What is Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake?
Released on November 14, 2024, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is Square Enix’s remake of the role-playing game that begins the Erdrick Trilogy’s story. The adventure follows Ortega’s child, called to action on their sixteenth birthday to continue Ortega’s quest and defeat the Archfiend Baramos. Square Enix describes the game as the narrative beginning of the trilogy, even though it is the third numbered entry.
The remake’s balance is straightforward: it updates the presentation and adds selected conveniences while retaining the familiar turn-based adventure at its core. That makes it relevant both to players revisiting a classic and to newcomers curious about the series’ roots.
What does HD-2D mean in this remake?
Square Enix uses “HD-2D” to describe a visual approach that combines retro pixel art with modern 3D graphics. In Dragon Quest III, the pixel-art characters and world sit within 3D environments and effects. The contrast keeps the game’s old-school identity visible while giving its presentation a more dimensional, contemporary look.

The publisher’s official store description calls the visuals “Stunning HD-2D visuals” and says they fuse pixel art with 3D graphics. That is Square Enix’s promotional characterization; “gorgeous” is an editorial judgment, not a measurable technical specification.
What has changed from the original?
The documented updates focus on presentation and ease of play rather than replacing the underlying battle format. Square Enix identifies an improved, modernized user interface and quality-of-life changes, including adjustable battle speed and auto-battle.

The combat remains turn-based: players issue commands, and the battle proceeds in turns. The conveniences let players tailor the pace and level of input without turning the remake into an action RPG. Where can you play it, and is there a physical edition?
Square Enix’s November 2024 release announcement lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Windows and Steam. Its regional product page lists standard editions for Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Microsoft Store on Windows; that page specifies physical versions only for Switch and PS5.
