includes a magic-focused option.
What you can customize when creating Rook
EA’s standalone Character Creator offers appearance options and sliders for four lineages: Human, Qunari, Dwarf, and Elf. Character creation also includes choices beyond looks: players select a combat class, faction, and backstory for Rook.
The creator is a separate digital download. A Rook made in it can be transferred into the full game on the same platform, but the full game must be purchased separately.

How magic and build flexibility work
Mage is one of the three classes EA lists, alongside Warrior and Rogue. Choosing Mage provides a way to play with magic; it is not a requirement for completing the game.
Class choice does not lock every ability decision. In Journal #12, published October 31, 2024, EA says players can swap their own and their companions’ abilities outside combat. Players can also respec individual skill nodes or the full skill tree, allowing adjustments without committing permanently to an early build.
