The films are optional side stories, not required episodes. A practical placement is Dead Zone after Dragon Ball and before Z, followed by the main Saiyan story, with The World’s Strongest and The Tree of Might saved for afterward. That is an approximate story placement, not the films’ original release order.

The simplest Saiyan Saga watch order
- Finish Dragon Ball. This gives context for Goku, his friends, the Dragon Balls and the martial-arts world before the alien threat appears.
- Optionally watch Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone. This is a side-story prequel placement used by several watch-order guides. It is not required to understand the television series.
- Choose one television version: watch Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai, beginning with the Raditz arrival and continuing without inserting films.
- Continue through the complete Nappa and Vegeta conflict. Stop when the Earth battle and its immediate departure aftermath are complete in your edition.
- Optionally watch The World’s Strongest and The Tree of Might. Treat both as early-Z movie extras rather than missing television episodes.
This order keeps the main narrative uninterrupted while still giving you a logical place for every early film. If you prefer historical release order, the films move to different positions, as explained below.
What “Saiyan Saga episodes” means
There is no single episode range that every release, broadcaster and guide labels “the Saiyan Saga.” One Crunchyroll arc guide identifies episodes 1–6 as the Raditz Saga. Other episode lists use “Saiyan Saga” for the larger sequence that includes Raditz, the year of preparation, Nappa’s invasion and the fight with Vegeta. Broadcast edits and repackaging can also change how a viewer sees the numbering.

For that reason, event markers are safer than an unexplained number range:
- Raditz opening: Goku meets a stranger who claims to be his brother; Gohan is kidnapped; Goku and Piccolo form an uneasy alliance.
- Preparation period: the surviving fighters train for the arrival of the Saiyans while Gohan develops under Piccolo’s supervision.
- Invasion: Nappa and Vegeta reach Earth, the Z Fighters gather, and the first battles decide who survives.
- Vegeta confrontation: Goku returns from training, the battle escalates through several transformations and techniques, and the surviving characters deal with the consequences.
If a service or box set displays exact numbers, identify the edition and its labeling convention before quoting a range. The safest instruction is to begin at the first Raditz episode and play continuously until the Vegeta storyline has concluded.
Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai?
Kai is an alternate edited presentation of the same opening story, not a sequel to Z. Toei’s catalog describes the shared premise: Goku encounters a man who says he is Goku’s brother, learns that Goku came from another planet and sees Gohan taken away. That is the starting point for the Raditz material in either version.

Switching from one version to the other halfway through is possible, but it can make episode numbers, scene order and pacing difficult to follow. For a first watch, choose the edition available in your preferred language and picture format, then stay with it until the saga ends.

Where the early movies fit
The following table uses approximate story placement, not release order. The official Toei Animation USA catalog supplies the listed release months and runtimes. English-language marketing uses alternate names for some of the catalog titles.

These movies were produced as separate theatrical stories. They do not form required chapters between the television episodes, so pausing the series to force a film into a particular episode gap can create continuity problems.
Dead Zone
Dead Zone is the only early film commonly positioned before the television series in a chronological-style watch order. It works as an optional bridge because it uses the pre-Saiyan-era cast and places Gohan in danger before the Raditz revelation. The placement is approximate: its original release came after Z had already begun, and the movie is not needed to understand episode 1.

Toei lists this as the second Z film, released in March 1990. Watch it as a self-contained early-Z adventure after finishing the Saiyan conflict. Its release identity is clear even though it is not a required television installment.

The Tree of Might
Toei lists this as the third Z film, released in July 1990. A version of the film was adapted for an English-language broadcast as episodes 46–48. Those numbers belong to that edited broadcast presentation; they should not be treated as the standard episode position of the standalone movie. If your service lists a movie, watch the movie as one feature rather than searching for episodes 46–48.
Chronological-style order versus release order
Two different answers can both be internally consistent because they organize the same material by different rules.
Approximate story placement
- Finish Dragon Ball.
- Watch Dead Zone if you want an early prequel-flavored extra.
- Watch the Saiyan Saga in either Z or Kai, without movie interruptions.
- Watch The World’s Strongest.
- Watch The Tree of Might.
This is the most convenient order for a newcomer who wants the television plot to remain central.
Original release order
Release order places Dead Zone after the opening Z episodes rather than before episode 1. The second and third films then follow their 1990 theatrical releases. Choose this method if you are studying how the franchise was originally presented or want to preserve the contemporary marketing sequence. It is not a claim that every movie event fits perfectly between the episodes released around it.

Three practical plans
First-time viewer
- Complete Dragon Ball, or begin with a recap if you deliberately want to skip it.
- Choose Z or Kai.
- Watch the Raditz opening, training period and Saiyan invasion in one uninterrupted run.
- After the Vegeta conflict, add the two later early-Z movies if you want bonus adventures.
This plan prevents a film’s self-contained plot from interrupting the emotional build toward the invasion.
Completionist rewatch
Use the approximate order above, then revisit the films in release order. Keeping a note of which version you are watching avoids confusing the standalone Tree of Might feature with its three-part broadcast adaptation.
Shortest main-story route
Skip all movies, select Kai or Z, and watch from the first Raditz episode through the end of the Vegeta storyline. Nothing in the three early films is required to follow that television narrative.

Because labels differ, use the plot rather than a universal final episode number. You are at the end when the invasion has been resolved, the surviving heroes have dealt with the battlefield’s immediate consequences and Vegeta has left the Earth storyline. The next major arc changes the setting and objective, so a guide that divides arcs by story events may place the boundary differently from a guide using production or broadcast labels.

Common watch-order mistakes
- Mixing editions: Z and Kai tell the same opening story in different presentations. Pick one instead of counting both as separate seasons.
- Using a broad episode range without a version: episode numbers can shift with edits, regional broadcasts and home-video packaging.
- Inserting every film at a presumed midpoint: the movies are side stories and do not provide required connective scenes.
- Treating broadcast film episodes as standard numbering: the 46–48 adaptation reference applies to an English-language version of The Tree of Might, not to every release.
- Assuming “non-canon” is an official catalog label: a consulted watch-order guide describes the pre-2013 films as largely non-canon extras, but that is the guide’s framing, not a blanket Toei canon declaration.
Availability and format considerations
Streaming rights change by country and date, so a listing visible to one reader may not appear for another. Check the licensed services and digital stores available in your territory, and confirm whether a listing is the original series, Kai, or a movie before starting. Home-video editions can also use different episode numbering and subtitle or dub tracks.
If you choose the optional film route, a home-video listing for Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone may be useful, but edition, price and availability vary. Verify those details at the time of purchase rather than relying on an undated catalog reference.
Bottom line for a spoiler-safe marathon
Finish Dragon Ball, optionally watch Dead Zone, then watch either Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai continuously through Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta. Add The World’s Strongest and The Tree of Might afterward as optional early-Z movies. When an episode guide gives a different number range, follow its named edition and its event descriptions rather than assuming one universal Saiyan Saga numbering system.
