If Dragon Ball FighterZ is smooth offline but slows down, snaps backward or drops matches online, first separate connection trouble from PC frame-rate stutter. For normal one-on-one matches, update the game, have both players use the same netcode (preferably rollback), test with Ethernet, then verify Steam files and remove software that hooks into the game. Rollback cannot repair packet loss, unstable Wi-Fi, severe latency or a computer that cannot hold consistent frame timing.
Identify what “lag” actually is
| What you see | Most likely area |
|---|---|
| Training or local versus also stutters | PC performance, drivers or frame pacing |
| Offline is smooth but every online match slows | Connection quality, netcode, firewall or router |
| Characters jump backward or attacks are corrected | Rollback predictions being corrected; frequent large corrections suggest unstable latency or packet loss |
| Only one opponent produces severe slowdown | That player’s connection, route or PC (a technical inference, not proof) |
| Circle Party Match or Party Battle is slow | Those modes remain delay-based |
| Rooms fail to join or matchmaking hangs | Steam, firewall, router or service connectivity |
Run one training session, one local match if possible, and several online matches against different opponents. This prevents an opponent’s bad connection from being mistaken for a fault in your PC.
Use FighterZ rollback correctly
Rollback netcode is available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch remain delay-based. On PC, rollback and delay-based searches use separate matchmaking pools, so both players need compatible selections. Rollback predicts inputs and corrects them when delayed data arrives; it usually feels more responsive than delay-based synchronization, but it still depends on reliable connections and stable local performance. See Bandai Namco’s rollback announcement.
For standard one-on-one play, open the current online/network settings, select Rollback, and have a friend select the same option before creating or joining a room. Menu wording can change between builds, so use the labels shown in your installed version. Circle Party Match and Party Battle are explicitly limited to delay-based netcode, even on platforms that support rollback. FighterZ also does not provide cross-play between PC and consoles.

Apply these fixes in order
1. Update Steam and FighterZ
- Exit and relaunch Steam.
- Let every FighterZ update finish and avoid beta branches, old executables or modified installs while testing.
- Check the official FighterZ game page and version 1.50 notes. Version 1.50 was listed as live on April 21, 2026; a later patch may now be current.
2. Test on Ethernet
Connect the PC directly to the router. Ethernet removes local wireless interference and variability, but it cannot shorten the distance to an opponent or fix that opponent’s connection. If wired networking is impossible, use 5 GHz or 6 GHz near the access point, avoid weak extenders and public, school or corporate Wi-Fi, and pause streaming, cloud backups, torrents and large downloads.
3. Power-cycle the network
- Close FighterZ and Steam.
- Unplug modem and router for about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and wait until it is fully online.
- Reconnect or restart the router, then restart the PC.
General checks such as software updates, correct system time, modem/router settings and firewall permissions are also recommended in SEGA’s network guidance.

4. Verify the Steam installation
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click DRAGON BALL FighterZ (or open its gear menu).
- Select Properties → Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- When it completes, restart Steam and retest.
Steam warns that local configuration files may fail validation normally. Repeated substantive downloads point instead to disk errors, permissions, antivirus quarantine or a damaged installation; do not reinstall Windows as a first response. See Steam’s verification explanation.
5. Remove interfering software
- Close VPNs, download managers, cloud-sync clients and browser streams.
- Disable Discord, Xbox Game Bar, GeForce Experience, AMD and recording overlays temporarily.
- Remove or disable mods and unofficial patches.
- Test without RGB/control utilities that hook into games.
- Prefer allowing Steam and FighterZ through security software rather than permanently disabling protection.
SEGA’s PC performance guidance also recommends reproducing problems without mods, updating drivers and checking Radeon Anti-Lag, Boost and Chill features.

6. Update Windows and drivers
Update Windows, the GPU, motherboard chipset, Ethernet/Wi-Fi adapter and controller firmware. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance covers these updates, file verification and disabling nonessential software at this support page. A new driver is not guaranteed to help; if the issue began immediately after one, test the previous stable release.
7. Check frame pacing, not only average FPS
- Close CPU/GPU-heavy applications and remove overclocks or undervolts while testing.
- Check temperatures and ensure a laptop uses its dedicated GPU.
- Use standard graphics settings and test without overlays.
- Check refresh-rate, V-Sync and synchronization settings for unusual frame-time spikes.
The Steam listing describes FighterZ as a 60 FPS game. Its published minimum is 64-bit Windows 7/8/10, 4 GB RAM, an Intel Core i5-3470 or AMD FX-4350-class CPU and GeForce GTX 650 Ti or Radeon HD 6870-class graphics; recommended specifications list 8 GB RAM, an Intel Core i7-3770 or Ryzen 5 1400-class CPU and GeForce GTX 660 or Radeon HD 7870-class graphics. These are legacy published requirements, not a guarantee of smooth online play on every modern configuration. Check Steam’s listing and technical support page.

8. Check firewall and router restrictions
Allow Steam and FighterZ through Windows Firewall. Strict NAT, double NAT, mesh/extender problems and hotel, office or carrier-grade networks can prevent rooms from connecting. Update router firmware and, where appropriate, test a direct modem/router setup. UPnP or port forwarding may affect reachability, but use them only with current manufacturer or official documentation and understand the security implications; unverified port lists and registry edits are poor troubleshooting.
9. Run a controlled comparison
Keep the same PC, controller, netcode setting and wired connection. Test a nearby friend, then several random opponents, with downloads and overlays closed. Note slow motion versus rollback corrections, mode, approximate rollback indicators, time of day and whether another game is unstable. Changing many settings at once makes the result impossible to interpret.

When the problem is not fixable on your side
One poor match among many stable matches usually implicates the peer’s connection, route or PC rather than proving your setup is defective. A high speed-test number does not rule out jitter, packet loss, bufferbloat or Wi-Fi interference. DNS changes can affect name resolution, but generally do not change real-time in-match packet quality. A VPN can add hops and complicate NAT, so it is a poor first-line fix. Buying a router, cable or new PC is justified only after testing demonstrates a home-network or local-performance fault; no accessory enables rollback in delay-only modes or creates cross-play.
Platform and mode edge cases
- Party modes: Circle Party Match and Party Battle remain delay-based, so rollback settings cannot change their behavior.
- Mods: Remove them before diagnosis; unsupported file changes can cause stutter or failed updates.
- Steam Deck/Linux: The official requirements emphasize Windows, and surfaced Steam guidance describes Steam Deck play as offline-only. Confirm Proton and platform support separately instead of applying Windows assumptions.
- Repeated verification failures: If real game files redownload repeatedly, investigate storage health, permissions and antivirus interference.
When to contact support
After updating, testing offline and online, using a stable connection, verifying files and removing mods/overlays, record your operating system, hardware, netcode mode, affected modes, opponent pattern, timestamps and firewall/router setup. This information lets Steam support or Bandai Namco distinguish a client fault from a peer or network-path problem.
