From the Flame Palace, locate the shrine room’s spiral staircase and descend. If you approach by the eastern road, check your quest status first: that route can bring you near the NPC who starts the timed Shadowed Prayers quest.
How to reach the Forbidden Magick Research Lab
There are three broad approaches described for reaching the lab: northern cliff or gaol entrances, an eastern entrance by the Flame Palace, and a southern entrance by the Flame Palace. Once you are in the palace area, look for the Great Flame Shrine room and take its spiral staircase down into the lab. Route details and quest interactions are documented in the Gamer Guides lab walkthrough.

Choose an approach with the quest trigger in mind
The eastern-road approach can take you close to an NPC who starts Shadowed Prayers, a timed quest. If you intend to do that quest, approach prepared to begin it; if you want to postpone it, use another route and check your quest log before heading east. The available guide does not establish that every route or quest state behaves identically for every player.
- Northern cliff or gaol approaches: alternatives to entering from the Flame Palace side.
- Eastern Flame Palace approach: convenient, but carries the reported proximity to the Shadowed Prayers trigger.
- Southern Flame Palace approach: another palace-side option.
Notable rooms and loot
The lab’s floor layout is useful for orienting yourself: the Material Stores is in the upper-right part of B1F, while the Testing Room is in the upper-left. The room placements are also listed in the Gamer Guides location database.

Material Stores: five spellbooks
Near the door in Material Stores, a chest contains five named spellbooks: Igneous Melody, Emergent Vitality, Threshing Blaze, Winter’s Path, and Fulgurous Lord. Check the chest if you are collecting the books; if it is empty, you may have looted it already or your quest progress may affect what remains.
Large pit, Refuse Storage and Testing Room
- Large pit: look in the dragon skeleton’s ribcage for a Wakestone.
- Refuse Storage: search for a Seeker’s Token.
- Testing Room: the guide lists a Blackened Horn here.
Tunnel and Workshop 1
A chest in the tunnel connecting the lab and gaol is listed as containing a Black Crystal. Workshop 1 is also noted for a quest-related item and other loot, but the exact contents can depend on quest progress. If you are following a quest, search the workshop as part of that objective rather than assuming every item is available in every visit.

Quest context and progress
The lab is associated with both main- and side-quest activity. The walkthrough’s broader quest context includes A New Godsway and A Veil of Gossamer Clouds; players may encounter these in different sequences depending on progress. Newt Liqueur is also connected to The Sotted Sage, which is relevant to unlocking the Warfarer vocation. Treat these as progress-dependent connections, not a guarantee that every quest will direct you through the same rooms at the same time.
For general Pawn quest setup, Capcom’s manual says, “To set a pawn quest, simply access a riftstone.” That is a general system instruction, not a lab-specific quest step. See the official Dragon’s Dogma 2 manual.

- Check whether Shadowed Prayers is active or whether you want to trigger it before taking the eastern-road approach.
- Search the Material Stores chest for all five listed spellbooks.
