Was the Steam record set before the game came out?
The headline’s “before it’s even out” framing is not established by the available date information alone. Steam’s store page lists October 10, 2024 as the release date, while Bandai Namco’s launch announcement, dated October 11 in Japan, says the Steam version released October 11. SteamDB dates the peak October 11 but does not provide an exact hour in the cited information. Those dates leave the peak’s precise timing relative to the applicable release time unresolved; they do not prove it happened before public release.
The difference is a reminder that a calendar date can vary by time zone, and release access can also depend on an edition’s early-access terms. Without an exact peak time and a matching regional release time, the most accurate claim is that Sparking! ZERO reached its Steam peak on its release-date window.

How does the player peak compare with sales?
Concurrent players and copies sold measure different things. Bandai Namco announced on October 15, 2024 that the game had sold more than three million units worldwide in its first 24 hours. The publisher later reported more than five million copies worldwide as of December 31, 2024; that total includes downloadable versions and Steam downloads.

Why did Sparking! ZERO draw such a large launch audience?
The game revived the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi series after 17 years, and Bandai Namco highlighted its roster of 182 characters in its launch announcement. The publisher also attributed part of the result to overseas marketing activity. Its 2025 integrated report says early gameplay footage received a greater-than-expected response and that fan sharing helped boost initial sales. These are Bandai Namco’s explanations, rather than independent findings establishing what caused the player peak.

In the same report, Jun Furutani, an assistant manager at Bandai Namco Entertainment, described the series’ appeal as character immersion: players enjoy battles as their favorite characters in the world of Dragon Ball, rather than competing primarily to win or lose. That positioning helps explain why the game’s broad roster and spectacle mattered to its launch messaging.

Bandai Namco lists DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam, and describes it as a 3D arena fighting game. Steam identifies Spike Chunsoft as developer and Bandai Namco Entertainment as publisher. The 122,554 peak is specific to Steam. The available figures do not establish a combined simultaneous-player count across Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
