Dragon Is Dead is a single-player 2D action roguelite built around demanding combat and lasting build progression. Its strongest case is the combination of responsive, pattern-focused fighting, pixel-art presentation, and equipment that carries between attempts. The caveat is that published reviews also point to slower progression, repetitive stages, and a less compelling story. Whether it is worth playing depends on how much you value combat and loot over variety in levels and narrative.
What is Dragon Is Dead?
Developed by TeamSuneat and published by PM Studios, Dragon Is Dead is a dark-fantasy action roguelite and 2D platform fighter. The full PC release arrived on Steam on 6 June 2025, following Early Access from 7 June 2024. Official listings also cover PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Steam’s listing describes it as a single-player game.
How do the runs and combat work?
Each attempt sends you through changing, multi-layered stages with different enemy arrangements, loot, and opportunities to shape a build. Combat emphasizes dodging accurately and reading enemy attack patterns rather than simply attacking without pause. The game’s official descriptions and published reviews characterize the fighting as combo-driven and responsive; this is not a hands-on control or difficulty assessment.
Failure has a split cost: death takes your gold and temporary buffs, but equipment and runes persist into the next attempt. That persistent gear gives a run a longer tail than a purely reset-based roguelite, while the lost resources still make survival matter. It softens failure without eliminating it.

- Play as an immortal Successor - You are a Successor, an immortal warrior empowered by the gods Lu, Ashuran, and Harnia. When you die, you revive with your gear, runes, and unlocks intact and head back out from Cliffshire to push further into corrupted zones. Choose your Successor - You'll start as the Spellblade and unlock additional Successors as you progress. Each has its own skill tree, weapons, and playstyle
- Playable Classes - Spellblade-Element-focused hybrid with close and mid-range attacks built around fire, frost, and lightning. Berserker - Heavy melee bruiser that trades its own HP and positioning for huge damage and armor. Hunter - Mobile ranged fighter using thrown weapons, poison, and beast abilities to apply damage over time and control space.
- 2D Roguelite Hack-and-Slash Combat - Combat revolves around precise dodges, reading telegraphed attacks, and committing to aggressive combos. Areas are multi-layered 2D stages that reshuffle enemy layouts, hazards, and loot each run. When you fall, you lose gold and temporary bonuses, but your gear and runes stay with you and form the base of your next attempt.
- Loot, Runes, and Artifacts - Hunt Elites and Bosses to claim Rune Stones, then craft them into Legendary and Mythic equipment. Runes and class skill trees interact to define your build, while artifacts you pick up mid-run stack into powerful synergies.
- Bonus Goodie - Poster is packed inside.
Do loot and builds offer enough variety?
The documented build systems go beyond picking up stronger equipment. Bosses provide rune stones that can be used to craft or awaken legendary gear, while exploration artifacts can combine blessings and curses. Together with persistent equipment and runes, those systems give players several levers for changing a character’s setup between attempts.
Critics have praised customization and loot, but the available evidence does not establish how many viable builds there are or how distinct they feel over a long playthrough. One IGN preview reproduced on Steam praised the progression systems and said each run felt unique; that is a preview comment, not a full-review finding or a guarantee that every player will experience the same variety.

- 2D Action Platforming: Fast-paced combat focused on dodging, timing and pattern recognition. Precision is key to defeat enemies and bosses.
- Rogue-lite Exploration: Levels regenerate with new layouts, enemies and loot after each death. Every run offers a fresh challenge.
- Permanent Progression: Keep runes and gear after death to grow stronger. Progress carries over between runs.
- Artifact System: Find artifacts that grant buffs or curses. Mix and match for powerful but risky effects.
Where does Dragon Is Dead fall short?
The mixed critical response points to a gap between the combat loop and the surrounding structure. In the surfaced June 2025 reviews, some critics praised the art, combat, and customization, while others raised concerns about slow progression, repetitive or arena-like maps, weaker storytelling, or a less distinctive roguelite hook. Those are attributed criticisms, not universal verdicts.
A limited set of indexed critic examples includes scores from 68 to 75. That range should not be read as a complete review aggregate or a current Metascore. Steam’s indexed snapshot showed 75% positive from 661 user reviews, while the US PlayStation Store showed 3.12 out of 5 from 94 ratings on 8 October 2026. User ratings are platform-specific and volatile, so they are context rather than a substitute for a complete review consensus.

What has been added after launch?
The developer’s 16 December 2025 update describes The Rift, an end-game mode built around short, wave-based runs. It adds exclusive gems and a way to infuse gear options. The update also describes a leaderboard rollout as a pre-season intended for balance and stability after clearing Adventure Difficulty. That status is time-sensitive: the update documents the pre-season plan, not whether a full competitive season is currently live.

Dragon Is Dead is most appealing if you want a challenging action loop where careful dodging and enemy-pattern reading meet persistent gear, rune crafting, and build changes. Its case is less convincing if you need consistently varied stages or a strong story to carry the hours between combat encounters. The Rift adds documented end-game activity, though its leaderboard status should not be assumed to be a completed live season based on the December 2025 update alone.
