There was no single definitive “best indie game” of 2025: critics, award juries, and community voters highlighted different strengths. This shortlist pairs notable picks with the kind of player each suits, while distinguishing review scores from awards and community choices.
How to choose among 2025’s indie standouts
“Indie” is not defined consistently across game and award coverage, and no reviewed source provides a complete ranking of every independent release from the year. Treat the games below as a cross-genre guide, not a shared leaderboard. The useful question is what kind of play you want: exploration and puzzles, repeatable action, story-led role-playing, or open-ended experimentation.
Recognition also comes in different forms. A critic’s recommendation is an individual judgment; a Metacritic score aggregates reviews; an award reflects the rules and voters of a particular organization. These signals are not interchangeable.
Notable indie games from 2025
Blue Prince — for puzzles, exploration, and strategy
Blue Prince is a strong fit if you enjoy solving layered puzzles and planning your way through an exploratory adventure. Dogubomb developed it and Raw Fury published it. It released on April 10, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and GeForce Now, according to Metacritic’s game tracker and Into Indie Games.
#1 Best Overall
- Start your own cult in a land of false prophets
- Venture out into diverse and mysterious regions to build a loyal community of woodland Followers
- Repay your debt by building a loyal following
- Spread your Word to become the one true cult!
Metacritic lists a 92 Metascore and tracks the game’s award recognition. That score is a review aggregate, not an award or proof of objective quality. The award record also needs a qualification: after Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 had its Indie Game Awards result retracted, Blue Prince was named Indie Game of the Year in its place. Metacritic’s awards tracker describes that sequence.
Hades II — for repeatable, combat-focused action
Choose Hades II if you want action built around repeatable runs and combat. It appears in Metacritic’s 2025 award tracker and was the community action pick on the Indie Game Awards site. Those are distinct kinds of recognition: a tracker entry for awards coverage and a community-voted category, rather than a claim that one vote settles the year’s best action game. See the Metacritic awards tracker and Indie Game Awards.
Rank #2
Hollow Knight: Silksong — for exploration, platforming, and challenging combat
Hollow Knight: Silksong suits players looking for an action-adventure built around exploration and combat. Nintendo lists September 4, 2025, as its release date and names Team Cherry as developer and publisher. Team Cherry’s official site lists PC, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The Indie Game Awards community page names it both Community Game of the Year and its adventure-game community pick. These are community-voted recognitions, not jury awards. See Nintendo’s listing, Team Cherry, and the Indie Game Awards.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — for turn-based RPG combat with timed defense
This role-playing game is a good match for players who want turn-based battles with active dodge and parry mechanics. TechRadar reviewer Rob Dwiar called it “Channeling true JRPG excellence while putting its own western twist on the genre and turn-based combat, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is an absolutely belting game.” That is Dwiar’s review judgment, not a consensus statement. Metacritic lists the game among 2025 award winners, but records that its Indie Game Awards result was later stripped; do not treat that initial result as a current win. Read Dwiar’s TechRadar review and Metacritic’s award history.

Minds Beneath Us — for a narrative-focused science-fiction experience
If story is your main draw, Minds Beneath Us is a notable narrative pick. Taipei Game Show’s 2025 awards page names the Bearbone-developed game both Grand Prix winner and Best Narrative winner. Those jury awards offer a perspective beyond English-language year-end recommendation lists. The awards page identifies its 2025 winners, but does not by itself establish that every listed game first released in calendar 2025; verify release timing for your platform before treating an award year as a release year. See Taipei Game Show’s winners.
Henry Halfhead — for playful, open-ended experimentation
Henry Halfhead is the lighter sandbox option here: it centers on playful interactions with objects rather than a conventional combat-focused loop. GamesRadar+ identifies Lululu Entertainment as developer and lists PS5, Switch, and PC as platforms. It is worth considering if you want a more whimsical change of pace. See GamesRadar+’s game page.

Balatro — an award-winning card-game pick, with release timing to check
For card-game systems and mobile play, Balatro is a useful award-backed name: Taipei Game Show lists LocalThunk’s game as winner of Best Innovation and Best Mobile Game. However, that awards page does not establish when the game first released. Since this list is about releases in 2025, check the release date for the specific edition or platform you are considering rather than using the award year as evidence of a 2025 debut. See Taipei Game Show’s winners.

Year-end recognition can surface games that suit different tastes, but it cannot turn varied genres into a reliable one-to-one ranking. Metacritic describes its awards page as a running record of 2025 releases recognized by major awards, with updates through April 20, 2026. Its tracker notes the retracted Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 result and replacement of Blue Prince. The Indie Game Awards’ community-voted results are a separate process; for example, its page names Hollow Knight: Silksong Community Game of the Year. Read each label for what it is: an aggregate score, an award-body result, or a community vote.

These awards indicate recognition in specific categories, but the page alone does not prove that every winner first released in 2025.
