To reach the Gohan Black story scenario in Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, play Gohan’s Episode Battle through Chapter 5 and complete the alternate objective in “Defend Earth from the Frieza Force”: defeat the Frieza Force Soldier, then corner Frieza. This opens The Strongest Warrior route. Gohan Black is an opponent in that route—not an official playable-character or costume unlock, according to the cited guides.
How to open the Gohan Black route
- Start Gohan’s Episode Battle. Progress through the episodes until you reach Chapter 5.
- Play “Defend Earth from the Frieza Force.” Complete its alternate objective: “Defeat the Frieza Force Soldier, then corner Frieza.” Kotaku’s walkthrough says dealing damage quickly is a practical way to meet the objective; that is guide advice, not an official developer instruction. - Continue on The Strongest Warrior path. The alternate objective opens this route, which proceeds through additional Frieza fights before reaching the altered Future Trunks storyline and the Gohan Black encounters.
- Finish the route’s missions to complete the scenario. Kotaku reports that the route includes a transformed Gohan Black and Fused Zamasu, and awards The Strongest Warrior achievement for completing every mission. Kotaku’s route guide
If the alternate objective is difficult
Kotaku advises lowering the opponent’s health quickly to satisfy the objective. The same guide warns that lowering the game’s difficulty prevents alternate objectives from being completed, and suggests using a Dragon Orb if more time is needed. These are walkthrough recommendations rather than official instructions; follow the objective shown in the mission and avoid reducing difficulty if you are trying to trigger the branch.
What you unlock—and what you do not
The route unlocks a different story scenario in Gohan’s Episode Battle. It does not officially add Gohan Black to the playable roster or unlock a costume. Both Destructoid’s guide and Kotaku’s guide distinguish the story encounter from a character unlock. Kotaku discusses PC mods and Custom Battle workarounds, but those are unofficial alternatives, not part of the standard unlock route, and may depend on platform and availability.
Where Episode Battle fits
Episode Battle follows eight characters’ perspectives, and choices or secondary objectives can lead to alternate scenarios. Bandai Namco Europe’s Game Modes Handbook introduces that branching structure with the line, “Your choices matter!” Its story map lets players track progress and revisit choices. Custom Battle is a separate mode for building or playing custom scenarios and Bonus Battles; it is not the mode used to open Gohan’s route.
