Bob Vila named it best overall after testing ten shovels in its guide updated March 4, 2025, and Popular Mechanics also selected it for that category in September 2024. But there is no single best shovel for every job: a spade is better suited to transplanting, a square-point shovel to scooping, and a trench shovel to digging narrow channels.
This is a U.S.-oriented, task-based ranking, not a claim that these tools have been independently tested side by side here. Match the blade and handle to the work you actually do.
What is the best shovel for digging?
For general digging, start with a round-point shovel. Its pointed blade is shaped to cut into soil, and its upper edge lets you apply downward pressure with a foot. Among the models in this ranking, the Bully Tools 12-Gauge Round Point Shovel is the best-supported all-around choice: Bob Vila named it best overall in a guide updated March 4, 2025, and Popular Mechanics did the same in its September 23, 2024 roundup.
That recommendation comes with a trade-off. Bob Vila described the shovel as heavy and premium-priced; its test guide reported a weight of 5.6 lb and rated ease of use 4/5, comfort 4/5, performance 4.3/5, and value 4.7/5. Those are Bob Vila’s reported test results, not measurements made for this article. Its guide also cautioned against using excessive prying force against rocks or thick roots.

The manufacturer offers a 46-inch D-grip version weighing 5 lb and a 60-inch long-handle version weighing 5.5 lb. These are manufacturer specifications; Bob Vila’s separately reported test weight was 5.6 lb.
The manufacturer describes it for tough soil, rocks, roots, trenching, planting, and ground preparation, and lists a limited lifetime warranty covering defects in material and workmanship. These are product and warranty claims from Bully Tools, not independent durability findings. The product page displayed $59.99 when accessed on October 8, 2026; online prices and stock can change.

Choose the 12-gauge model if you want the reinforced, heavier-duty option and do not mind the weight. For repeated digging over several hours, the weight Bob Vila noted is a practical consideration, especially if you prefer a lighter tool.
Which shovel is best for hard or rocky soil?
A round-point shovel is the most relevant shape in this ranking for cutting into soil, and Bully Tools describes its 12-gauge model as intended for tough soil, rocks, and roots. Bob Vila’s guide also warns that excessive prying against rocks or thick roots can be a problem. The available evidence does not establish a universally best shovel for every kind of hard or rocky ground, so treat the 12-gauge pick as a general-purpose candidate rather than a guarantee that it will handle any obstruction.

When to choose a different shovel
For scooping: a square-point shovel
A square-point blade is the better match when the task is moving or scooping loose material rather than piercing into undisturbed ground. Popular Mechanics selected the Truper Tru-Pro 48-Inch Square Point Shovel for scooping. Its roundup does not establish current price, stock, or a full specification set for the model.
For transplanting: a spade
A spade is the task-specific choice when you need to work around plants. Popular Mechanics named the Fiskars Steel Garden Spade Shovel best for transplanting. Fiskars’ 2026 gardening catalogue distinguishes spade and shovel models by task, but it is not a specific verification of the exact U.S. model named in the roundup.

For narrow trenches: a trench shovel
For digging trenches, Popular Mechanics selected Bully Tools’ 14-Gauge Trench Shovel. A trench tool is a more task-focused option than using a general-purpose round-point shovel for every cut. Current model specifications and retail availability are not established here.
Is the Bully Tools 14-Gauge round-point shovel a lighter alternative?
It may be, depending on configuration, but “14-gauge” does not mean a thicker head than “12-gauge.” Bully Tools says its 12-gauge head is thicker. The manufacturer lists the 14-gauge round-point shovel at 4.5–5.5 lb across versions, with fiberglass or hardwood handles, D-grip or long-handle options, and open- or closed-back variants. Listed lengths include 46- and 60-inch versions, while some product dimensions show 58 inches. Check the exact configuration before comparing weight or length.
Bully Tools lists a limited lifetime warranty for defects in material and workmanship for this model as well. Its “up to 30% more durable” comparison is manufacturer marketing, not an independent test result. The product page also reports that The Spruce featured the model as “Best Shovel” in a 2024 gardening-tools article; that award reference is reported by the manufacturer.
How to choose the right shovel for your yard
- Start with the material and motion. Choose a round point to cut into soil, a square point to scoop, a spade for transplanting, or a trench shovel for trenching.
- Compare the whole tool, not only the blade gauge. Handle material, grip style, length, weight, back design, and the head-to-handle joint affect whether a shovel suits your work.
- Factor in time and comfort. A heavier shovel may be acceptable for occasional jobs but tiring during prolonged digging. Bob Vila’s ratings cover ease, comfort, performance, and value for its selected overall pick; they are not ratings for every shovel in the table.
- Confirm the exact configuration before buying. Bully’s 12- and 14-gauge round-point models have multiple handle and grip versions, and the listed weights differ by configuration. Retail price and stock are changeable.
Sources and scope
The ranking draws on Bob Vila’s guide updated March 4, 2025, Popular Mechanics’ roundup dated September 23, 2024, and Bully Tools’ manufacturer product pages accessed October 8, 2026. It is U.S.-oriented. The named selections are editorial recommendations from those publications; this article does not claim first-hand testing, market-wide durability data, or current retail availability for every alternative.
