Choose Dragon Age: The Veilguard if you want action-forward combat, focused regions and a new companion-led story. Choose Dragon Age: Inquisition if you want broader roaming spaces and the option to carry a custom Dragon Age history into the game through Dragon Age Keep. Neither is a universal upgrade: the better fit depends on whether you value pace and combat or exploration and continuity.

At a glance: which game fits you?

If you want… Choose… Why
Fluid, action-forward combat with commands and team combos Dragon Age: The Veilguard You control a two-companion party and can issue commands through an ability wheel.
Wide areas to roam and explore Dragon Age: Inquisition Its larger spaces are a draw if you enjoy open-ended exploration, though the scale and progression gates can affect pacing.
A new companion and faction story Dragon Age: The Veilguard Its companion and faction stories, relationships and choices shape later stages of the game.
A custom historical world state carried into the game Dragon Age: Inquisition Dragon Age Keep lets players build a Dragon Age history and import it at the start of Inquisition.

How combat and party control differ

The Veilguard is more action-forward

The Veilguard offers three player classes—Warrior, Mage and Rogue—and puts fluid moment-to-moment combat at the center. You take two companions into the party and can use an ability wheel to direct allies, choose abilities and set up team combos. BioWare says the wheel can pause combat while you issue follower commands, so the system retains tactical decisions even as the fighting leans more toward action. EA’s overview of Dragon Age: The Veilguard describes its combat and party setup.

Choose by feel, not by assumed tactical depth

If you want combat that feels immediate and lets you intervene with commands, The Veilguard is the clearer match. This distinction does not mean its combat has no tactics: the ability wheel and companion abilities provide ways to direct the party. The comparison here is about emphasis, not a claim that one game is objectively deeper or better.

How exploration and pacing differ

The Veilguard connects focused regions through a hub

The Veilguard uses the Lighthouse as a central hub, with distinct explorable areas reached through the Crossroads. BioWare’s game overview describes that structure, while its player guide encourages exploring areas for side quests and loot. The result is a more directed sequence of regions than a single invitation to roam expansively.

Inquisition suits players who want larger roaming spaces

Inquisition is the better fit if broad areas to explore are part of the appeal. That scale can also feel like a pacing cost. In a September 2026 interview with PC Gamer, former Dragon Age executive producer Mark Darrah said he would cut a large area such as the Hissing Wastes and reduce the Power required to reach critical-path missions by 40 to 60 percent. That figure is Darrah’s design estimate for a hypothetical change, not a measured statistic or a universal verdict on the game.

Which game carries your Dragon Age history forward?

Inquisition has the clearer world-state import

BioWare designed Dragon Age Keep so players could customize a historical world state and import it at the beginning of Inquisition. In the 2013 Keep announcement, executive producer Mark Darrah described the goal as letting players shape a Dragon Age history to their specifications. For returning players who care about carrying a saga forward, that makes Inquisition the better-supported choice.

Veilguard’s Keep distinction matters to returning players

In the same 2026 PC Gamer interview, Darrah said the feature he would add to The Veilguard is “the Keep.” That is a meaningful distinction if importing a custom history is central to what you want. The available comparison does not establish a complete list of which past choices The Veilguard recognizes, so it would be misleading to infer one here.

What to expect from companions and choices

The Veilguard is a strong candidate if you want companion quests and character bonds to be a major part of the experience. EA says player choices affect relationships, and that companion and faction stories can affect the game’s later stages. Its player guide specifically says side content and companion quests have a direct impact on how later stages unfold.

That does not settle which game has better-written companions or greater companion depth. Those are matters of taste, and the evidence here does not establish an objective cross-game ranking. Choose based on the kind of story structure you want: The Veilguard foregrounds a fresh companion and faction story; Inquisition has the clearer route for players who want their historical world state to shape their playthrough.

Does The Veilguard work as a starting point?

The Veilguard is a sensible pick if you want to begin with a newer companion-led story and do not need to import a custom history through Keep. If continuity is the main reason you are choosing, Inquisition is the game with the documented Keep import at its beginning. This comparison does not claim that either choice requires a particular amount of prior series knowledge.
