Its broad romance access and explicit options for a trans or non-binary Rook are significant strengths; a detailed critique by one queer reviewer, however, identifies limits in the dialogue and in how some identity language fits the setting. Those are distinct parts of the picture, not a verdict shared by every queer player.
How does The Veilguard handle queer representation?
The game’s approach operates on three levels: who Rook can love, how players define Rook, and how companions navigate identity. Official EA and BioWare materials establish the advertised options and romance rules. A PC Gamer explainer describes how the identity choices appear in play, while writer Harvey Randall’s review offers a personal assessment of where the writing succeeds and falls short.
Romance is not gated by Rook’s gender
EA’s romance guide describes all seven companions as canonically pansexual. Each can potentially romance Rook and/or another companion regardless of Rook’s race, faction, class or gender. That makes queer romance part of the game’s general relationship system rather than a route that requires choosing one specific identity for the protagonist.
EA also says nudity and gender expression are part of romance by default. Players who do not want nudity can switch it off in the game’s settings; romance scenes and identity options are not the same setting.

Character creation gives identity more than one route
BioWare’s character-creation overview says players select Rook’s gender alongside other character details. It identifies the available classes as Warrior, Mage and Rogue.
In a PC Gamer explainer published October 30, 2024, the choices for pronouns and identity are described as separate. The writer says an early mirror interaction later presents clearly signposted options that establish a trans or non-binary identity. In other words, the game does not reduce those choices to one gender selection. This account describes the mechanics reported by that writer, rather than a claim of independent testing here.

What are the problems with Taash’s storyline?
Taash’s story puts identity and language into the game’s worldbuilding, including a discussion of how different generations and cultures name gender. Randall sees an interesting idea in that tension: identity is not treated as if every person or community must use the same vocabulary.
Randall also criticizes the execution. In their PC Gamer essay on the game’s trans inclusion, they argue that some terminology feels insufficiently integrated into the fantasy setting. They also describe the dialogue wheel as offering too little space for a trans Rook to express a more personal response. The point is not simply that contemporary words do not belong in fantasy; Randall’s criticism is that the surrounding writing and available responses do not always make the material feel fully realized.

That critique sits alongside the game’s explicit identity options rather than canceling them out. Players can have meaningful choices about who Rook is, yet the dialogue may not give that identity the depth or agency a player wants in a particular scene. Randall is describing their own experience and judgment, not reporting a survey or a universal queer-player response.

Creative director John Epler framed the design goal in EA’s launch announcement: “We wanted to give you the choice to really express yourself, and do that in a world full of adventure and danger.” EA listed PS5 among the game’s release platforms in that October 2024 announcement.

- Save a battered world: Explore Thedas, a vibrant realm of rugged wilderness, treacherous labyrinths and glittering cities teetering on the edge as corrupt gods unleash havoc

- International region free version: Region free PS5 disc plays on all systems, imported international packaging may differ in age rating and labeling, DLC may require correct region
The stated aim aligns with the game’s broad romance availability and its separation of gender, pronouns and identity choices. Whether the writing fully supports that freedom is a different question. Randall’s account suggests the gap is most noticeable in the specificity of trans Rook’s dialogue and in how naturally some language sits within the fictional world. That is a useful way to assess the game: distinguish access to representation from the quality and depth of its scenes.

Who may find the representation satisfying?
- Players looking for broad romance access: EA’s rules make every companion potentially available to Rook regardless of the protagonist’s listed background and gender, while allowing companion-to-companion romances.
- Players who want explicit identity choices: The reported mirror options offer a signposted way to establish a trans or non-binary Rook, beyond selecting gender or pronouns alone.
- Players especially attentive to dialogue nuance: Randall’s criticism points to possible frustration when the game recognizes an identity in its setup but gives the protagonist limited room to articulate a personal response.
- Players weighing setting and terminology: Taash’s storyline raises questions about how cultures name gender, though Randall found some of the language insufficiently integrated into the fantasy writing.
