That makes it an inviting return for Budokai Tenkaichi fans, though it is better framed as a spectacle-driven arena fighter than as a bid for the deepest fighting-game systems. The available independent review is MeriStation’s assessment of the PS5 version at launch, not a platform-wide or current performance evaluation.
What kind of Dragon Ball game is Sparking! ZERO?
Bandai Namco presented DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO as a new entry in the Budokai Tenkaichi series after a 15-year gap. Its focus is high-speed 3D arena combat: rush attacks, rapid movement, beam clashes and large-scale ultimate attacks designed around the series’ recognizable battles. The publisher’s description calls for “heart-pounding, high-speed 3D battles that stay true to the anime and video game series” — promotional wording, rather than an independent assessment. Bandai Namco’s game overview outlines that pitch.
The appeal is the scale and immediacy of the fantasy: the game aims to make fighters, signature moves and dramatic clashes the center of play. Its broad character selection is a feature claim, not evidence that every fighter is equally distinct or competitively balanced.
How much content is there?
Episode Battle
Episode Battle is the story-driven mode, with single-player battles told from the perspectives of eight major characters: Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Jiren, Future Trunks, Goku Black and Frieza. It gives fans a way to revisit major confrontations through character-focused play rather than limiting the game to versus matches. Custom Battle
Custom Battle lets players assemble fighters, dialogue and effects into original scenarios. That offers a different kind of replay value: instead of only replaying official story encounters, players can create their own match setups. The Dragon Ball Official Site’s launch notice also describes the mode as a way to create a battle of your own.
Launch roster and later activity
Bandai Namco’s overview lists 182 characters across the Dragon Ball universe for the launch roster. Treat that as the publisher’s launch-era figure, not a current total that accounts for later downloadable content. The publisher’s official game site displays a September 4, 2026 update notice and a July 30, 2026 Super Limit-Breaking NEO DLC notice. Those notices establish continued post-launch activity, but do not by themselves establish the contents or effects of either release: Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe’s official game site.

Is Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO worth it?
For fans seeking a large cast, fast arena battles and the sensation of staging dramatic Dragon Ball showdowns, the game’s premise is a strong fit. Its story and custom modes also give players options beyond straight one-on-one matches. The trade-off is that spectacle and breadth are not the same as mechanical depth. MeriStation’s October 7, 2024 review of the PS5 version called the game visually impressive and entertaining, while judging it less deep than some fighting games. That distinction matters most if you are choosing between this and a fighting game primarily for competitive systems. The available evidence supports describing Sparking! ZERO as a franchise spectacle with broad character and scenario options; it does not establish a rigorous head-to-head ranking against other fighters or earlier Budokai Tenkaichi entries.

Platforms, release date and sales milestone
DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO launched worldwide on October 11, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, according to the Dragon Ball Official Site. Bandai Namco Holdings’ 2025 integrated report states that the game sold over three million units in its first 24 hours after release, a record for the Dragon Ball game series at the time: Bandai Namco Holdings Integrated Report 2025.
